I remember first seeing Judy on television in Atlanta doing the news in the early 1980s, if I remember correctly, and I immediately thought, "What's she doing here? She's way too good for little old Atlanta. She needs to be elevated to some top spot. She's going places." It surprised me to think that so quickly and wondered why. I don't usually judge others so immediately and I didn't care much about newscasters. Turned out I was right. Judy Woodruff is a truly high-quality person and she emits that vibe without effort.

I remember that Cokie Roberts gave an interview, shortly before she died, in which she said that women were becoming increasingly "sissified" in our society. It's interesting to me how adversity produces purpose and determination. The women of the generation of Judy Woodruff, Cokie Roberts, Lesley Stahl, and their contemporaries, set an example that is difficult to emulate, given the changing set of circumstances. People need to reflect on the challenges they face in their lives and, instead of feeling resentful, use those difficulties to push them forward.

I have enormous admiration for this reporter/anchor. The 'why' questions she is hoping to understand and explore are the most important ones that this country and its citizens need to get an understanding of. Years ago, Bill Clinton wanted to start a national conversation about what it means to be an American in such a diverse experiment that America has been and is more so today. Sadly, many in the country hyphenate their understand always focused on what's in front of the hyphen, that is, Irish-American, African-American, Conservative-American, Gay-American, etc. But we never come to a common understanding of 'American', so we don't see what we all have in common and focus on how we are different. Interestingly, when one travels to or lives in other countries, we soon find out that we are just labeled Americans even when we are traveling in a very diverse group of Americans. It's time for our people to explore what it means to be an American in 2022.

When Americans travel in Europe from country to country, do we ask the locals what it means to be a European? No. If we did, what kind of response would we get? England made their response clear (well, sort of) and they may very well regret it. There are benefits to being a member of the European Union that can't be had otherwise. Our states are like European countries with their citizens more attuned to their own culture than that of the rest of the country. Why wouldn't we, therefore, be of differing views? What if our states could withdraw their "membership" at any time like England? What if other countries could join the US like Ukraine has wanted to join the European Union since 1993? It's all in how you look at things.

I was not born in the States but I was born with dual citizenship, with an American passport. My family suffered greatly due to the incomprehensible terror attack 20 years ago, but a few years after I was attending a July 4th barbecue and it sunk in.
I always think of the first few minutes of Aaron Sorkin's THE NEWSROOM and the rant that Will's character has on ... what makes America great, but the fact is, with her faults and courage the US has so much to be proud of. Be proud to be a citizen of these great United States!

DonDon - I had a similar experience when I moved from SF Bay area to Idaho, where people are so much more conservative in their thinking. Idaho is a much more homogenized society. I grew to miss the diversity of the Bay Area. People from all walks of life, many unique cultures and perspectives live here. For all our challenges, we have some of the best food, great music, intelligent and educated people in the world. Definitely a different perspective. Diversity is a strength. We need to learn better how to embrace it.

Despite how much the ideal is that news reporters are not supposed to be part of the story, I found this piece unusually enlightening. I appreciate learning something about a reporter/anchor's personal life. It helps add context. Learning about Judy's son says plenty about her ability to empathize. Learning about her experience with lecherous male bosses was also illuminating. That said, I find Judy to be one of the more fair-minded of journalists who shows all sides of issues.
