Do you only recommend oil based inks on fabric?

It depends on the final use. If you plan to wash the item a lot I would use oil based inks, or fabric inks (these are usually heat set). Water based inks would work for items that won't be washed - maybe a wall decoration...

Never would have considered olive oil as a cleaner.

It works pretty well. I prefer using cheaper oils like canola oil, but I had a cheap bottle of lower grade olive oil. It worked.
