Prado 150 | How much does it weigh!? | Modified for 4WD'ing/off-roading/touring | Need a GVM upgrade

  • Today we talk about the factory weights on this 2014 Prado 150 series and what modifications we’ve done that effect that weight.
    Finally we empty the Prado out completely and take it over to a registered weigh bridge to see just how much it actually weighs!
    This video hopes to show Prado 150 owners why they might need a GVM upgrade to their vehicle if modifying it for 4WD’ing and touring.

    Thanks for the video. In the USA it’s the Lexus GX 460. 4.6 liter V8 301 hp, 325 foot lbs of torque. Interesting to see the GVM is the same in Australia. I’ve removed the second and third row seats and replaced it with a drawer platform. Many upgrades on mine, front winch bumper full drivetrain bash plates, roof rack, recovery gear. This all comes in at 6600 lbs or 2933 kilos. We don’t have rated GVM upgrades in the USA but I have installed OME 600 lbs or 275 kilo constant load front and rear springs and Radflo shocks valved for the constant load. When loaded out with all our gear, fridge, dog, girlfriend etc I weigh in at 7200 lbs or 3260 kilos. 3” of suspension lift and running 275/75/17s.

      G'day Michael! Thanks for sharing. I've seen a few videos from the US with the GX 460, they look like the top spec model offered over here in Aus.
      It's amazing how quickly these vehicles fill up and just how heavy all that small compact gear totals when bundled together.
      Interesting to hear that the US don't have rated GVM upgrade kits. Are there laws of enforcement penalties for exceeding GVM listed weights, or is this something that isn't really worried about too much?

    Nice one Nathan, really not surprised about the weight, it's very easy to go over GVM when you get them ready for touring and some decent 4x4 kit on them.

      Shoey's Adventures Cheers mate 🤙 It is very easy indeed. I think we might be looking at a GVM upgrade in the future, packed up and towing we are just over.
      Too bad they don’t come out with higher payloads from factory (200 series included)

      XploringOz you can get the GVM upgrade post rego but not a GCM, I think it’s worth it for piece of mind and liability issues should you kill someone overloaded you could be at fault just because of that.

      Yeah, frustrating how you can only get GCM pre-rego, but fortunately GCM isn’t issue with the weight of the van this car tows 👍

      Thanks Darren. We didn’t take it over the weigh bridge again, but if the 200 is anything to go by, I’m looking at about 250kg of passengers and standard gear (not camping or towing).
      The Prado was weighed a while back when towing the van with a 180kg ball weight and it was a bit over GVM.

    rear axle max mass of 1800kg will be your fist limit you cross. REMEMBER the multiplier requited for the ball weight with a reach of 1220mm from the ball to the centre of the axle. 170kg ball adds 244KG to the rear axle !.

    Another great vid.. Thanks. My 150 is similar enough in terms of accessories/weight. Do you have any idea (or an educated guess) of what the weight split is front to back? I'm updating my suspension and their talking about +50 to 100 King springs on the front and +100 to 300 on the back. The front has a steel bullbar, D4D, typically takes the first/ bigger hit with bumps, carries the weight when braking... The rear has 150 litres of fuel. Their recommendation implies the weight distribution is something like 1/3 front, 2/3 rear. To me (limited Prado experience) I think the back will be firm and the front suspension will move more/do more work. It feels like it could be out of balance. I had this with OME on my last 4WD. So, any knowledge or guess of weight split? Thanks in advance.

      Hey mate, so it will depend heavily on how you plan on setting up the vehicle for trips and what gear or trailers you plan to tow, however you might be surprised about how much weight is up front.
      I don’t have the original receipt from the weighing of the Prado 150, so I can’t tell you exactly how much the split was, but the front is generally heavier than you think. For example on my completely empty 200 series (winch, bull bar and dual battery) it comes in at 1.8t and the rear only comes in at 1.3t. Keep in mind through the rear is where all the gear and trailer weight is stored.
      The Prado is likely to be similar and personally I would be inclined to go with the 50-100kg front springs as this will hold the bull bar weight and suit a winch or dual battery in the future.
      The rear suspension will be purely dependant on your setup. I’ve gone for the 400kg and air bags in my 200 series, however I plan on towing and carrying heavy loads and completing a GVM upgrade on this vehicle.

    I am surprised it is that heavy. My 120 GX is around 2.35, with my most of my gear in it, including alum bar, winch, plates, fridge+slide box, drifta kitchen basic tools ect, and some rubbish(weighed at the dump), I probably add another 150kg on a trip with the loose items, water, and Food. They must start a lot heavier. I like the 120 for that reason, shame it's getting too old to really consider.

      Yeah, it sure is surprising! It was the same with my 200 series Landcruiser, that was much worse again! These days the cars come with soo much included, there's not a whole lot they can do about the increasing weight. It's just too bad that they don't increase the GVM allowance to match.

      The 120 is 400kg lighter than the 150, payload if I recall is similar

      Hey mate, all the wiring in the engine bay was completed by Ultimate 4WD Equipment, Bibra Lake. They do some great electrical work there and create a secondary fuse block to house all the new equipment. Not sponsored or endorsed, but do recommend.

    When you do the suspension upgrade do you get ride of kdss or can it be retained??

      So in this case, this model is a GXL so it doesn't come with KDSS, however with the right kit, KDSS can be retained as per factory specifications. My 200 series has retained its KDSS with a 2" lift and GVM upgrade kit.

      Just confirming, are you referring to the Ford Raptor ranger? If so, I probably shouldn't comment as I have driven one of these before. The combinations of suspension setups for these vehicles is extensive though, I'm sure there would be a setup to suit your needs.

    Kerb Weight is with full tanks of fuel.
    Tare Weight is with only 10L of fuel.
    You can see this clearly on toyota specs that the models with only the one tank have a 60kg less kerb weight. So that's 50kg for the fuel and 10kg for the 63 litre tank.
    So looking at your original kerb weight you do not have to factor in the weight of fuel to your Payload.

    So you only have 330kgs of usable capacity ? Add luggage, people and caravan and you’ll be over easily unless you run 1/2 tanks of fuel. It’s a real pain as the gvm upgrade is expensive and only nets you another 150odd kgs of capacity.... and I can’t find anyone that does gvm Prado upgrading in Perth.

      Obg Max, Pedders do one: www.pedders.com.au/kits/gvm-upgrades/toyota/toyota-landcruiser-150/ that gives a 510kg improvement
      The WA rules changed a few months ago, so some of the local suspension shops stopped doing them for non-mining vehicles (I believe) due to the compliance costs for each type. Even then another consideration is whether the upgrade is federally approved or just WA, so if only the latter, no trips to Uluru...

      Yeah, it's not a great situation. As you could probably imagine, there would be a lot of people running around out there with over weight Prado's.
      Without a GVM upgrade, this car would be legally overweight. It you weren't up to the effort and cost of doing the upgrade, then it would be advisable to change vehicle if wanting to remain legal.
      The 200 series is not much better, but the GVM upgrade assists. Also the 200 series is a little more 'over engineered'.

      It had done about 80000kms during this video. About 105000 now.
