Day 311: Adultery and Divorce - The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

  • This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress.com/CIY)
The Catechism goes into detail about offenses against the dignity of marriage. The two topics we look at are adultery and divorce. These sins against marriage are not isolated between the spouses, but affect others including family, children, and society. With this, Fr. Mike reminds us that we live in a broken world, but God is among us, and he is a merciful Father with the ability to redeem. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2380-2386.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. I had 2 marriages & 2 divorces before I became Catholic. The 2nd was the worst as I was discerning the Church & my husband was Catholic. He left me when I became disabled & unable to work; he found a girlfriend before he left. At first the RCIA director thought I needed to get an annulment before I entered the Church, but I didn’t. If I ever decide to marry I will, but I don’t plan on marrying again. My life is devoted to prayers, my church, & my grandchildren. God has been so good to me.🙏❤️

I am a Catholic and have been through similar to you. My first was the worst. I found help from the wrong person. I had tried the church and solicitors but no one could offer me any help at all. This was in 1980s. My first marriage was annulled. Fr Mike doesn't mention annulment. The second was more mental anguish. I've been on my own for 10 years. I'm not marrying again. I like to think I'm married to Jesus. I have grandchildren too. God bless you. I love to pray too. ❤🙏

If you are divorced, in opposition to scripture., reconcile with your mate. If it is not possible, then accept God’s grace and move forward. Seek to live a life pleasing to God from this point on.
God is a merciful God. Can God forgive anger, gossip, malice. He is a merciful God. He’s the God who had mercy on the adulterous woman. He’s a God who not only forgave but commissioned the Samaritan woman who had been in and out of five different broken homes. Is He a God of mercy? Yes!❤❤❤

God has a heart for hurting parents. Should we be surprised? After all, God himself is a father. What parental emotion has He not felt? Do you find yourself wanting to spare your child from all the hurt in the world? God did. And yet, He “did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). “All things” must include courage and hope.❤❤❤

I am beginning to sense that my profound conversion testimony 16 years ago in Medjugorje, where God intervened through our Blessed Mother to save my marriage, came to light. God has called me out of darkness to become a witness to the sacredness of marriage and the sanctity of life. Being a prodigal son leading a life of promiscuity before my conversion, I thought God made a mistake selecting me for that mission where there are so many holy couples in the world so why me. The more I read about the saints, the more I understand that God could make good out of evil. The life of St. Augustine resonates with me with his prayer, "Give me chastity, but not yet." I have grown closer to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and yearn to be with Him daily to receive the graces to sustain my conversion. I have an immense love for our Blessed Mother. We celebrated our 25th marriage anniversary almost three years ago when we offered a bouquet of roses to our Blessed Mother, I was filled with emotion. Viva Cristo Rey and Ave Maria.

Thank you Fr. Mike. You give us all hope and encouragement! My wife moved out this summer and filed for divorce. I am devastated. We have three sons all pre teen. I am looking at this as a wake up call from God. I was not a great husband or father. I was working too much and only concerned with myself. I am absolutely focused on changing my ways. I am going to be the best father and hopefully husband that I can be. I have recently started RCIA and have such a hunger to learn more about the teaching of the Catholic faith. This is something that i should have done years ago when my wife and I took the sacrament of marriage. We need Christ at the center of our marriage and at the center of our family. My sons all look up to me and want to be just like Dad. I owe it to myself and them and my wife to live a life committed to God and the church. I feel sort of like Saint Paul... I was blind but now I see. Please pray for us. I want nothing more than reconciliation with my wife. 🙏❤

My parents are divorced and had an annulment. Yes, I'm okay, and, yes, I bounced back. But divorce is not okay. And, while I understand the churches desire to keep the sanctity of marriage by offering the annulment process. You cannot annul the life of a child. I am married, and I have three boys. My wife and I have struggles, but my children deserve two parents who love each other. My wife and I argue, and I struggle with things that, I think, all men struggle with. But my wife deserves a faithful husband, and my children deserve loving parents. And I will fall short of a perfect marriage or being a perfect father. But I will never stop striving towards the example of Christ and the Saints. If you want to help your children have a successful marriage, tell them to wait. Wait to have relations with their future spouse. But, also, wait to get married. If their future spouse is the person they are with, he/she will wait. Be certain before you propose or say yes.

