      Ironically, all this argument about what to call it, when it was named after Masahiko Kimura, who was most famously a judoka, but more importantly he was also a catch wrestler. The whole reason Kimura was in Brazil in the first place wasn't to fight any Gracies, it was as part of a pro wrestling tour of South America. And Jigoro Kano got the ude-garami from the Western grapplers anyway.
      Doesn't matter what it's called, the important thing is that the term you're using is recognised by the listener.

    • @Bourikii2992
      @Bourikii2992 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even more ironically is that it's real name is like gyaku ude gurami.

    • @johnh8546
      @johnh8546 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kimura? Do you mean double wrist lock? Just messing with you. Sakuraba learned it as a catch wrestling technique so he would have heard it called a double wrist lock. It’s called a Kimura in BJJ after a man of the same named used it to tap out one of the Gracies.

    • @Bourikii2992
      @Bourikii2992 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helio didn't tap so Kimura broke his arm twice and almost a 3rd but Helios corner threw in the towel.

    • @johnh8546
      @johnh8546 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Con Cahill tap out force to submit same concept. You are correct though Helio’s pride wouldn’t let him tap even though he was beaten. Same as Saku vs Renzo the ref had to call that one.

    I wish I could ask him if he always uses the thumb in the grip. I’ve recently switched from the grip with the thumb to the monkey grip and I feel much stronger with it and it doesn’t kill my thumb joint.
    Any opinions? Is it just personal preference?

    • @puertoricanrum2163
      @puertoricanrum2163 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The monkey grip is rarely used in Catch Wrestling. Sakuraba learned the double wristlock (Kimura) from the late Billy Robinson. In catch you would usually grab lower on the lower wrist, almost at the hand.

    • @LOLLYPOPPE
      @LOLLYPOPPE 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never seen the point in using a monkey grip but do what you want and I have never not finished a kimura either, if I lock the figure of four it’s a done deal. According to Danaher it doesn’t matter, it comes down to personal preference

    I do a version where I get double wrist lock when my back is taken, then I turtle, from there I shoulder roll, as I roll I extend the arm out of the opponent, like Sakuraba does in the video, the lock comes on quick and people tap fast, its quite the painful submission.
