In case nobody noticed, Hermione struggled in Potions class this year because she followed the schoolbook's instructions, the first 5 years of Potions Hermione, along with everyone else, would follow the instructions written on the board by Professor Snape(The Half-blood Prince) 😊

The scene where Dumbledore conjures the firestorm to save Harry might be the single best example of the movies improving on a scene from the books. It does such a good job conveying Dumbledore's raw power, even in his weakened state, to the point that we can hardly imagine what he was capable of in his prime.

The coolest thing is that in the book Harry feels very lost and abandoned and in these (last) years at Hogwarts he kind of finds a "friend" in the Haf-Blood Prince, who turns out to be Snape. Snape kind of uses the potions book as a diary and Harry identifies with all the suffering and bullying that Snape went through!
then when the plot twist happens, the shock of finding out who the Haf-Blood Prince is is even more shocking.

One of my favorite things visually about this franchise is that once the world learns that Voldemort is back almost all of the vibrant and bold colors of every scene are drained. As if the world is literally growing darker out of fear of Voldemort. It’s such a great creative touch.

They miss it because the film pushed the entire textbook mystery into the background. If you happen to look away from the screen for the brief moment that Sectum Sempra is revealed in the textbook, you wouldn't even get what just happened. If you didn't read the book first it's almost impossible to pick up all the stuff about the textbook on a first watch. That's not a viewer failing, it's a movie failing.
This movie is an outright awful adaptation, not because it made changes from the source, but because those changes (especially the change in focus from the textbook mystery and the Voldemort investigation to the teen relationship drama) caused the film to be hard to follow whenever it needs to actually reveal anything important.

I hate the scene where Snape had the perfect opportunity to take his book from Harry after Harry wounded Draco in the movie. In the book, Harry didn’t bring the Half-Blood Prince book with him when he fought Draco. After the fight and Snape healed Draco, he ordered Harry to stay in the bathroom until he gets back. When Snape returned, he asks Harry where he learned this curse and Harry lied saying he found it in the library book. Obviously, Snape was the one who invented it, being the Half-Blood Prince so he knows Harry’s lying. Snape then forces Harry to retrieve all of his school books and Harry did so but he also grabbed Ron’s potion book. Before he returned to Snape, he stopped by the Room of Requirement to get rid of Half-Blood Prince book. When Snape puts together that Ron’s potion book is not his and considered what he had done to another student, he gives Harry Saturday detention for the rest of the term, meaning Harry could not play at the Quidditch final.

Kristen, very insightful comment about the vanishing cabinet. In the book Jenny does not accompany Harry to the Room of Requirements to hide the book, Harry goes alone. He hides it, but in a way he can find it later. There is a large tall cabinet with a man's bust on it. Harry puts the book on top of the cabinet and moves the bust on top of the book, he then spots a Tiara and put the tiara on top of the man's bust to mark where the book is. This Tiara and bust will be important later. Also there is a great battle in the books after Dumbledore is killed. When Harry drank the liquid luck, he only took a sip, and gave the rest to Ron and Jinny to use. Ron, Jinny, and others from Dumbledore's Army takes a sip just before the big battle which happens, and none of the Dumbledore's Army is harmed, but they harm a lot of the Death Eaters.
The reason Harry remembers about the bazor is because of his first lesson in potions when Snape is trying to humiliate Harry, Snape drills into Harry what a Bazor is.

One big disadvantage of movies is that they can't dwell much on the books as a series is capable of. Like... Dumbledore showed Harry a lot more memories that explored Voldemort's upbringing and past. Like... in the books, we got to know about his parents... how his mother used magic to force his father to fall in love with her and he abandoned her once she freed him. We learned about possible Horcruxes... which are 6 in total, as Voldemort wanted to have his soul divided in 7 pieces (including the piece in his body). You can see his obsession with the number 7 in that room of his in the orphanage... possibly because 7 is said to be the most powerful number.

