I saw Bob at an airport in line at Starbucks. I introduced myself and told him I had a home studio. He talked to me like a peer instead of a goofy fan (which I am). He gave me a few tips and couldn't have been nicer.

Bob Clearmountain! This is a wonderful surprise. An absolute legend. Back in the late 80's my friend and I would buy music just because he had worked on it.
Let's Dance - that delay apparatus with its pingpong was a millisecond on the slow side, and the vocals returned and appeared _so_ upfront just with being in time or even a bit relaxed and laid back. One of the greatest groove tricks, and Mr.Bowie immediately caught what was happening and said this is it, no more change...

Keith Scott is probably my favorite “unknown” guitar player. Absolutely love his older Strat tones.
Agreed. Into the Fire and Native Son are some of my favourite Bryan Adams songs and Keith Scott's tone is magical on those songs amongst many many other songs.
Me too. Great strat sound all through out the album. And drums were huge too. Reckless is having that human vibes which went missing in records Bryan did with Mutt.

I understand why everyone asks Bob about the Stones, Bowie etc. but my favorite group he worked with is Crowded House. An amazing band and his mixing of their albums is just impeccable

Good God... Went to listen to Del Amitri "Roll To Me" and got listening to "Tell Her This". That bass part is INCREDIBLE!!! It's like, "Can I play every note in the chord without hitting the root?"
Really enjoyed this interview. Bob remains one of my favourites. And funny to touch upon the CLA encounter. CLA's mixes are in your face, just like CLA himself is.
I noted the Yamaha SPX990 in his rack and saw the preset number and thought, oh interesting, some magic secret reverb he likes in there. So i check with my SPX990 what it is, symphonic chorus -_-
The other thing quickly mentioned in this interview but is so crucial to some of his best known mixes are the arrangements of the songs. Those huge snares work because there is nothing much else (especially in the intro's of these songs). That leaves a lot of space for a big dense reverb tail. Same with Let's Dance, that delay stuff only works in a sparser arrangement. Now i do more mixing, i tend to cut and mute more tracks in order to get more space in the arrangement. It really helps things sound better.
Well, symphonic chorus is by far the best effect in any of the SPX range, so there is that...
100% agreed on space in arrangement, when every 1/8th note is methodically filled, dynamics have nowhere to go.
@@nicdee316 Sure do like the Symphonic chorus. But I also still like some of the ER algo's among others. Rev7 and SPX990 are still much in use here. SPX900 I still use in live sound and also in my guitar rig (along with the FX500). Very cool for shoegazing stuff and the SPX90 was in guitar rigs a lot in the 80ies/90ies.
Side chaining a track to the vocal track with the EQ & limiter set for de-essing is a good idea. Thanks Bob & Pete!

These videos are great Pete! I really believe the engineers are the unsung heroes of many of our favorite music and it's great to get to meet them and hear the stories about how some of the legendary music they helped make came about! The delay in Let's Dance absolutely made that song! Of course it was a happy accident but that's how the best music comes out!

Got to do some collaborative work with Chris Kimsey around 2007 and met him in London through Bill Aucoin, original manager of Kiss, for his production company. Chris is a legendary producer in his own right and, at the time of the Stones’ “Tattoo You,” here single handedly culled together the record by piecing together the best outtakes of unreleased material from 1972-1979 and was able to navigate the choppy waters between Mick and Keith to craft what I had always thought was the Stones’ best album. We sat at a table for a few hours one night and he was just the nicest guy indulging me with stories, in particular about Tattoo You. Over a bottle of Limincello, nonetheless.
I asked for some advice and he told me a story about how he had done a mix of “Miss You” a couple of years earlier and had been driving down the pacific Coast Highway with the top down and it came on the radio and he thought to himself “what an amazing mix! I’m better than I even thought!” Some time later when he looked at the album credits for “Some Girls,” he had forgotten that they actually used Bob’s mix of the song and realized the folly of his error. The lesson? “Don’t be so precious about your own work!,” he said.
Another truly class act in the dubious world of rock and roll. Chris ended up buying Olympic in London where I believe he still resides. If you can get an interview with Chris, he’s an untapped wealth of great information and one of the most kind hearted people I’ve ever met in the business.
I also remember around that same time, Bill was handling a singer-songwriter, Cindy Bullens and, one day, while at Bill’s office, he pops in a cassette of her latest track, mixed by none other than Bob. In his Bostonian drawl, he shouted at me over the din of the playback, “Bawb is the best engineer I’ve ever heard mix!” I still remember the big lettering on the cassette label from Bob’s studio that read “Mix This!” I remember reading it as a challenge I wouldn’t be able to win!

Wow Pete, I was at that Bowie show as well, it was at B.C. Place, the stadium was just built and it was the first concert there. Regarding Bryan Adams, I almost bought one of Keith Scott’s old white plexis and got to pick his brain on some of his gear from those classic sessions, it was amazing the stuff shared with me, he’d be an epic guest, one of my favourite players and a great guy. Love the channel, awesome content as usual.
I was at that Bowie show too. And Keith’s an old friend, he had a cassette mix of ‘Reckless’ & we sat in his pickup & listened to the whole album. He was so exited about it.
