Good point. That is a mistake. I should have written that the probability is **proportional** to g exp(-E / kT). In order for the equal sign to be correct, I should have divided by the partition function. I got a little lazy because we only care here about whether p_α is larger or smaller than p_β. And since they both should be divided by the same partition function, it's not actually necessary to know what it is. But I should have explained that more clearly. Thanks for the correction!
