    Can relate to living out and feeding a family! We live 35 miles from any grocery store, 100 miles from a Walmart and 200 miles from a COSTCO. I have a suggestion--date your buckets with the Ball washable labels. Always use the entire bucket before restocking. At the least, remove old contents to a large container, add new and return the older stock to top for first consumption. First in, first out. There are also 4 gal. food grade buckets which are square. They store in a tighter, less wasteful space in your pantry. After raising my large family, 10 children, I have a lot of experience in prepping and cooking. I am now near 70, and love to see young families living and learning. I hope this helps. New to your channel. Good luck and God bless. 😊☀️
    P.S. Your refrigerator door looks like it can be reversed. If it can, you will find that opening it inward not into your door will be a lot handier. ❤

    We grew up using plastic buckets to store bulk dry goods. You can actually store some foods in them for a few years if you use dry ice to push out the air before sealing them. We have a few buckets in the garage with oats, flour, sugar, and rice. Maybe for the bottom row you could do longer term food storage.

    Love the de-influencing ❤
    Two things- those lids break if you stack buckets on top of them so don’t do that! I broke 12 before i learned that. Second I’m one of those that those FIFO can rolling things are my favorite! I have 10 of the smaller shelf style ones you had and i have two of the big ones that are stand-alone meant for food storage and the bottom holds our number 10 cans. The key for me is have my recipes/meals stream lined to use what they hold in the amounts they hold. I LOVE being able to just count how many of each variety of can i need to pick up to refill the spaces and just buy them and reload and i know i have everything fully restocked and nothing going bad.

    Canned Goods Storage:
    I used to work in a Kroger-affiliate bakery. We would order in individual-size pastries (tarts, eclairs, etc), which we would individually-package for public sale.
    I brought home many of the boxes these were delivered in. Not all were clean, but I would snag the clean ones and bring them home. They were only about 2-3 inches high, with hinged lids.
    I store my canned items laying flat in these boxes. One box is all chicken noodle soup, another all tomato soup, another kidney beans, another Classico pasta sauce, etc. Sorted by food item, I can mark on the box edge what is in them and the boxes can be stacked on shelves. Leave space for two or more boxes at the top of the stack, and you can pull out the box/content you need.

    I agree with you about the lid rings. They are so difficult to put on. I had my husband help too 😂 but I love those lids because once that ring is on, it is so much nicer to use! As for the flour, I only buy a couple 5 lb bags of it & store the one I’m using in a glass gallon jar on my hutch & then the rest in my cabinet. I buy bulk wheat berries instead of bulk flour because the berries can last many many years, but flour goes bad within a couple years. I always keep a couple bags of flour on hand though, and I freeze my flour for a day before I store it so I don’t get bugs in it. I store my wheat berries in the 5 gallon buckets, and I have 1 glass gallon jar full in my kitchen for immediate use. When I need to use them I grind them into fresh flour for my sourdough or anything else I need it for. My grain mill was an investment but it has been so worth it. ❤

    You might benefit from a trash can or two in your pantry / laundry room, depending on how recyclables are sorted in your area :) That way there is a quick and easy way for you and your family to get rid of empty packaging on a day to day basis.

    • @NatalieBennett
      @NatalieBennett  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Or right outside the door that leads to the outside so they can quickly toss packaging.

    • @Conval-wi5eh
      @Conval-wi5eh ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jennyeddins7809 Having trash cans right outside the back door might be too far away, especially for the kids. I definitely wouldn't want to open an outside door to throw away some packages on a Saturday morning while standing in the pantry barefoot in my pyjamas on a cold snowy winter day.
      The ultimate goal here is relief for Natalie in the form of a pantry that stays organized longer and is less overwhelming when it's finally time to get it tidy. These huge bulky packagings can be overwhelming because our brain registers them as big items and lets the job to take care of the pantry appear bigger than it actually is.
      Having the trash cans right where the food is stored makes throwing the packaging away as easy as tossing it back on the shelves. Even if something isn't thrown away immediately, it can be done any time someone is popping in there to get a snack and realizes there is trash. It falls into the category "store it where you use it". Every place where trash is created regularly should have a trash can (or more, depending on the type of trash that is usually created there and your local waste system).
      Trash cans for your pantry don't have to be fancy, a huge cardboard box for cardboard packaging and a trash can for plastics or even just a trash bag that is hung up on a wall will do the job.
      We have trash cans in several rooms of our home, even though we live in an appartment. I highly recommend it, it makes tidying so much easier! They minimize the redundant part of throwing stuff away that should have been thrown away immediately and just stayed there because someone was to lazy to carry the item to a different room.
      The only challenge Natalie might face is to integrate the trash cans in a way that packaging can be thrown away while standing in front of the shelves while simultaneous making sure that food cannot fall from the shelves into the trash cans. But as she plans to redo the room, I am pretty sure she will come up with a great solution for her and her family :)

    Honey does crystallized, and it is very heavy. My recommendation is to get a food safe 5-gallon water jug. You can get some that are more square, and you can get a spigot that is good for more viscous liquids like honey. I got one over 2 years ago, and frankly even with our family of five we have not finished it off yet. It has crystallized, and my current plan is to leave it in the car during the summer and add a little more water at that point.

