i first seen your clamp and wondered why on earth plasic, then i seen your a woodworker not a metal woker. reading helps! good video. you helping me tap my thermostat housing on a 79 chevy luv
Nice video. What about if there's good thread down in the hole but at the top (starting point) it's not so good? Bolt goes in at a angle for the first few threads.
Okay, what on Earth am I doing wrong? I have a tap and die set, I drilled the stripped hole up one size (an M5x0,8 mm hole requires a 4,3 mm bore apparently), I put a drop of engine oil, and I started threading in the tap, but it just doesn't go in. I turn and turn, it works out plenty of chips, I turn backwards after every turn, but even when I think it has caught, I can pull it out with ease. And the hole just keeps widening. The set is brand new, how could it already be blunted?
1. drilled/tapped hole not straight. Get a tap guide to help keep it straight. 2. don't use engine oil; it is too thick. You need tap oil. 3. Once it catches do 1/8 turns and back tap out. 4. If you hole is destroyed, you'll need to use a Heilcoil.
No! Pitch is NOT the number of threads per inch. Pitch is the distance between threads. You determine the distance by dividing 1 by the number of threads per inch. In this case, 1/18 = .0555. Rounded up the pitch will be .056.
Excellent video thank you. I'm going to try tapping on some aluminium soon. I have a novice question I was wondering if I want to use an M2 tap to make a thread do I need to drill a 2mm wide hole or slightly narrower? Thanks!
99% of all mower spindles are not tapped you use regular bolts and they self tap. I don't know why people think mower spindles come tapped they do not.... You just did a whole drug out process that is completely not needed. The only reason you think your old spindles are tapped, that is because the bolts cut threads in spindle. Next time stress the importance of oil when tapping .
Yup! So many people returning spindles and leaving bad reviews because they are ignorant. A few companies have been catching on and tapping their spindles to avoid this.
Thank you! First time threading a lawn mower spindle.

Great video. I'm about to do this for the first time, I appreciate the clear instructions.
Thanks, just take your time
It went very well, no problems. Thanks.

Slightly narrow
Did you just assume that the holes were the correct diameter? I think it would have been advisable to check with the appropriate drill bit.
I did check
Didn't you just cut the threads in the wrong direction? Aren't the bolts supposed to threaded in from the top side of the mandrel? Does it matter?
It doesn't matter

Didn’t pay attention in English class
English probably just isn’t his first language..
GET A REAL VISE WILL YA!?? ;-}
These works great for a wood shop, I used to have a good Vise, but I broke it.
