See how to add a new sky behind trees with Photoshop Elements.
It can be tricky to add a new sky in between all the small leaves and branches of a tree. Follow along as I create a mask to get around this problem.

Rick, nice job! This is always a problem, thanks for going through the whole process. I think your example was a great test subject, a very hard to select picture, you got around this without no magic wand or anything!!!!! Great job buddy, thanks for sharing!

Great job illustrating and explaining this technique. This looks like it could be a "work around"/alternate technique for the refine edge tool.

    • @EssentialPSElements
      @EssentialPSElements  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Good observation. I did explore using the Refine Edge tool but there were too many "inside" areas for it to work well.

I tried this technique with a photo I just shot during the winter. There is no green leaves, only brown tree trunks. I could not get the color chanels to work since there is not a brown option. The limbs became blown out enough that the blend mode of Darker Color just didn't help. But I do appreciate the ability to do this during the rest of the year.

WOW!!! Thanks for doing this for me. There sure are a lot of steps but the end result is great! And, as MrMoonpie001 said, you don't have to use the Magic Wand, which would be next to impossible in this case.
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. As always, your videos are really helpful and well explained.
    Take care.

This is an excellent tutorial for replacing a background. I have always wanted to do this, but every time I tried removing the background with the selection the result looked awful. I will be using this technique from now on. I always learn something useful from your videos. Thank you.

very interesting but complicated. It will take a number of tries to get this technique down. Thanks.
I was never able to reproduce it. I got lost about 2/3 of the way through.

This was a great tutorial in that you told all the steps, but I would like to know why you are doing the steps. Like why did you use black in some areas vs. the white for the masking? Overall however, this is a pretty good tutorial.

Rick, Great tutorial love the detail. Three quick questions if I may. I have photo taken in the fall leaves are redish or orangish where you pick green color and change to that should I be trying to find a color to replace the green closer to red / orange in my photo ? In the written description where u copy and paste into black and white layer into Layer mask for layer 2 should the shortcut read Control V instead of Control C ? In beginning of Video you indicate changes needed for PS 9 and 10 , I'm running PS10 i can get all the way to Step Three, but from there on I just can't get it done. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Best Regards

Could this also be used to isolate line drawings? I have scanned drawings that I would like to have the white background replaced with a transparent layer.

    Hi Rick,
I managed to add a black background behind a plant, by following your instructions. Ideally, I would like to know exactly what each step does and how you arrived at it. However, my effort worked almost 100%, except that I could not remove the white hallo around the green leaves, although I tried your receipe (blending with dark or darker color). Can I send you the image by email?

Hi Hunter I purchased your Seamless sky replacement action for Photoshop, but it doesn't look like what you show in your video; I don't see the 'sky replacement workflow option' anywhere.

@@EssentialPSElements A written version would be great Rick, as I cannot get this right even though I followed your instruction to the letter. Some of the layers do not appear in the layers panel as I follow you along. (I'm using PE9 and PE14) Thanks for all the tips available. You are by far the most interesting tutor on line. Easy to follow and nothing left out in your presentation. Clearly and softly spoken as well. :) Jim
