I like your enthusiasm. Most of the people in Croatia has some kind of trauma, unfulfilled dreams ...You grew up in USA, country with great opportunities. ... It is good that you spread enthusiasm around yourself to Croatians.

I have goals of moving back to Croatia in the next couple of years even tho i have lived in Canada for 45 long years. Our family home is in Rakitje a suburb of Zagreb in one direction and Somobor in the other. I was born in Zagreb 49 yrs ago tomorrow 😊 The more I talk about it the more desperate (like on a cellular level) I am to move back. You're super adorable I seriously enjoy your videos !

My dear friend from America came to me at the party. She always smiled. When she spoke or listened to us, her smile was always on her face. It seemed strange to us, you can not always be smiling. It looked fake. But later I realized that it was probably a matter of cultural differences. Facial expression is much stronger for Americans than for Croats. That's my opinion.

You hit a specific topic! How about helping on a romantic level? A Cro. lady I met in 2014 and me have become more intimate lately in our friendship, it may lead to romantic involvement. Our connection is undeniably strong. Her being there and me in California seems be no concern to her.
Knowing cultural differentials could help people like me NOT make a royal screw up when trying to be sweet. I want to know what do Croatian ladies respond to most, like when one gives flowers to his sweeheart in America. If you do that in Russia it's not good!
Personal note: You're fun! May your sparkle never dim.

Hey Kaleigh, I've been pondering a move to Croatia here recently and have more mundane questions....like what's the banking system like? Do Croats have products like checking accounts, are mortgages and credit cards easy to get, do you have to file taxes in Croatia and then turn around and file taxes with the IRS, etc. Are you now a Croatian citizen (and if not, what kind of hoops do you need to jump through to obtain one); what's the US staff like at the embassy, are they a helpful resource? Do you vote in US elections, and if so....how does your vote count (like from an electoral college aspect, are you included in votes from the state of WA, etc...)? Are homes powered by gas? electric? What are utility bills like relative to the back in WA? How progressive is society there? How are people with a different skin color, sexual orientation, religion, or nationality treated? I know that's a lot of questions being thrown at you, but would love to hear some of your perspective on these when you can. Thanks. :)

WOW!! So many amazing great questions! I am absolutely going to save this and answer them in a video! I hope that's okay :D but yes, really quick, there are banks and regular bank accounts (with online and mobile banking!) here! Homes are powered by both electric and gas (gas for heating and stoves) - completely modern! I hope that helps in the meantime ;)

Awesome video! I mostly agree with your observations. Re Croatian guys/girls vs US folks, what really made me get it was the coconut/peach comparison. So, Europe is a coconut culture. People are very hard on the outside but as you drill deeper, they soften up, they open up and become really genuine once you break through that hard outer shell though it takes time. Whereas Americans a peach culture, meaning very soft on the outside, easy to chat up, always smiling and friendly from the get go but eventually you hit that pit, that hard shell and they tend to close up.
This realization really helped me get it. I never understood why I make friends so easily in North America but have it so hard in Europe (esp ofc with east europe and russians) Or why does it seem I get along so well with not just Americans but also every Japanese or Brazilian I meet (cuz theyre also peach cultures) yet Europeans I always found so cold and so difficult. So that kinda reasonated with me. Still learning about coconut cultures cuz its sooo not my personality but I find you really gotta have a moment with those people, you gotta share personal stuff and thats how you build up that trust. Its not gonna be like in the US where u go to the bar and u feel u made 10 new friends that night, exchanged contacts with everyone etc. Aaaaah, Croatia/Europe is different.

I guess it makes you a bit angry not understanding what they talk about when they talk croatian at work. Quick advice: learn croatian! I mean, as much as it seems to be an advantage being american and working for an international company (which makes english as main business language your mother tongue) it seems to be this much of disadvantage. It's like, if you wanna be a successful in some business here in balkans you have to learn english and german plus croatian. 3 languages already plus maybe some italian later on. I mean, switzerland itself has 4 official languages.

Oh boy, are you in for a surprise when it comes to education in Croatia... Most of the children/people leaving schools are incapable of doing anything. They are not working on developing skills (of any kind) or critical thinking or problem solving. That is why most people have Wikipedia/quiz-style factual knowledge, but aren't sure what to do with that :)
Please be aware this is not a criticism on your answer, it's just a comment. It is understandable that you haven't gotten in touch with Croatian educational system just yet, but when you do - I'm sure you'll quickly realize it's not that nice and fluffy at all :)

@@KaleighHendershot We have very point based education, it's based on memorizing stuff. So let's say you are bad at that kind of learning. You will have issues in Croatian schools since teachers are in most cases very robotic and detached from the subject since they got their programme to follow or they get sacked since they haven't been doing their "job" in that case.
I mean you will know a lot of stuff, which is good... but maybe you won't be able to understand some of them as well. Since they do not have time to actually individually change approach for each student.

I am born in Zagreb, living in Canada now since childhood. I visit Croatia every year and love my birth country. In Canada, I work as a teacher in the elementary system. The difference between the education system in Croatia versus North America is that students in Croatia have an excellent foundation in math and literacy skills. These skills are quite low for many students in Canada and every year it just gets worse. I can't even tell you how many students graduate grade 8 and still don't know their times tables! There are also many behavioural issues and sometimes verbal/physical aggression towards teachers (even in elementary schools). These behaviours are constant interruptions in the classroom that make it difficult to teach. The many different levels and abilities of students in one classroom also makes it difficult to run a good classroom program due to there being too many needs and just one teacher in the class. I just wanted to share my experience of the education system in North America for those who may not be familiar . . .

roglSimpson That is actually not true. I am still in high school and i can say it is not the best education in the world, but it deff isn't so bad as you say. American education is waaay worse, just look at internet. I also know that some girls from my high school went to live in USA and they were average here, but in USA they were top in their class. One girl ( who had better grades ) even knew more than her teacher. You are being too subjective. A lot of students in Croatia are far better in math, languages and talking skills than other countries. Take a look at younger people, most of them understand english and can have a good converstation.

For kids without skills is guilty school system. Teachers just do what they must to do by plan and program without better explanation. They can't recognise when student have dyslexia.

I'm telling you now why it is difficult to find a job in Croatia and why people are leaving the state because you have very low salaries in Croatia and what you earn in a company and that is what you do, and in this whole story are the biggest thieves in the country the politicians who are the most rewarding in this story and because of such people can not get the jobs of normal people in this country because they employ their people in a little stronger companies and these people have no idea of such jobs and have no idea what to do in such jobs, now you know why People are leaving the state out!!
