- Learn how to make a fitted bed sheet from a flat bed sheet with this tutorial.
Do you get tears or holes in your fitted sheets but the flat sheets are still usable? We do!
We had two sets of the same sheets and the fitted sheet ripped on both sets. To get more use out of these sheets, I converted one of the flat sheets into a fitted sheet and now the set can be used.
Converting a flat to a fitted sheet will work with any flat sheet and the sheet can be converted to a fitted sheet for the same size bed. I will mix and match different sheet sets together to get more use out of them.

Awesome! My brother just handed me two flat sheets he wants turned into fitted sheets for his motorhome bed. It's a custom size so it's not something he could by sheets for. Now I'm set.
Very cool!
Decades ago I learned a knot at each corner of a flat sheet draped over the matrass would make a fitted sheet without sewing! Simply lay a sheet smoothly and evenly over your mattress tie a know close to each lower corner of the mattress. Done. You can also tie knots at the bottom corners of the flat upper sheet. I leave the knots in when laundering.
Could you add a photo of how you do this knot? I wanted a flat sheet with a fitted bottom so that it doesn't come untucked so easily - I found a company that offers a top sheet "fitted" at the bottom. However, all the did was put some elastic on the bottom but they did not make the pocket that wraps around the mattress! so, it still come untucked. And they didn't adjust the length of the sheet, so I have an extra 18" or so at the top that gets in the way. Thank you, this is a great idea and I think it would solve my problem.
Kathryn, you could use the instructions for making the pockets from this video and only sew the elastic across the bottom and up the sides about 12" to make the type of sheet you are describing. Happy Sewing!
That's a brilliant idea
@@NeedlepointersI think that would be a great new video! ❤
I would love to see a pic also. I am a bad cutter and sewer

Such a talented person you are and you made it so easy. Respect 🙏
Thank you so much 😀 So glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you very much for your informative video. I had a sheet left unused. After watching the video and taking the necessary measurements, I sewed a new sheet, thereby saving on the purchase of a new sheet. Thank you very much for your work.

Good tutorial on sewing elastic and for measuring the sheet to the bed. I prefer the elastic only on the corners, would that change the measurements at all?
Thanks for watching our tutorial! It would only change the measurements of the elastic itself. You could sew the elastic only in the corners, but you would need to finish the rest of the sides.
Thank you!
Hi there, Thank you for this video, it was very informative. My question to you is, what kind of rotary cutter are you using here? It seems to cut with ease through the layers of fabric.
Thank you.
💞
Hi, thanks for watching! I have a Quilter's Select rotary cutter, but any rotary cutter with a sharp blade (ie, newish) will cut nicely like this!
Nice
Thanks
Do you make them for others if we paid this is to complicated for me to do plus I have no sewing machine I need this for one of my daughter bed sheets this would make her so happy as the sheet that came with her bedding set she wanted the flat one as her fitted sheet it shoes more of the squishmallows
Hi Jessica! Thank you for your interest in our video. We do not sew items for people, I would suggest seeing if someone local to you can alter the sheet. Alternatively, if you search on Amazon for "flat sheet holder" you will find there are quite a few options for types of straps. One of these may work to hold the flat sheet around the bed.
Why add 3" to the corners? I am working on a fitted sheet and the thickness of my mattress is 6". Is the 3" for the underside of the mattress?
Hi, it's for the seam allowance when sewing the boxed corners and for it to wrap around the bottom of the mattress a bit. You can find more detailed instructions here: www.needlepointers.com/main/youtubecontent.aspx?youtubepageid=619. Happy Sewing!
Can you make a queen fitted sheet FROM a queen flat sheet ? Or in your experience it needs to be the next size up ?
I was able to make a fitted sheet from the same sized flat sheet but if you have a thick mattress it may not fit. You can just take the measurements to see if it will work.
In the tutorial you talk about the right side and the wrong side. If it’s just a solid sheet I just pick a side when starting the first corner right?
Usually the folded edge is folded to the wrong side of the fabric. But, you can certainly pick either side to be the "right" side when you start the corners.
@@Needlepointers so if you were still using it as a flat sheet, is the right side the one that touches your body?
@@MaryCat123 The right side is the side that faces up. The side seams will be folded to the wrong side of the fabric.
Shouldn't you use the zigzag stitch?
Hi! You sew a zig-zag stitch so that when the elastic is stretched the stitch line will not break. In this case, we are stretching the elastic (a lot) while sewing and there is no extra stretch in the fabric afterwards. So, the thread won't break. Thanks for watching and happy sewing!

Thank you for watching our video on making a fitted sheet from a flat sheet. If you have flat sheets, transform them into fitted. Happy sewing.
Why would u waste ur time undoing the seems just to cut it. Get a life
Hi! Sometimes the sheet is not big enough without picking out a seam. Otherwise, just cut it!
