Such a beautiful human being. It's always a pleasure to listen to Professor Pinker. He always brightens the mood.
I love to watch Steven's face as people throw compliments at him.
Steve’s always great, but Sally did a great job on this interview. One of the best I’ve seen. Concise, intelligent and not overly concerned with being politically correct with every statement you say.
Steven Pinker has renewed my hope for humanity. When I become frustrated with human stupidity and pettiness I think about his brilliance. The Better Angeles of Our Nature has given me an optimistic view on the course of civilization that soothes my soul (puts my mind at ease).
That "short manifesto" he mentions near the end turned out pretty well.
This was wonderfully thoughtful and inspiring. Thanks very much, Steven Pinker, Sally Satel, APS, film crew, and all who helped bring it together. Bravo!

What a thoughtful, serene, lucid, enlightened man! He's almost like an alien or a robot from the future sent to teach us....and then one finds out that he's an atheist, and you think, well yes, what else could he be? What is religion for, again? What does religion give you that Pinker doesn't already have? This calm, content, peaceful man.

Sorry, I can't help posting this here. The "Süddeutsche Zeitung" is a relatively popular news magazine in Germany. A few years back they had an article about him, the _"star intellectual"_ - lmao!

Got me excited for nothing
He is a good empiricist and Darwinist but like most empiricists today he does not understand consciousness as most scientists, philosophers or psychologists do not, it being described as The Hard Problem. Like most empiricists he is an atheist and approaches reality from that perspective.
Until consciousness is understood we are in the dark and most worldviews are assumptions leading from a bottom up view of life and reality rather than a top down perspective. Sanskrit is the oldest language and most languages are based.on it. Its alphabet is based on actual sounds so it is not an invention but is a given. Prof. Pinker is likely not aware of that. With an understanding of consciousness the human mind as a blank slate would never be up for discussion, as it would be seen as obviously flawed and unrealistic.

Not really. The results are determined, only the measurement makes it appear to be random.
It's random to the extent that it can't be pre-determined. It's like the weather - over your head.
All of chaos theory is predicated on the random nature of reality.
I believe he is talking about the seemingly random nature of human psychology...not of nature, biology, or physics.
