My husband’s aunt sent him outside to get a chicken to ring it’s neck for dinner. He tried but could not do it. She went outside calling him a city boy picked up the chicken rung it’s neck cleaned it and cooked it for Sunday dinner still talking about how Jerry could not ring that chickens neck but said “ look at him!”” he sure can eat it! “

That’s a cruel way to kill a chicken. You’re slit the neck and hang chicken up do so the blood can drain . You’re also supposed to say a prayer before slathering and animals. Only hillbilly are cruelty to animals.

You know, for a bird that can’t fly and has to walk everywhere it goes, I’m surprised the thigh is the fattiest part of a chicken.

when i was a kid, id see my grandmother grab up 2 chickens, 1 in each hand, and ring their necks. then, she would scald and defeather em, cut em up, and fry em. she cooked on a woodfired cookstove. them was the days. ive had people tell me "we ate lots of chicken when i was young, so now, i dont like it". i think they probably didnt like chicken to begin with. ok. we did too, cause it was cheap, and we were by no means wealthy. at the store, lots of times mom would get wings for free, cause nobody wanted em, or thought they were "cool" like they do now, eatin hot wings. backs and necks too. mom would get them for free, boil em, and make chicken soup after she strained out the bones. even as much chicken as i ate when i was young, i could STILL eat fried chicken every day.

Hi Tammy and Chris... I had to laugh when you spoke of girls \ women not wanting to cut up a chicken but buy it prepared...That sounds exactly like my 2 daughters. I told them many times over the years about dividing up meat to save money but they still don't want to...I buy 3 lbs. of ground beef and separate it into 2 one pound containers and the other pound into patties then freeze it. How hard is that? But they don't want to handle the meat...ha ha ha That chicken looks delicious. God Bless You both... LuvYa! Bye from Ohio

Grandma’s Sunday dinner: fried chicken, mashed potatoes and milk gravy, Lima beans, corn, potato salad, white bread to put more gravy on, sliced tomatoes, deviled eggs, and plenty of iced tea!!! I too remember my grandma telling me to go out back and ring a chickens neck like I saw her do about every week. I tried didn't kill it well.i believe that was the first but lastm time I have ever panicked in my 88 years . By the way I separate the thigh from the drumstick when I cut up..I love your show and I relate to what you do in the kitchen.

I've never seen anyone make chicken like my Grandma did, until now. Tall cast iron skillet. Lard or shortening. She always cut up a chicken. She insisted that pre cut chicken had bad parts they took off. She fried hers a long time turning it often. BUT she always had wishbones. It was sacrilege not to have a wishbone! 🤣 My personal favorite piece.
This is the best chicken ever. She would occasionally make her biscuits with lard and you could tell the difference. Her white chicken gravy was the best.
Once again. Chris has the best taste!!!!

That's how my mom and both mamaws fried chicken!! And now I fry it that way too! And that chicken gravy is so good over some buttermilk biscuits!! About once a summer while our son was little I'd get up early and fry a batch if chicken, fix green beans, and make tater salad (made the tater salad the night before), and we'd load up our insulated cooler with that and head to Gatlinburg and Cherokee for a picnic!!!!!! I'd make enough food so we could eat a picnic lunch and supper down there!!! Those were such fun times. And we'd all about starve to death driving down there smelling that good fried chicken!🍗🥰

It's been a long time since I made chicken like that. My mother made chicken like that. We had our own "yard birds", so it was always fresh. Her brother brought his family often for Sunday dinner and we ALWAYS had that chicken because it was his favorite. Thank you, Chris and Tammy for reminding me to "send us back in time". Love ya!

I grew up with chicken my Granny had freshly killed and cleaned as well. The only change is that she soaked it in buttermilk before church on Sunday morning which made the chicken tenderized by he time we got home. She didn’t use egg either, the buttermilk took the place of it. She used self rising flour as well. The rest of her recipe was identical, cover for most of the cooking and then uncover and turn up the heat slightly at the end to crisp it up. I make this for my husband as often as possible, it is his favorite meal.

My Mom used to make french fries in her cast iron skillet, and she cooked with Crisco. She would put the used Crisco back in a dedicated container and put it in the fridge. She reused it multiple times. You probably can't do that with something containing flour debris. Reusing it was more economical.

My Grandma, Katie McDaniel from Oklahoma, made buttermilk biscuits for every meal, flour gravy, she cooked her chicken in Crisco too and used a paper bag to flour the pieces up, she mashed her potatoes, and there was a green garden salad, (all from her garden) for lunch and dinner, then desert was usually peach cobbler or some kind of cake :) She passed in 1999 and I honor her with my cookin every meal. I cook just like her 💖 Thank you Tammy and Chris, you two give me such a warm feeling, because I was raised similar to y'all.

Oh my this looks scrumptious, I don’t mind cutting up a chicken into pieces BUT if I had to kill it myself I reckon I’d darn well starve to death as I’m sure I couldn’t do it. I can’t get Crisco shortening here in Australia but I found that the blocks of super-fry are a great substitute & possibly similar to yours. Thank you Tammy & Chris for this ‘winner winner chicken dinner’ & that’s a rather nifty turning hook too.

That is the prettiest chicken! My Grandfather and his siblings snuck and fried a chicken when their parents went to town. I imagine this is how they fried ,because I'm sure their mother wouldn't miss a little bit of lard but definitely a cup or two if deep frying. They feasted, disposed of all the evidence and acted as if nothing happened. Later on in the evening, my Grandfather told on everybody!

When I was 19, we went to Arkansas to visit my Grandma Long. I was proud that I was learning to cook. I wanted to surprise Grandma that I had learned how to fry chicken. I wanted to show her i could make fried chicken. She gave me a full half hour, came into the kitchen. Asked me who taught me to make fried chicken. She basically pushed me aside and said she would make dinner . I didn't have. The heart to tell her that her daughter was the one who taught me to cook.😂😂😂😂😂

Try pouring a little potato water into the flour for the gravy. Most pour it down the drain losing a lot of the minerals. Goodness!! Even discarding the peelings is sinful. A lot of vitamins are wasted. Scrub potatoes clean, though if you decide to use the whole potato. I am trying your chicken very soon! I can't wait! You make it look so easy, Tammy!

Tammy. My Mama taught us to clean a chicken and cut it up before we cooked it. When trained as a young person to do this, it becomes second nature,. Chicken tastes so much better when one buys a "whole" chicken as opposed to a "Cut-up" one.

I want to be your neighbor! I can't get the heat correct with glass-top electric stove top. And I can't get my propane single -burner to get to and stay at the proper temp. I want a gas stove, just like Mama had.

My mother law hated taking feathers off a chicken! Lots
Young girls today are horrified to touch raw meat especially with bones. 😂

Looks like my mom's fried chicken which she used Crisco initially when it started to brown she would place a stick of butter on top cover with a lid and she used her Guardian Service cookware.

Just how Mamaw used to make! Lard was king . Crisco too expensive and less flavour.

Love fried chicken and your sides
Granny didn't use a thermometer nor did my mom they knew how many minutes to cook fried chicken
My mom would fry chicken she always told me get it down on both sides then you could place the lid on your chicken
I never use a thermometer when frying chicken and it always comes out perfect never raw
