  • We have been getting hammered with the price of lumber lately! With all these dead standing trees on Berm Peak, it's time to tap into our reserves and start getting lumber a different way.

I used to watch your videos, religiously and then I bought a 2019 specialized rock hopper full suspension and had it for a month before it got stolen and stripped from parts by a homeless person. As a forester with one of the largest timber producers in the world, this is precisely a scaled down version of a harvesting operation! You got the feller which cuts the logs and places them in bunches, then a skidder to drag the logs to a loader, which in my case will cut the logs to length instead of the fellerbuncher, and then load them on a trailer to be trucked to a mill. The high production lumber mills nowadays have super high tech equipment that does exactly what Audie does but in a split second. The waste chips then go towards firing kilns to dry the freshly cut lumber. I can't imagine the skill and experience it takes to determine manually how to cut up the log. Computers will scan the logs and somehow they work up a pattern to get the most out of them in milliseconds. It's amazing stuff!

I'd recommend doing practice runs and getting to know what the puddle should look like and be sure to use that chart that is on your machine for proper settings. After gaining experience you can customize settings based on feel. It takes lots of practice to get good at welding. I was lucky to have a good teacher who let me practice a whole lot and that helped me improve. Take your time and pay attention to how your welds look. Good luck Seth!
