OMG, I love it!!! I wonder if you could color the water and maybe you some food coloring or something. It would look even better with brown spikes.
Julie. I would like to see if you could add some color. Maybe pigment or something to see if there is colored spikes. Thank you for the inspiration
Since you did have a problem with the mouth, maybe adding a bit of clay or something into the mouth would help stop that. Could even use the clay as a barrier to shield some features from being covered up but not sure how the solution would react with the clay. Could try growing on it like a growth medium but if its a stable oil based clay it might not react as a growth site.

Out of curiosity can you pour hot water over him and just reuse that same solution? Or do you have to start from scratch he looks cute either way thank you Julie❤
Try hotgluing them down first if they float
This is perfect because Hedgehog hair are about same length. If there longer it would look funny, in my opinion anyway! He's ADORABLE! ❤ did you put something on face so it wouldn't grow crystals?
I'm wondering whether you wanted more porcupine quills growing than hedgehog which I think has more shorter spikes. This turned out quite well! :)

Could you use alcohol in to color the crystals or food coloring?

I think she said she uses food coloring cause the alcohol ink may disrupt the reaction.
You could have put sand in that hole and then seal the hole so he won't float
