  • With a nod to the fabled Japanese practice of oyasute, which itself was rooted in Buddhist teachings, the film conjures a mythical modern Japan where an aging society has devised a plan to re-balance itself economically by informing its citizens older than seventy-five of the option of euthanasia. A 78-year-old woman faces the question of whether she should carry on or seemingly serve her society through self-sacrifice.

      The only reason they raised the age for the movie was they wanted certain actors that could no way pass for 19-20. I think Michael York who played Logan was in his mid 30s, and Richard Jordan who played Frances was almost 40, at the time. So they raised the age to 30.

    • @mrgopnik5964
      @mrgopnik5964 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Even if the elderly worked their entire lives, the economy doesn’t get to go in retirement. After retirement, old people become an expense, that needs to be maintained by the younger generations and since that generation didn’t have nearly enough kids to replace them on the workplace, all of a sudden the responsibility of caring for all these people fall upon the shoulders of fewer and fewer young people, who are overworked, underpaid and underprivileged. And since the west has been promoting a culture of narcissism since the end of WW2, those old farts couldn’t give a f*ck what the young generations are going trough, so they squeeze out whatever money is left, before the next French Revolution breaks out.

    • @ChiefMeat
      @ChiefMeat หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not how the Japanese retirement benefit systems work. While you're young enough to work, generally younger than 65 or younger, part of what you earn mandatorily goes to supporting elderlies, the disabled, etc. When you become one of them, it's the younger gens' turn to support the retired, etc. People younger than 48 are younger than the average age, so you can pretty much imagine how many people younger, active gens must assist nowadays.

    There’s not enough young people to take care of the elderly in some countries because they interfered with the natural reproduction numbers. I know China did. I don’t know if South Korea did, but I do know that their numbers are dwindling because I saw it on the news story. There are liberal views in the United States that having children is backwards and old-fashioned, and that women should be free instead of having children. I wonder if our future elderly will be taken care of.
