Hiking Colorado 14ers - Humboldt Peak

This video is of a hike of Humboldt Peak in the beautiful Sangre De Cristo range in Central/Southern Colorado. This was my first 14er in this range, and most certainly will not be my last.
The hike starts at the South Colony Lakes trailhead just outside of Westcliffe, Colorado. Starting from the upper 4x4 trailhead, the hike comes in at about 11 Miles round trip with 4,200 feet of elevation gain.
I had fantastic weather, and the basin that holds Humboldt Peak, Crestone Peak, and the Crestone Needle was breathtaking. Many people were camping at the lower and upper lake. The geology of the mountain range is very unique when compared to other peaks I have done in the state, which provides shocking prominence from the valley floor.
The hike itself was not too difficult. It starts with a 3 mile hike along an old 4x4 road which has since been decommissioned and turned into "the trail". The road soon veers left, which is where the dirt trail continues to the right. From here you begin to walk through the Wilderness area with beautiful views of The Crestone Needle coming into view. There were many camp sites along the way, with many more near the lake.
From the upper lake the trail begins climbing the ridge toward the saddle. Great switchbacks allow for elevation gain quickly, where the false summit comes into view. From there the ridge becomes class 2 with some large rocks toward the summit. The view from the top was excellent, with the Great Sand Dunes to the Southwest, and multiple 14ers in view. The summit beer was Crooked Stave Strawberry Coconut Milkshake IPA.

Currently I am editing a 4 day Grand Teton backpacking trip which has unbelievable footage.
I also hiked 14er San Luis Peak yesterday and took tons of footage. It has fall colors, a couple moose, and great craft beer!

Great video, hike and IPA beer! Would like to camp around the lake and summit Humboldt the next morning. Were there many mosquitoes? I heard July is a bad month for bugs there? Late August early September maybe better.
Mosquitos were not a problem for me, yet I was only there for a day hike. It is an awesome basin with both tundra and alpine camping opportunities. I always bring beer on my adventures. Definitely not anything higher than class 2.