Harry could not enrol in Potions in his sixth year because Snape gave him an exceed expections instead of outstanding which is the grade that Harry needed. Snape only accepts students with outstanding but Slughorn is willing to take anyone who has exceed expectations. I've seen this film and read the book at least half a dozen times each, and something never occured to me until watching this reaction: one of the most disturbing things about this film (and the book) is the implications of the location of the Horcrux that Harry accompanies Dumbledore to retrieve; it's near where Tom Riddle used to go on vacations to the coast with his fellow orphanage residents when he was a boy. Given the presence of the infiri -- the zombies in the water -- it's highly likely that Voldemort plotted, or even carried out a murder in that location when he was a child. Or even more disturbingly: returned there years later as an adult to commit many more.

LOL For me that was where I finally learned that I was done with the books. Sirius‘ death in the previous book already was so frustrating since there was that massive buildup to his character over the third book but then he dies before he contributes anything meaningful to the story. And Dumbledore‘s death was the point where I just couldn‘t bare Rowling‘s lazy resolutions anymore.
But since the films tone down or outright cut the stupid stuff from the books, they are really good. I mean just look at the cinematography in this one. Or the scene with the „In noctem“ choir song when Malfoy prepares for Dumbledore‘s return. Goosebumps!

    • @Sobsilus
      @Sobsilus หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@ How is this your conclusion from this thread? Ialready said that the story is fine, but Rowling‘s execution sucks. 😅
The time travel plot in Prizoner of Azkaban is fine. But the setup is weak and the execution is bad. Lazy writing. The conflict „save Buckbeak and Sirius“ can also be resolved without time travel. Rowling desperately wanted to have time travel in there, but was too lazy to set it up properly. You can‘t have time travel when there are less intrusive methods. Also, time travel can‘t be as convenient as it is in Harry Potter. Otherwise it will always create the problem that a new conflict could be solved by time travel, but isn‘t. Once you have something in your story, you can‘t ignore it. But Rowling does. Lazy writing.
I don’t dislike the Chamber of Secrets plot, but if the only one in this universe who can figure it out is a 12-year-old that didn‘t even know about the wizarding world two years ago… I‘m sorry, but then you have a universe full of complete idiots. E. g. why didn‘t Dumbledore just take a time turner after the first attack, go back in time, and carefully observe the attack to investigate? I don‘t say that is how Rowling should have solved it, but simply having Hermione figuring it out off-screen is lazy. It‘s like the BBC Sherlock series where Sherlock constantly figures out stuff off-screen. Yeah, thanks for letting us in on the detective work.
I don‘t dislike Goblet of Fire as a story, but Barthy Crouch jr.‘s plan was absolutely ridiculous. He HAD to put Harry through the entire Triwizard tournament? Really? He couldn‘t just grab Harry and shove him into the flew network? Or hex Harry during a Hogsmeade visit and disapparate with him? Really? Their best option was to create this needlessly elaborate scheme that could go wrong at any turn?
Don’t get me wrong. Of course all stories have loose ends or inconsistencies to some point. But Rowling is just extremely lazy. She throws random new stuff in the story all the time, but never really integrates it. And that leads to all these problems down the road. Another symptom of her lazy writing is the lack of character development. A talented author might have executed all that a lot better. Unfortunately we had Rowling come up with that story first.
The films couldn‘t solve all of it, but at least they cut some of the most ludacrious stuff.

It was very difficult to make, disastrous if made wrong, and required six months to brew before it was ready to be consumed. It was meant to be used sparingly, as it caused the drinker to succumb to giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence if taken in excess. It was also highly toxic in large quantities. Felix Felicis was a banned substance in all organised competitions, such as Quidditch, along with all other methods of cheating. the potion was not able to better the chances of the drinker against particularly powerful enchantments. There's also a modified version of the potion that makes you unlucky.
over-reliance on it may have led to dangerous overconfidence, giddiness, and recklessness in the users even when not using the potion

