  • This is the one mic challenge. Can I record an entire song with just a single Shure SM57? Yes! I prove definitively here that you can record drums, guitars, vocals, and bass with the most famous $100 microphone in existence. Seasoned professionals, weekend home recorders and beginners alike are all very familiar with this dynamic microphone; its often most people's first microphone purchase. For good reason too. A great value and something you'll keep for the rest of your life.
This really fun challenge was something I had been thinking about doing for years, I hope you enjoy!
This was tracked in Logic pro, with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i30 gen3, and just a handful of 3rd party and stock plugins.

The SM58 is indentical to the SM57 but they sound different because of the mic head. The grill on the SM57 is only a few mm away from the diaphragm and that gives you a huge proximity effect while the ball head on the SM58 puts the source away from it a little. The SM58 also has a little less highs because the foam on the ball head cuts some of them. The SM7B is a completely different animal. Larger capsule, different electronics and it has the cage which puts the sound source 6" away from the capsule so you get almost no proximity effect from it.

Thanks, lately I’ve been into dry vocals but I hear what you’re saying. Sometimes tons of delay and reverb help make a chorus special.

Fantastic song! Again, it's not about the tools. I love your practical approach to recording! Thank you for sharing!

Why didn't you just tune the upright bass to E flat like the guitar ???

Upright bass has a bridge and sound post that are built to withstand a specific tension. Orchestral instruments don’t have the flexibility a guitar does. Besides it’s good practice to play in Eb minor.

@revevague6256 Hmmm... I'll have to take your word for it as I dont play upright... so you know better than I do but a half step doesn't seem like all that much really.
No real comparison but I tune my 31" short scale electric bass down two half steps to D and with LaBella flats on it (pretty high tension strings) and it plays quite nicely like that. A bunch looser than E obviously but not crazy floppy at all.

@@7171jaycome to think of it John Cale (velvet underground) used alternate tunings on the viola so it might be feasible. I have a distinct memory of my violin bridge flying across the room and it almost hitting my teacher during upper strings class. I was playing with the tuning knob, was probably much farther off than a half step though.
