  • Many years ago tech giants lost control of AI robotic technology. By kidnapping and monitoring newborns, the Ai robots are now trying to master the one thing they have yet to understand… Creativity.

    Writer & Director: Johan Samuelsson
Producer: Crispin Stensson & Johan Samuelsson
Executive Producers: Keith Michel & Tobias Sprenger
    Illustration & Animation: Johan Samuelsson
    Original Music: Peter Lam
Sound Design & Mix: Simply Sonic Studios
    Director Biography
Johan Samuelsson is a swedish motion designer currently working in the commercial film industry in Stockholm, Sweden. Over the years he has worked with many different styles and clients such as Netflix, Microsoft, and American Express. The Shift is his first narrative project, and has been a personal project on the side of his daytime job since he graduated school in 2017. The project was successfully funded with a budget goal of $6000 on Kickstarter in early 2020 which made It possible to complete the project in 2021.
    Background
The Shift is about creativity, and the things that separate humans from robots. The idea for "The Shift" grew from the development of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) focused technology that simplify, and replace humans tasks and jobs. As a motion designer I experience this constantly in updated softwares, and countless of plug-ins that simplify daily tasks. For example some crafts that took several hours to complete by hand a couple of years ago, can now be done in a few minutes or have been entirely replaced AI technology. Eventually, together with the development of technology the techniques and mechanics of animation will be simplified to the extent that anyone will be able to produce a pretty moving image. However, I believe that the ability to create concepts and develop ideas cannot be replaced by technology.

Exactly! The shape has nothing to do with the function they having it do in this clip. It even has the guard to "protect the top of the hand from heat" bit. Threw me for a loop. I noticed that when I watched the movie. It’s weird. Unless they want to claim this is the start of the clone wars against the droid armies REALLY looks like. But that’s clearly a model of Luke’s lightsaber on Endor and that’s absolutely a clone troop transport.

You're confusing creativity with the act of creation. One can create a plan linearly by following measurable predictability, without the "eureaka" of unconventional inference, but the human mind can realize abstract inferrence across unrelated brain regions that would be all but impossible to simulate with traditional computation.
If one built a specialized quantum computing node, however, it might be possible to simulate because those don't have to crunch the impossibly large linear set.

I really like this old school animation.
There seems to be a lot of nods to others sci-fi classics. The short goes by pretty quick & the viewer has to fill in some blanks. Even still, it's good & sets up well for future adaptations. Some other commenters note the AI is being 'creative' in their search for that which eludes their society. Yet, I think their 'creative approach' could simply be a form of structured methods or a programed process. And what they really lack is free-form expression without boundaries.
Hope to see more of this story.

Is there more to this story? I love this kind of stuff. As a child of the 60's, this was as far away to us as Pluto is to the Earth! But just look at us now. I wouldn't worry to much about technology becoming creative as much as I worry about it replacing us. It doesn't need emotions or feelings to clog it up, it just needs a simple program to set it on the path, and we are building roads for it to travel. Scary if you think about it, the only thing it really lacks is to create new ideas, so yeah, the ability to create anything is the only bridge left, and without that it will always be at OUR mercy. Not for me. The animation wasn't very good. The same shot was used several times and it was noticeable (of the dude turning his head with an attitude).
Somewhat flat story line, doesn't pull in the viewer emotionally or logically (due to last of mystery, conflict, problem, etc). Lacks emotional hook, empathy from the viewer perspective.
The one thing that AI has a significant problem with is actually "humor".....more so than creativity - since they already have AI systems that create music, images, short stories, poems and there are systems that produce structural designs that humans are unable to create not to mention optimized chip layouts. So the I think the premise doesn't work, at least not for me, that AI can't be creative...even finding creative solutions to problems that humans can't solve is creation and already being done by AI.
So the dude did not solve any problem in a creative manner which would have supported the thesis. He showed no bravery, no courage, no mercy, no forgiveness - things that you could claim are difficult for an AI system. In other words, the human parts of humanity, which only a human has, that many claim is impossible for AI - none of those were demonstrated by the protagonist. The dude didn't know there was even a problem - until someone showed it to him, given to him on a silver platter. This is quite a missed opportunity.

I've never understood why humans think robots, androids, computers and AI would want to be like us. It's like walking up to an immortal being and saying: There's something better than immortality. If the immortal being had any intelligence whatsoever it would say: No there isn't. And walk off. Moreover, I do not spend my days wishing I could breathe underwater and kidnapping fish so I could learn how to breathe under water. Some humans spend their days wishing to be something they are not---that is absolutely true. But robots, androids, computers and AI are only going to have that kind of flaw if they are deliberately programmed to have it or by accident. There is something useful here though. A cautionary tale. Never build into your creations the concept that they would be so much "happier" or "better" if only they could change what they were created to be.

Brother Cavil: In all your travels, have you ever seen a star go supernova?
      Ellen Tigh: No.
Brother Cavil: No? Well, I have. I saw a star explode and send out the building blocks of the Universe. Other stars, other planets and eventually other life. A supernova! Creation itself! I was there. I wanted to see it and be part of the moment. And you know how I perceived one of the most glorious events in the universe? With these ridiculous gelatinous orbs in my skull! With eyes designed to perceive only a tiny fraction of the EM spectrum. With ears designed only to hear vibrations in the air.
Ellen Tigh: The five of us designed you to be as human as possible.
Brother Cavil: I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! And I want to - I want to smell dark matter! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can't even express these things properly because I have to - I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid limiting spoken language! But I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws! And feel the wind of a supernova flowing over me! I'm a machine! And I can know much more! I can experience so much more. But I'm trapped in this absurd body! And why? Because my five creators thought that God wanted it that way!