It is even creepier in the book with the meeting between Dumbledore and young Tom. In the movie the line is "I can make bad things happen to people who are mean to me. I can make them hurt - if I want." But in the book, it is different: "I can make bad things happen to people who annoy me. I can make them hurt - if I want."
I wish they'd gone a bit more into the Tom Riddle memories. There were quite a few others that they delved into with the book. Tom was born of Meriope Gaunt. She charmed a handsome muggle man with a love potion, got pregnant by him and thought that he might love her for real now so stopped the use of the potion and when Tom regained his wits, he left his pregnant wife. She was heartbroken and birthed Tom in the orphanage before she herself died of a broken heart. Some believe that the product of love potion will be bereft of love. Kind of a wizard sociopath. They do not have the capacity for love and some other emotions.
The 'cure all' was a 'Bezoar', which is in the extended cut of Philosopher's Stone that Snape, in the first potions lesson asked Harry what a Bezoar was and he then follows up with the answers, ignoring Hermione's waving frantic hand and says, "is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and will cure you of most poisons."

A bit late to these reactions, know you're already finished but just have a couple things that were removed from movies that were in books you might find interesting. Snape is called half-blood prince because he was half blood with muggle father and witch mother and his mother's last name was Prince. This is also the year Harry and everyone in his year started learning non-verbal magic in school (like levicorpus a spell invented by Snape).

I've noticed Ginny seems more dominant toward Harry in the films (especially this one). I like how in-control she is in the kiss scene, she keeps gently telling him what to do almost like she's soothing a child, and he just obeys her without question.

Fun fact: apparation and disapparation are the same thing but used as apparation means to arrive and disappartion means to leave so when you disapparate from one place you then apparate to another

I was severely disappointed when I first saw this movie. This book is my favorite mainly because of Voldemort’s pasts which always fascinates me but the movie cut way too much out of it and kept too much of romance drama. Could at least cut the Burrow attack and some of Ron’s scenes with Lavender, make 2 or 3 more backstory chapters of Voldemort, as well as naturally develop the relationship between Harry and Ginny on top of her great personality. Draco’s mission could be explored a bit more too.

Kudos to Kristen on recognizing the normal, the real in their adolescent behavior. Harry turns 16 years old at the beginning of "Half-Blood Prince" don't forget. (That means his 17th birthday -- adulthood in the wizarding world, similar to our 21 here in the U.S. -- is very significant.) I know she's controversial but I give credit to Jo Rowling for her writing that gave realism to her fantasy series in not only this but other aspects of the series.
I agree and disagree with your opinion about leaving out the school stuff. I agree they couldn't have included everything but some of what was left out is significant. Learning how to disapparate and the complications from that, for example, plays into what happens in "Deathly Hallows." Taking a few minutes -- no more than that -- to include that would have helped. Lupin and Tonks' story in HBP and moving forward is very significant to one of the series' main themes -- what it means to be family, importance of parents, especially fathers, even when they're flawed (Tom Riddle's, Draco's, Harry's, Snape's) and plays an important part in DH, which they left out of the films. Leaving out Bill and Fleur's story in HBP -- including the Wealey's coming to battle at the end -- would make their story in DH more meaningful. And the family conflict with Percy (which started in Order of the Phoenix and was dropped altogether in the movies) would stop reactors saying, "Who's that?" when he shows up in DH. It would have also made the Weasley family less a fantasy and more real.
And they had no trouble splitting #7 into two parts. Why not split others? There was no reason to split #7 anyway. They filled in none of the plot holes and left others, so what was the point.
I still enjoy watching reactions and hope you two read the books (again in one case). And you MUST watch the 20th anniversary documentary when you're done. Kristen, especially, will enjoy that.

What annoys me when I watch this movie is that they kept in the love potion subplot, but completely left out the important reason love potions were introduced. Voldemort's mother was giving his father a love potion when Voldemort was conceived. It made him incapable of feeling love. Huge point in Voldemort's backstory that was just left out, but I guess a little dark for the target audience to have a kidnapping, drugging, sex-slave subplot.

@@deonnelson9780 na you actually got it wrong. When we first watch something our emotions are activating. If something emotional is happening and you're not allowing me to sit in that emotion/moment by constantly saying little quirks and quips because you know what's coming next, you're not being a gracious guide into what you already know and experienced. He completely changed his approach to HP reactions because of the complaints, but you can obviously see the ticks he's having.
