"When I felt bad I asked Pistorius to play Buxtehude's passacaglia. Then I would sit in the dusk-filled church completely involved in this unusually intimate, self-absorbed music, music that seemed to listen to itself, that comforted me each time, prepared me more and more to heed my own inner voices." Hermann Hesse

Somewhere, there is an Angel who is guiding us with the council of ancient masters,... both Hesse, and Buxtehude seem very much alive to me,... bringing all things to remembrance,.. I also feel comforted by familiar voices.

I have always loved Bach's Passacaglia ever since I first heard it as a child many decades ago. But nothing can compare with Buxtehude's magnificent piece.

Anyway Bach's Passacaglia is the most perfect of its kind. Bach is and always will be Bach, even if Buxtehude is beautiful. As organist I've played both in my organ concerts.

Buxtehude: Magic & Mystical. Bach: Mighty Metamorphosis. That's it in a pinch for both Passacaglias. I believe Bach wrote his passacaglia as a tribute to his godfather/mentor Johann Pachelbel. For two reasons: Bach turned 21 in 1706, which was a milestone ( the passacaglia has 21 variations with the fugal part) Secondly: Pachelbel passed away in the same year. Pachelbel's Ciaccona in f Minor sounds a lot more like Bach's passacaglia as well.

Bachs passacaglia is a tribute to his beloved teacher, for which he walked 350 kilometers by foot in 1705.Bachs music changed after he heard Buxtehudes Abendmusiken. There were ''strange notes''in his music after he returned to Arnstadt.Do not underestimate Buxtehudes influence on the young Bach.Pick an organ piece and you know immediately where the influence comes from!Greetings from a buxtehude organ fanatic.

DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE { BAD OLDESLOE HOLSTEIN 1637~1707 LUBECK } ~ PASSACAGLIA IN D { BUXWV 161 } ~ THOMAS ENGLER AN DER GLOSER ~.

    Dazu nochmal Hermann Hesse original:
„Wenn ich bedrückt war, dann bat ich Pistorius, er möge mir die Passacaglia des alten Buxtehude spielen. In der abendlichen, dunklen Kirche saß ich dann verloren an diese seltsame, innige, in sich selbst versenkte, sich selber belauschende Musik, die mir jedesmal wohl tat und mich bereiter machte, den Stimmen der Seele recht zu geben.“
    -
Egal, was andere meinen: ich finde diese Orgel charaktervoll - schöne Einspielung!

Søren Turin Also: the passacaglia is a fairly restricted form based on a fixed chord progression, so all passacaglias are going to be a bit reminiscent of other passacaglias, in the same way and for the same reasons that 12-bar blues songs tend to sound somewhat alike.

I know Bach hiked a good long way to hear Buxtehude. What I haven't found out is how Bach learned about Buxtehude--just rumor? Seems a long way to go just to satisfy one's curiosity. Anyway, I'm glad he did it, at the tender age of 22!

I believe one of the reason young Sebastian, went to Lubeck , was the hope that he would succeed old Buxtehude as organist, but it would appear that one of the condition was that he would have to marry his rather plain 30 year old daughter, young Bach decided not to accept the offer. It is possible that he had already intended to marry Maria Barbara, which he did in 1707, The same offer was made to young Handel, which he also declined, the poor man must have been desperate

It is a treat to hear a little-known organ of rich sound played by a musician who could be better known in the southern hemisphere. Maitre Engler, have your agent look into a tour south including NZ as soon as the current political "health" restrictions fail.