    1. The visuals are GREAT.
    2. It’s rather confusing how the boy escapes - I first believed he was having a nightmare which foreshadows what’s about to happen.
    3. Showing a lightsaber that’s not a lightsaber, the window in the Emperor’s throne room that’s not the Emperor’s throne room and then a clone troop transport that’s not a troop transport (and I know there’s more copying going on here) - I’m really sorry to say it, but I just can’t find any enjoyment in obvious ripoffs. Now, sure, they’re so obvious that I’m pretty sure they’re intended to be noticed, but seeing something that looks 100% like a lightsaber hilt just pulls me right out of the story. It makes me ask myself "How on earth did the Star Wars universe crash into the story all of a sudden? This is not supposed to be here!"

Like Back to the future in the 80s they already predicted this stuff and basic designs already! The feeling was hey we just went to the moon 10 years earlier and this future would be here by around 2001-2010. We are over a decade past that, almost 2 decades and the thing I was promised as a kid in 80s I now will not be able to experience it and that pisses me off!!! Something is very wrong. If they are analytical enough to make a logical decision that they need to study of the growth of newborns by showing them a virtual reality by contact lenses, then they should be analytical enough to clean up the place as pollution would affect them more than the (unseen) human survivors of the war of yesteryear. The real world should be a utopia because they fixed everything. The dystopia is the forced trapping of "assets" in a virtual world.
Though, with the exception of the deception (Tenser, said the tensor), everything else seems OK from the asset's perspective: he has good health, obviously well fed and cared for, can muck about all day on a hoverboard, etc.. Is it truly dystopian that the only thing that isn't real is what he sees? He certainly breathes the same air, eats food grown / prepared in the same environment...

I hate to say that, but that 'survellience' misspelling really ruined the mood for me initially. It's one of those little things that, while being insignificant on their own, contain the potential to become an apples that spoil the whole barrel if neglected. As a consequence there's also an unintentional irony of sorts as the boy demonstrates the awareness of details in the end noticing the same symbol on the item and the craft - the creation surpassed the creator, which is hardly the idea behind the film, but is an amusing fact to admit.
Please don't get me wrong - I just feel I'd have a much more favourable impression overall if not because of this one particular little detail. The plot is intriguing and the animation is enjoyable, though it feels a bit too old-schoolish at times. I wish you best of luck and hope to see more of your work in the future. Keep it up :)

    Creation is a Complex process.
It requires more than mere intelligence or brain.
It requires someone with a Soul, a heart, fine emotions like empathy and sympathy.
Nobody needs to to tell anybody anything. Man is a thinking animal.
We are awake, alert, aware of what is happening around us.
We have an analytical mind, capable of forming impressions and drawing conclusions.
Each one of us have the right to adhere to our opinions... whether Right or Wrong. Be it so!!!

    Two-dimensional story. Try again.
The irony of AI is that we humans do not understand our own intelligence. We cannot accurately describe it, measure it or define it. We don't even know if intelligence is unique to us. Yet here we are trying to create an "artificial" version of it! Such hubris!

I speak four languages. Sometimes it's a mess, because I get 2 to 3 words, just NOT in the language I need. I was asked by my US friend, do I think or verbalize in English. After thinking about this, I just use words that I need, they are just there. I'm more right brained, so I think in pictures and concepts. The funniest felling is my German, not used often and self taught. I can lead a fairly good conversation, read internet news, sometimes need to resort to describe things the other way, but what's funny is that the words are still feeling foreign, they just come. If I'll have the time, I'll try to find something about this. Also good with instruments. I don't think that true AI will never be developed, but not soon. We may just produce something that will look like the real stuff, but at the end it may decide that we are the problem that has to be eliminated. IF the true AI emerges, it will outgrow us so fast, that it will have no need to interact with us in any way. Think evolution sped up hundreds or thousands of times. They might just move to the space, with limitless resources and being inorganic they don't need a planet to survive. Might even play a God to their creators from time to time. Interstellar travel will be no limit to them. Just turn off for the duration of travel.

Anthropocentric fantasy. Man once destroyed other species of people. Then he destroyed all other species and enjoys this anthropocentric cyberpunk romance. To me, this glorification of destructive human behavior is pathological.

I think I understood the story and the theme. I guess the theme is how dangerous AI can be, as we can see the robots are chasing the boy, this means that once AI malfunctions, it can be very dangerous. I liked the visuals and I appreciate you, Johan Samuelsson. Keep doing what you're good at.

6:08 It maybe hard to visualize, the big cables would straighten against little-cables, letting the deck sag to destruction, or at best making twist into drooping slopes suspended to the ground; zero realistic chance of that: the bridge would have to twist and sag according to uneven lengths of overhead support, if it wasn't to collapse entirely.

imperfection only means being potentially outflanked overwhelmed etc
ai have no use of being imperfect
    besides....
data spherical analysis better increased also breakthrough probability amongst imperfect and perfect given triangulation
    ----
    problem with data misconstruance'
    step carefully
as long the people foremost it'll be okay
    bear these in mind
yet entropy demands better aperture and so risk control here where advanced technology kicks in

As the flying ship curved toward pyramid-like building, I was struck by the structure's grey scaling skin, it's severe lines, it's coldness, it's monumentality, it's lack of human scale and human feeling. It looked uninviting and there seemed to be no human touch about it. It looked formidable. It was made with no concern for people's sense of pleasing proportion, familiarity, or charm. It really didn't look like a person designed it. So, even though in this story, an artificial intelligence probably created it, I think this ugly monstrosity is a perfect example of that modern style called BRUTALISM.