    I love the realistic pantry declutter! I use bins for storing bulk spices that I decant into easy to use jars, and to store less frequently used items. I've also put lazy susans at the corners of my pantry shelves for my oils, vinegars, sauces, etc. I have the problem where if I can't see it, I forget it's there, which means I lose things at the back of my pantry and it goes bad. The lazy susans and clear containers help me see what I have so much better and we waste so much less food!

    Your buckets are awesome! You should look into Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers for storing more Rice, beans, flour etc. also DE (diatomaceous earth) to put in the back up foods like these if you are going to be storing them for years. I think your labels are perfect! Your whole pantry looks amazing now. Do you have a basement to store more?

    A similar can organizer has worked for me, I have 2 side by side, and I use Dollar Tree cutting boards to line the wire shelving so that everything is stable. I despise the wire shelving and would change that if I could. I don't believe everything requires a bin and it does depend on how you access things. Bins and baskets can be helpful some times and also a hinderance if you over do it. Love the video.

    I decant very little. The original package has the expiration date on it and often cooking times and a useful recipe idea. As long as I can reseal it effectively and access the contents easily I just leave it in whatever it came in. How pretty it looks (or not) really doesn’t matter to me because it’s all in cupboards with doors on, not open shelves. I keep a notepad inside the cupboard door to write a list when I use up the last of something or move onto the last pack.

Nothing crazy but just a regular family getting organised.

    I actually do use can organizers with success. There are 3 things I buy by the flat, Coconut milk, pumpkin puree, and olives. Each one gets its own rack, and it is a good solution for an awkward floor space in my pantry closet that isn't easily accessible otherwise.

    Hey Natalie! Welcome to the bucket organization! We love it around here. Just wanted to make a suggestion on your “honey bucket”, we buy honey by the gallon from some friends of ours here locally.. and I will suggest you to get yourself a gallon glass jar. I wish I could send you a picture of what I am talking about but I’m sure you probably know what I am talking about. Sometimes you can get some good apple juice in those kind of jars or bottle (not sure what to call it) but it is so much easier to pour into whatever we want it on. Less mess, and if it gets hard, you know how honey can crystallize, we can just put the glass jar in hot water not having to worry about toxins bleaching. I found my gallon jar at a thrift shop.
    Btw, love your videos! Your home decor! Wish I could meet you in person one day! Blessings to you and your family! Happy spring! 🙋🏻‍♀️

    I found you tru the pantry organization in 2020 I didn’t even have a pantry and when my husky saw your pantry he said. Im going to bile you one and now I have a pantry that I love is not Pinterest worthy but I love it. And I use the same bickers and lids and I use glass jars to kept the food fresh and I label everything with tape that way I can wash it and used for something also. I don’t recommend to wri on the bickers or the lids because that especial items can tun out and you can used for something also and you can wash them and live that Sistem because is so chip. I did order labels but they did not work because they are not washable.

    Hi! I know I'm late to commenting, but I usually save your videos for the weekends :)
    About the stacked buckets idea: Just keep in mind that they might become less accessible that way. If you have double the buckets of each item, you might not need to get to the bottom one, but for the top one you need even more space on top to get into the bin or have to pull the whole stack towards you. That might be even more annoying^^
    But I guess you have to try it out and see what works for you :)

    We are about to start day 2 of spring cleaning in our house. This was just the motivation I needed to get back on the ball after a looooong day yesterday. Thank you! Our laundry room doubles as storage for everything home maintenance related (light bulbs, extra paint, tools, cleaning supplies, etc) as well as being the main entry point of our home. It can be so frustrating when it gets to be a big mess (80% of the time) , and I’m struggling to find a system that keeps that from happening.

    ☀️ I got SO EXCITED when you pulled out the 5-gallon buckets with the spinning gamma lids!! They are game-changers! I keep All-purpose Flour, Bread Flour, Jasmine Rice, California calrose rice, Brown Rice, Salt, Sugar, Roll Oats, and Pinto Beans in my buckets. I have mini ones too that I keep loose dried pasta (eg. Penne noodles) in. Like you, we have been stocking our “emergency/ homestead pantry” over the years. I bought my buckets over 8 years ago and only had a couple to start with! I had to laugh about Weston coming in and doing the bin lids, because that’s EXACTLY what happened with me and my husband. 🤪
    I actually do use a can roller and have used it for over a decade! In fact I bought a second one several years ago! You have to dedicate only ONE kind of item per slot. For instance, I think I have 8 slots on mine now. Each one only carries a single kind of item: canned Tomato sauce, then next to it is Diced Tomatoes 🍅, then next to that is Black Beans 🫘, then Refried Beans has its own slot, and so forth. No mixing and matching into the slots or the cans that don’t match get lost forever. I keep Coconut Milk, Kidney Beans, Great Northern Beans (for white chilis), canned Triple Beans, Canned Corn, etc. but each has their own slot. That’s the only way to store it really, is to use it for what you go through the most.
    Edit: I USED to keep canned “Cream Of’s” but the glutamates really affect me as well! And my children. I am able to use some Organic “Cream of Celery” and gluten-free “Cream of Chicken” and those have really help. They are more expensive so it’s harder for me to stock up, but they are so much better for my health, during the occasional times I use them for recipes. ❤

