Director Biography
Johan Samuelsson is a swedish motion designer currently working in the commercial film industry in Stockholm, Sweden. Over the years he has worked with many different styles and clients such as Netflix, Microsoft, and American Express. The Shift is his first narrative project, and has been a personal project on the side of his daytime job since he graduated school in 2017. The project was successfully funded with a budget goal of $6000 on Kickstarter in early 2020 which made It possible to complete the project in 2021.
Background
The Shift is about creativity, and the things that separate humans from robots. The idea for "The Shift" grew from the development of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) focused technology that simplify, and replace humans tasks and jobs. As a motion designer I experience this constantly in updated softwares, and countless of plug-ins that simplify daily tasks. For example some crafts that took several hours to complete by hand a couple of years ago, can now be done in a few minutes or have been entirely replaced AI technology. Eventually, together with the development of technology the techniques and mechanics of animation will be simplified to the extent that anyone will be able to produce a pretty moving image. However, I believe that the ability to create concepts and develop ideas cannot be replaced by technology.

Anthropocentric fantasy. Man once destroyed other species of people. Then he destroyed all other species and enjoys this anthropocentric cyberpunk romance. To me, this glorification of destructive human behavior is pathological.
WTF!!! I WAS RAISED BY ALIEN ROBOTS TOO !!!
why are all of these shorts 'award winning?'
Sweeeeet
I think I understood the story and the theme. I guess the theme is how dangerous AI can be, as we can see the robots are chasing the boy, this means that once AI malfunctions, it can be very dangerous. I liked the visuals and I appreciate you, Johan Samuelsson. Keep doing what you're good at.
Great
Who????😢😮😂❤
Crazy ❤❤❤
kid def watched star wars
mos def.
A.I. is ready to replace our corrupt and broken judicial system...
*laughs in midjourney*
Midjourney is the perfect example to support the idea of this movie :)
6:08 It maybe hard to visualize, the big cables would straighten against little-cables, letting the deck sag to destruction, or at best making twist into drooping slopes suspended to the ground; zero realistic chance of that: the bridge would have to twist and sag according to uneven lengths of overhead support, if it wasn't to collapse entirely.
That's unrealistic for a reason beyond sci-fi: newborns secluded from a relatable caregiver with human facial expressions would likely let themselves die, or develop severe psychosis. Beautiful animation though!
Nice to see that Republic Gunships survived the end of the world.
Thougtfully imaginative explanation of our disabled presentation here.
Cool thanks for all your effort and time to make this
Is this old? We've just learned lately that "creativity" is very easy for AI. Still no sentience, but lots of creativity.
I don't do cartoons
Interesting animation. Too bad the story makes no sense at all.
I've never understood why humans think robots, androids, computers and AI would want to be like us. It's like walking up to an immortal being and saying: There's something better than immortality. If the immortal being had any intelligence whatsoever it would say: No there isn't. And walk off. Moreover, I do not spend my days wishing I could breathe underwater and kidnapping fish so I could learn how to breathe under water. Some humans spend their days wishing to be something they are not---that is absolutely true. But robots, androids, computers and AI are only going to have that kind of flaw if they are deliberately programmed to have it or by accident. There is something useful here though. A cautionary tale. Never build into your creations the concept that they would be so much "happier" or "better" if only they could change what they were created to be.
Brother Cavil: In all your travels, have you ever seen a star go supernova? Ellen Tigh: No. Brother Cavil: No? Well, I have. I saw a star explode and send out the building blocks of the Universe. Other stars, other planets and eventually other life. A supernova! Creation itself! I was there. I wanted to see it and be part of the moment. And you know how I perceived one of the most glorious events in the universe? With these ridiculous gelatinous orbs in my skull! With eyes designed to perceive only a tiny fraction of the EM spectrum. With ears designed only to hear vibrations in the air. Ellen Tigh: The five of us designed you to be as human as possible. Brother Cavil: I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! And I want to - I want to smell dark matter! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I can't even express these things properly because I have to - I have to conceptualize complex ideas in this stupid limiting spoken language! But I know I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws! And feel the wind of a supernova flowing over me! I'm a machine! And I can know much more! I can experience so much more. But I'm trapped in this absurd body! And why? Because my five creators thought that God wanted it that way! 0
We will have Droid armies, count on it
Funny it was San Francisco, I can believe it
There were several pretty blatant copies of Star Wars designs here, such as that LAAT gunship... XD
boring as f****
Anyone who thinks AI will take over the world hasn't had to deal with an automated phone system or an automated grocery store checkout system. They're spastic clumsy and can't react to off-script situations. Even the self-driving cars are a joke, except maybe the Russians could use them since Russians have no clue how to drive.
Ai isn’t the threat, it’s us
creativity is not a mystery. most likely more intelligent mind will be more creative too. we have no chance. Heil Robots!
Honestly his dream life wasn't that bad, I would have loved to live there lol Incredible work overall
Thank you 🙏
Или я так глупа? О чем этот фильм? Ничего не понятно.
Why would an AI be interested in creativity? Creativity favors fashion over function most of the time and I can't see an AI doing that. Nice film but the concept isn't favorable.
Nobody’s gonna mention how they ripped off lightsabers and laati gunships?
Entendi foi nada
Too confusing to be engaging. Did not make me care or be curious.
SXorry - so slow and uninteresting I can’t even get through it.
Real hoverboard just like in back to the future. We were supposed to have these already! Flying cars! Outposts on the moon and Mars. I don't what stopped true progression to the future! Like Back to the future in the 80s they already predicted this stuff and basic designs already! The feeling was hey we just went to the moon 10 years earlier and this future would be here by around 2001-2010. We are over a decade past that, almost 2 decades and the thing I was promised as a kid in 80s I now will not be able to experience it and that pisses me off!!! Something is very wrong. Sorry great movie though! Well done.
This is the golden gate bridge but there's no way San Francisco has geography like that at that angle.
Why would AI have visual displays for themselves? You don't send a picture to another phone by holding up it in front of its camera.
The fades and transitions in this are seamless. Absolutely gorgeous piece of work. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Loved it
Glad you liked it 🙏
Nice quiet animat
AI out of control, and trying to understand what it means to be human. What an innovative concept.
Not great, other than the animation, the story is basic
thank - you
This whetted my appetite for the story to see what happens next. Loved the music and sound design. Good job all 'round!
Thank you! 🙏
The way he kept looking over he’s shoulder squinting the same way got me
the animation is beautiful , very HEAVY METAL, the magazine, not the movie . truly an old school look that this old stoner truly appreciates .
Extraordinary, good movie, great idea.
Creation is a Complex process. It requires more than mere intelligence or brain. It requires someone with a Soul, a heart, fine emotions like empathy and sympathy. Nobody needs to to tell anybody anything. Man is a thinking animal. We are awake, alert, aware of what is happening around us. We have an analytical mind, capable of forming impressions and drawing conclusions. Each one of us have the right to adhere to our opinions... whether Right or Wrong. Be it so!!!
Extraordinary, good movie, great idea
God is attributed with three tasks... Creation, Maintenance and Destruction. AI may be able to maintain and can definitely destroy what has been already created, but creation of anything New is not within its power.
Good
Creativity is nothing more than, "What if."
Extraordinary, good movie, great idea
