You do have to consider that each team in the MLS has three designated players. This effectively means they have a salary cap and can only spend massive money on three of the players in their roster.

So Shaquiri earning 40% of the total wage bill just means that his status as a DP puts him above the salary cap, and therefore above the rest of the team combined.

As an American, the MLS has already grown more popular than the NHL. The league is doing fine and I feel like you're underestimating American capitalism. Look at salaries for NFL, NBA, and MLB players. Sure the MLS isn't close to surpassing those leagues but the U.S. is a massive country where even a fraction of the population following MLS is enough to keep the league afloat and handing out contracts to their designated players. Less people watch it around the world but similar to Aussie rules football, we don't need the rest of the world watching one of our leagues for it to be successful. Our population makes up for that.