    we make a grocery list but aren't always the best about sticking just to the list, as we see something we need but forgot to put on. we know our general meat choices and so we are really good about sticking to those things, we buy more when the price is good, and settle for just enough when it's not. but as far as planning a meal plan, we are not good about that, I think i am the only person who could make that work, but it's a lot of work with a family of 5.

A year ago we put them side by side and it never fails, they are covered in stuff that needs to go out to our storage barn. Drives me nuts. But we're getting ready to buy a new set that will be heavier duty, my husband is a contractor with very dirty clothes, and so they will be top loading. I don't know what I'm going to do about it. Lol. Worse is that our laundry/ mud room is the main entrance to the house thanks to how our house was built and how the driveway is set up. Everyone sees the messiest room in our house

    Hey! Check out Azure Standard. They are a food co op for mainly organic and bulk foods (not exclusively). You should have a drop point in your area they are local to Oregon but deliver all over the us.

    Enjoy seeing more of your personality come out, not that you were faking or hiding at all just that you’re leaving it in the videos more i.e (adhd is so fun 🎶😂) also love the idea of function over fancy and using what you have for now, great video!

    I really appreciate your function over fancy motto here. I too feel that I’m just not a basket/container decanter. I do love the look and I use them for the highest shelves for disposable products and my cake decorating supplies that I don’t access regularly but has a lot of different pieces. But for things like foods I often forget about it and it expires. I love to just do a quick glance and grab and putting it away is much faster and I need efficiency in my life. I also used to do groceries without a plan and I felt like we’d come home sometimes with random ingredients and it was like a jumble puzzle trying to find things that actually worked together. Meal planning with a grocery list has really cut down on that.

    Chocolate chips in the freezer perhaps? That's where we've always kept ours.
    Lazy Susan cabinets used to drive me crazy too.
    Just curious, is it less stressful for you to have such a large amount of dry goods rather than say, just buying flour, sugar, oats one at a time?
    No guilt, no pressure, I'm praying for you to feel well today 🙏 ♥️

    I just took a food senstivity test and what came up as highly sensitive was...egg whites! I immediately thought of you, and I love that you show interesting alternates--like the Red Mill Egg Replacer!! Didn't know that existed, so I'll definitely be buying some of that. Appreciate that content now so much!

      I’m a few years into cooking egg-free, and I initially couldn’t use the powdered egg replacers because they usually contain potato starch. I found two things that helped: 1) Liquid vegan egg replacers (carried in the refrigerated vegan or egg section several of my grocery stores now); and 2) Recipes from Mommy’s Home Cooking blog - she developed recipes that don’t need an egg replacer product. I love her cornbread, but need to tweak her banana bread recipe for my GF flour. Her sugar cookies were good too.

    Nice pantry fix...looking so much better. I got two of those buckets during the pandemic, they were hard to find and hard to close. You can also add to your pantry Carnation dried milk since the grocery stores are far from you-just a thought.

    It looks great and fancy bins are not budget friendly for a prepper pantry. I have the buckets like you have and I Love the Gamma lids. I however do put thing's in glass jars like Pasta and beans. Nothing fancy just wide mouth half gallon ball jars.

    Not to poo poo on your plans of a stacked washer/dryer but as a fellow short lady who had a stacked combo in an old apartment, I found it to be really difficult to truly reach without a step stool and that just felt like a big old pain in the butt. They’re great space savers but being short makes it a lot tougher. Just a thought! 💛☀️

    We buy super bulk like that too. I need to do the buckets but just haven’t made it a priority. I did learn to freeze my flour for a few days before adding it into a container to prevent bugs hatching. We had one bag that infested our whole pantry

    Can organizations is easy if you don’t put several different things in one slot. It also keeps the oldest forward. But it could be the 25 years of working in a grocery store that helps me.

  • @sarahjost9826
    @sarahjost9826 ปีที่แล้ว

    was curious how you organize to ensure that you use everything before the expiration date. Im sure most of those things have such a long shelf life so it might not even matter. But, do you put the newest to the back so you’re grabbing the “older” ones first much like a grocery store I guess, or do you go through everything and then make one large purchase? Buying in bulk doesn’t fit our lifestyle right now and I don’t know a ton about it so its always cool to hear you talk about those things!
    Side bar: Really cool to see how your systems have changed as your family and your space grows and changes! Just goes to show that there is no one perfect method!