Miraculous Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you. who are in all instances of my life with me.
I, in this short dialogue, I want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you, no matter how great the material desires may be.
I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. To that end and submitting to God’s holy will, I ask from you..
(Mention your request here…for the intentions of the brokenhearted and all of my brothers and sisters in need of prayer, worldwide, especially those in need of purgatorial prayer through Christ our Lord)
      Say 1: Our Father… Say 1: Hail Mary… Say 1: Glory Be…
I believe in Thee, O my God. Strengthen, O Lord, my faith. I hope in Thee, O my God. Affirm, O Lord, my hope. I love Thee, O my God; increase, O Lord, my love. I repent of having offended Thee. O my God, help me to have contrition, so that with the help of Thy grace and the powerful patronage of Holy Mary of Good Success, I may never sin again. O Lord, have pity and mercy on me. Amen.

Are emotional affairs adultery? My husband had 2 single women he would help at a moments notice and leave me home alone. Once home he was totally checked out with me. He had his phone always near incase they wanted to connect and I became invisible. This went on for years as he used that it was his Christian duty to help these single women out for emotional support and fixing things for them. My husband said he wanted to move out after I told him those friendships needed to end. After a few counseling sessions with our priest, he decided to stay and work on our marriage. I stipulated the to 2 women needed to go as friends. Though he's stayed I could feel the deep resentment he's had for me because of my request. He says he loves me, he just doesn't like me. Pray for me and us. I'm trying to grow in whatever manner God wants me to.

I was granted an annulment by the bishop because I could not live with my ex any longer. He was abusive, an alcoholic and has many problems. God walked me through this tough time in my life. I am so thankful. I could get married in the church again but really not sure if I ever want to marry again after all the hurt I endured in my past. The divorce was chosen for me. I was willing to help him but he did not think he had any issues. It was very sad to see this happen. I was in danger of being hurt so I had to get away from him also. My husband & I are going on 44 years of marriage. When we got married we didn't really understand what we were doing. We practiced contraception for 25 years before finally having a parish priest who had the courage to speak regularly on the topic. After learning this we stopped but sadly, we didn't conceive again. We are blessed with two grown children & five grandchildren, so far. I can attest that marriage is the pathway to sanctity because it isn't easy but with God, all things are possible. I have especially loved these talks on marriage because I learned these lessons the hard way. Thanks be to God, I am married to a wonderful man & will be for the rest of our life.

(Mention your request here… for the intentions of @MorreHope and all of my brothers and sisters in need of prayer, worldwid, especially those in need of purgatorial prayer through Christ our Lord)
Amen.
Our Lady of Good Success, Pray for us...Amen❤

This is particularly hard to listen to. Without sharing all of my story, I'll just say that yes, we live with consequences of our choices. Once we've been convicted and can't right the wrong all we're left with is apologies, even though some won't be accepted, and trying our very best to live in the way God would have us live. It can be incredibly painful to wonder how things and people would be like if we'd chosen different. It does however contribute to an immense gratitude for our loving and merciful God. Our God who is always ready to take us back in right relationship with Him.

I feel sad for my 3 children and what they've had to endure over the last few years. I prayed to God that he could help renew our marriage and family, but over time I've come to realize how damaged our marriage is and that it might not actually be worth it and its better to move on and work on being the best father I cane be. 🙏

Marriage is a great good, a gift and a sacrament and there are ways it can be wounded in this broken world.
Adultery is marital infidelity, including adultery of desire. It's an injustice to one's spouse.
Divorce is a grave offence against the natural law, bringing disorder into the family and traumatising the children. It's always tragic.
Even if for some legitimate reason a couple needs to separate, they are still married to each other as marriage is a covenant and hence unbreakable except by death.
Marriage is a sign of the TRINITY. 🙏 🙏 🙏

To hear the Church say what they are going through is not the order of God but a choice. They know this already but to hear it would truly help them keep from hardening their hearts against parents love the Church and God. So many in our culture push them into affirmation therapy. These same professionals claim telling them such a thing is abusive to them and traumatizes them that a parent that does this is not permitted to have them for fear of alienation of the spouse seeking divorce. Omitting it here allows for the incorrect and less loving and merciful impression that makes so many divorced Catholics of an average information level feel hopelessly ostracized when they are left with no other option to seek a divorce in situations like Father Mike pointed out. What about your reason for divorce has nothing to do with anyone else?
It's the way one was treated during 36 yrs of marriage.
    Narcissistic behavior no trust.
    No communication.
I finally gave up. Built a protective wall around me until it was finished.
I waited until my 2 kids were adults.
Now my adult daughter hasn't talked to me in 8 yrs. My son understands.
Lies were told about me. I didn't leave for anyone!
The ex is now deceased. I did find someone, became engaged but he passed away . I did go to confession & confessed the whole thing. So now what? In the end he (ex) locked me in the bedroom & pulled a gun out & said he was going to kill me. I can tell you after that there was no going back for me. I was afraid of him for years. He had a temper.
So, I'm supposed to stay in a marriage where I am afraid?
Where I'm treated like his child rather than his wife?
I made my choice & because of it my daughter has ghosted me. I have one 15 yr old grandson that I haven't seen in 8 years. They moved several states away.
Is this my punishment? All I ever wanted was to be happy. At least I'm not afraid anymore. No more looking over my shoulder to see if he was going to finish what he started.
The worst thing is grieving someone that is still alive.

