    I had the distinct honor and privilege to play for Lou Rawls at the Meadowlands with Hank Jones Avery Sharpe Bobby Watson What a tremendous gig brought in at the last hour but we were Cookin, Lou's baritone voice is the 8th wonder of the world beautiful to your soul myself the drummer had to focus because I was being drawn into Lous Magic.

    Pound for pound Lou is one of the best male vocalists....ever! His phrasing and unique timbre are well worth the entrance money and his interpretation of this song is a classic

    I am 65 and I have been way into jazz and singers a long time, somehow I did not know that Lou Rawls just owned this tune! The studio version is terrific, but this is just plain stunning!

    Sadly, that generation of performing artists is gone. UNLESS, you happen upon a black Baptist or Pentecostal Church. Then voices like Lou Rawls' and jazzy=bluesy musicians can still be heard. There's a fabulous organist here on Y/T playing a great Summertime. See: Billy Preston-Summertime (5:22). Also, Lou Rawls/Stormy Monday(1989). This is great with tenor sax man Stanley Turrentine. Tremendous!

    Elegant, timeless and deep. Lou not only pours on the steamy side of lyrical dynamism, he phrases passion in delectable portions of fantasy. Thank you for this!

    Beautiful rendition from Lou Rawls. I've been looking for an example of a male vocalist covering this one and I've found a gem. I'll use it as a model for singing it with my group.

    I saw Lou live in Reno or Tahoe in the mid 60's. He was the headliner and Sergio Mendes & Brazil 66 was on first. Sergio's group put on a fantastic show and I was worried that Lou had to follow such a great act.
    When Lou came on he was backed by a big band and that's all he needed. What an outstanding performance he gave.

    Thank you for posting this and introducing me to The Lighthouse All Stars. These cats played wonderfully on "Willow." They simply disappeared and simply played very well so that all I and I heard were their instruments. And then they did it again, swinging very well. Was this the house band for the show? WOW!!!

      +Leslie Westbrook Hi Leslie. I'd have to go back and look at the complete episode (these are snippets of the actual program), but Frank (my dad) usually did credit the musicians somewhere in the program. Where are we without the musicians?

    • @11thNote
      @11thNote 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Out-of-blue, I selected the video because, for a very long time, i've been seeking to hear that song played with the *right* arrangement - the story. Many come close -- BUT today I have found it ! The musicianship of it all was amazing - what a great arrangement from your dad and working with it all.
      My father (Champ Champagne) was in the same profession as your father (mid-50s to 1970s).
      As I was watching it, it reminded me foundly of my father. I feel the studio energy ... I was a studio-kid 5yrs old (shhh! recording...) Then I was going to do a new comment but your post of 2 years ago caught my eye.
      Perhaps our fathers instigated this.
      Be well in mind-heart.
      :-)

      @lindabaer4086 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree completely---this is consummate musicianship all around; the piano had me enthralled with just the intro! Accompaniment is its own art--Leslie, your father was both a gifted, soulful, and sensitive soloist and well as a most sensitive accompanist. Thank you for letting us know about your father.

    Although the accompaniment is different (of course), Rawls' vocals are almost a note-for-note recreation of his performance of this tune from his first LP (with Les McCann), "Stormy Monday."
    (Live in the studio: You're hearing them better than they're hearing themselves, and with no processing of any kind... could this be done today?)
    Note the performance of "Topsy" at the end:
    Local, live TV really used to be this good, and not just in L.A.
    Addendum:
    How I wish Frank had named all of the personnel in this quintet, not just Rumsey and Cooper.

    Hey wanted to let everybody know that there is now an "Official Lou Rawls Fan Club" on Facebook, and much of the family and close friends are members. We are doing some things to keep Lou's music out there! It would be a joy to see folks out here join the club. We are looking for friends, musicians in Las Vegas as well and soon L.A. Also looking for financial backers for the Official Lou Rawls Tribute Performance Project. You can contact me, Lon Dorsey on Facebook. We're doing a lot! Thanks!
