So with 2022 and 2023 Ford changed the design… Now tail lights have to be removed to install the backing plate / nut combo that the center bolts goes in to. Also the tightness you talk about on the connecting locks… just loosen the bolt a smidge. I had last extender for 8 years, never had an issue (well sometimes it didn’t always click in to place, but never broke one).
In my '13 I never used the side pins nor the yellow center pin. It always worked fine for me. I've got a '22 on order. I'll be getting another one of these extenders.
Great info and thanks. I am just installing mine in my 21 Raptor and I have heard it won't fit for the same reasons. So what i cannot see in the instructions is where the the mounting bolt sleeve goes and you show it exactely. It seems kinda floppy when the bolt is tight but I think it is meant to be that way to flip it around. I am still considering a rubber bed matt thin one as I find the spray liner very slipper that items could slide around or sharp items gouge the liner. Just a thought.

I finally got my '22 and the bed extender. My bed does not have the metal to thread the mounting bolts into. The holes are there though. In the kit there are two special backing nuts that will require me to remove the taillights.
@@GR018 , I wish, but no. I don't have a liner. I've seen trucks without the extender and I could see a backer of some sort has been riveted on before the bed was painted. I'll be measuring the hole diameter later. If it is the right size or smaller (because I can make it larger) I'll be installing a rivet nut. I doubt this plan will work because the existing is too big. That special backing nut will work just fine. Not ideal, but it'll work.
I used the backer nuts provided with the bed extender. It works. Not ideal though because you can't readily remove the extender without also removing the taillight. I'm pondering solutions for this.
@@GR018 turns out the bolts that came with the extension are self tapping so you have to use a hammer drill and just run them in. I forgot that's what I had to do with my 2012.

@atg4469 I opened up the holes in the sides of the bed to fit the pins on the extender. The one pin that goes down into the tailgate (yellow) I don't use.

Smart idea with the dremel. That’s what I did on my Platinum. I also used an M10 x 1.5 tap to clean out threads. Good stuff
I had this on my 2016. With spray in bed liner. It came from factory that way. I used it all the time. My new 2021 doesn’t have it. I want one.

Yea, you got it figured out. It's definitely a nice thing to have in the truck. I use it a lot to keep stuff near the tailgate.

Nope. On the 22 and up there are absolutely no threads. You have to purchase some washers and stop nuts in order for it to work.

I had these extensions on my 2012 and used them often. I ordered a set for my 2021 Lariat but it looks the mounting holes were never tapped.
The holes might be covered up by spray or some bolts might be there that need to be removed. I thought all the truck had holes tapped.

It's an almost identical product. But I'm not sure if the width and bolt height line up.