I am looking for people to please take a moment and pray with me for Souls in Purgatory. Can you help?
According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
    Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
    of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
    throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
    for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church,
for those in my own home,
    and in my family. Amen.
In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)
Father I need your grace again because I am not the witness I want to be.

Time: 4:54: Questions: Regarding the condemnation of desire of adultery, if the desire arises from the attraction between unmarried who are already married to their spouses, would that desire not simply not be a temptation; or would it be a desire that is being acted upon from an antecedent temptation.
In other words, if a married man and a married woman (who are married to their own spouses) work together in the same area and are exposed to each other over time and find themselves becoming attracted to each other out of common interests and rapport, have they already thereby committed the son of desiring adultery?
What if the devil tempts them with sexual thoughts but that they don't desire to arise in their imaginations? Temptations, even strong ones, might appear to be as sin insofar as it would be only characterized as a desire.

I think you could also argue that a spouse who realizes that they're developing strong feelings for someone other than their husband or wife, and does not take some action to re-establish boundaries or otherwise resolve the problem because they like the feeling of falling in love or getting attention, is committing a sin of omission.

While paragraph 2383 allows for the separation of a marriage in dire situations, it specifies that the marriage bond nonetheless be maintained. So, by that reasoning, if someone was forced to flee a marriage because of domestic violence, they would still be sacramentally bound to their abuser? Shouldn’t the victim be allowed a second chance at love? Similarly, what about the person described in paragraph 2386 as remaining faithful but nonetheless abandoned? Why should someone in that situation be barred from remarrying? In either situation, I don’t see how the marriage could be said to have never existed, which seems to be the formula for obtaining an annulment in paragraph 1629.

    • @diannedoyle8930
      @diannedoyle8930 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Simply put, because sin does not end a valid marriage. It may be a symptom or evidence of an invalid marriage , however. The Christian life is not all about seeking happiness on earth. Marriage is a particular cross that must be taken up and carried. That is the point of the vows. For better or for worse. It is a lifelong commitment. A lot of care is to be taken in the discernment of marriage. Of course if the marriage ends the participants are free to enter into the annulment process to determine the state of the marriage. There are characteristics that make up valid marriage and if any of them were absent at the time of the vows there will be evidence and the tribunal will make a ruling on that. I once read a book by Michael Smith Foster called Annulment The Wedding that Was which explains it well.

Annulment has been abused, causing scandal. Claiming that one was 'too immature' to enter marriage, annulments are handed out in the name of 'compassion' not truth. No matter how the other person changes, if one makes a lifelong vow, one doesn't get excused from it. Legal separation must be an option if needed for safety, but NO "remarriage." Divorce and remarriage to another is adultery. The church should not contribute to scandal.

It's worth remembering that in Genesis God made marriage and children part of women's punishment for the sin of Eve. It isn't supposed to be a happy state, st least for the woman. Men run around, men lose their temper and get stinking drunk and best their wives bloody. It's what happens and it's part of women's lot, and if you're obeying the dictum not.to use birth control, just where ya gonna go with your 11 kids and no job? So ladle on the pancake makeup, shut up.and make dinner.
When men commit adultery, it's a crime against the male owner (husband or father) of his adultery partner- not against his wife.
If a wife cheats, it's a crime against her husband, as she is his property, and what's more important, she runs the risk of bringing kids into the world that are not her husband's and have no right to his support.

That is not at all how Catholics view it. For us, marriage is not a punishment but "the one blessing not forfeited by original sin nor washed away by the flood."
My husband is one of the kindest people I know, but you'd better believe if he ever raised a hand to me or my children, we'd be out the door ASAP. The church wisely allows for separation and even civil divorce if necessary to protect spouses and their children from domestic abuse, as Fr. Mike said in the video. (Also, not using contraception doesn't mean you'll have 11 kids? We're not the quiverfull mentality folks; Catholics use NFP to space out the births of our children and plan family size. I know I definitely don't have 11 kids.)
Also your statements about how adultery is viewed from the male to female partner are not accurate to Catholic teaching. Adultery with someone other than one's wife is very much a sin against the wife, not just the affair partner. Fr. Mike discussed that in the video too.
