I can only hope for the best outcome as the people of Chuuk struggle with self-government. In the early 1960s my ship USS Brister DER 327 was one of 2 ships who routinely patrolled the Trust Territories of the Pacific. At that time Chuuk was called Truk Atoll. I have fond memories of visiting Moen Is. I'm not seeing it on maps but apparently the City of Weno is shown as the label for the island. I enjoyed visiting with the people of Chuuk and taking walks along the shoreline. I have photos taken there and souvenirs as well. I met a Peace Corp teacher who lived next to the back of the tunnel that leads to a gun emplacement overlooking the lagoon.
All the best to the people of Chuuk!

Emylynn I was there in the 70s my mom was peace corps director. They used volunteers from that to give medical care on each island. I only just started looking at TH-cam videos of chuuk. We called you truk back then. Truckese. I still know a little bit of the language. So sad to see so much obesity on the women now. I miss my island. 😔

Great highlighting some of core issues of our islands. But in my honest opinion unless someone changes the Chuukese culture, the Chuukese government and as a result the Chuukese lifestyle will go on as it is or maybe even worsen. The Chuukese culture is heavily intertwined into almost every aspect of the Chuukese life - politics, schools, etc. Unless you change the person you cannot change the people. and thus - this will always be the life of Chuuk. It's gonna take a superhero to clean all this up.

Know wonder why chuukese people went away from chuuk trying to find better living, and caused violence due to the burden they carring within them.this problem is from missed use of the funds, the people trusted the leaders selected them with hope of confident to get in,and fix the problems not add up more.

Chuuk is sitting on a gold mine with all that ocean and fish. Not to mention they could develop cruises from Japan and Taiwan. They could develop underwater turbines that can produce electric. They should hire some impressive sales person to bid for funds from wealthy people in the usa like warren buffet. They can develop an endowment like Harvard. Develop a fish packing plant and create jobs. The first thing they need are good solid professional ROADS and reliable plumbing. They should build a few high rise buildings and consolidate people into them and do away with the shacks. The whole the layout seems very unplanned. They should have the fed. gov. come in and lay it out like a military base so it's clean and organized. How will this be paid for? Tourism, Fish, Oil/gas exploration, Endowment funds donated by wealthy, Manufacturing. Got to think outside the box.

Micronesia requested their independence in 1986. The Compact with the US ends in 2023. This is when they fully takeover their financial independence. Two trust accounts have been set up with the federation. One is controlled by Micronesia, the other is a separate account with US funds in it. At that point each year, the US will conduct audits of the government use of the funds. If the audit does not pass, the American funds will be returned to the US. Micronesia asked for their independence, it is their responsibility to conduct their country. America has its own problems to deal with, including the fact that their own country is in debt $23 plus trillion and cannot no longer afford to fund the world.
