But I have always wanted to be able to fix them, as I am an admirer of most 80s vehicles and many come with their issues. You make it quick and to the point. Love your stuff!. I got a 2000 mustang v6. I bought for 3000. A/C condensation leak on the O2 sensor.. I ran 1/4 inch hose into the drain then wrapped it underneath the firewall. No more stalling problem.
My vw's valve is huge lol. Leaked and got oil covering my MAF which for some smart reason was at the bottom of the intake. Cleaned it all up and runs 100% again. Not bad for 180k miles
Replacing a PCV valve is not as easy as it used to be on some vehicles. I've got a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The PCV valve on that is located beneath the intake manifold, That meant I had to remove the manifold to reach it. That, in turn, meant I had to remove the throttle body and since the throttle body also has a coolant line running through it, it meant I had to plug up the respective hoses leading to and from it. There was also part of a wiring harness that was attached to the bottom of the manifold which had to be moved aside.
He's not wrong. A legitimately honest mechanic is hard to come by. The business thrives on duping people, because people just can't be bothered to learn even the basics of how vehicles operate, and basic maintenance. So, someone goes to a shop with a concern and they very often times get taken advantage of.
This is why I'm failing working at AutoZone, I refuse to oversell customers on parts they don't need / I don't push people to buy things they don't want. Apparently treating customers how you would want to be treated when you walk in the door isn't the right thing to do anymore :/

2AR-FE or 2GR-FE engine? On my 2AR, painfully difficult on the RAV4, harder than on the Camry because the suspension seems to be more in the way. I think of Venzas as stretched RAV4s.

But if the piston rings are worn, causing "blow by", the pressure inside the crankcase can force oily thick vapors out and then get sucked through the PCV valve gumming it up. Even worse, the same extra oil going into the cylinders will carbon up the engine. Replacing the PCV valve is part of good maintenance, but if your rings and valve seals are shot ya got at least a partial rebuild on your hands. Props to Scotty though!
You can try stp in the oil to rejuvenate the metal rings 😉😉 before you open the engine.... If that doesn't work you use thicker oil From 0w 20 to 5w 30 Or. Even thicker 10w 40 If it's still not working all of this done step by step Then you can try putting non synthetic oil 5w 30 and changing it every 3 months or 3000 km, If it's still not working you put 10w.30 non synthetic If that's still doesn't work well your screwed 🤣🤣🤣
Sometimes you can even clean out a sticking PCV valve with some carb cleaner and make it as good as new. As long as the rubber seals holding it in place are good, there's no cracks or visible damage to it, and you can hear the thing rattling when you shake it, you're good to go!
You dont need a new engine. Just new seals and rings all throughout engine. New sensor seals. And while it's all apart take everything and have it machined and replace all hoses. Should be a few dollars less than a new engine.
When I bought my Grand Marquis it was going through oil like crazy. It was the pcv valve, but I had to get the Motorcraft one, the cheap one was worse than the old worn out Motorcraft valve.
Seeing this video after it was released by Scotty made me order two PCV's for my wife's 2005 Toyota Matrix which is at 270+K kms, and my 2007 Nissan Altima SE V6 with 181+K kms. I have saved a lot in labor costs just by following Scotty's advices. Thank you Scotty. If ever you get back to Buffalo or Toronto area, dinner's on me.
We are in Germany and I have a 2005 Opel Astra 1.8 ecotec. From what I've read it doesn't have a PCV valve. The engine is burning oil but not in the combustion chamber. It has a little seepage fron the crankcase gasket but there are no oil leaks.
Did mine yesterday in like 20 minutes because of this short video. 284,000 miles and it was likely the original . We'll see if the oil burning slows. Either way,it needed to be done. Thanks Scotty.
You'll also feel performance improvement with your engine by simply replacing a bad PCV valve. My dad did this to my 89 corolla and heck, engine ran smoother
Depending on what type honda. The hondas that have the k20s motors and k24s are pretty tough and great motors easy to work on. Huge aftermarket and most parts are more than one or two models so easy to find parts. My toyota parts are double price and last just as long.
2015 Nissan HR16-DE 4-cyl engine... Bad PCV at 63k. Replaced and MPG went up, oil stayed cleaner longer. $8. I now change PCVs on all my cars with spark plugs or when I open stuff up (throttle body, air intake cleaning). Cheap insurance.
A lot of late model cars don't use a valve anymore the use a restriction in the valve cover or in the hose to the vacuum source that can clog and not allow ventilation in the crankcase witch can cause excessive oil use either leaks or burning.
If you don't know when it was last replaced just replace it as it is a very cheap part. If you want to test to see if it is wonder or not just shake it and you should hear a rattle inside. If you hear nothing at all it is not working and replace it as it is clogged and stuck. Ifyou car is har dto find parts for or you are just a cheapskate you can soak it in degreaser fluid or use break cleaner or carb cleaner and soak it and let it sit in the fluid. It should remove all the sticky gunk up stuff and it should now move freely inside and hear a rattle. Best just to get a new one unless the new ones are the cheap plastic ones which many of them are and the old one is metal. The metal one can last forever if you clean it. It doesn't get brittle and break like the cheaper plastic ones they are all made of these days.
My H16 (2015 4-cyl) Nissan has spark plugs under the air intake, the PCV is, fortunately, side-mounted. Now, all of my 2AR-FE and 2AZ-FE Toyota engines... They're buried deep. Insane placement.
Be careful about removing some pcv valves as well. If your pcv valve is anything like mine was, you have to replace the entire valve cover which comes with the pcv. If you try to take the pcv valve off and put a new one on, you're in for a wild surprise later...
Unfortunately the wonderful engineers at Toyota designed the PCV valve in my 2011 Matrix to be underneath the intake manifold. You literally have to pull off the hoses on the throttle body, disconnect the fuel injector rail and then remove the manifold. All that to change a part that cost around 15 bucks!
Had this issue with my 2008 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 2.0T. kept giving me error codes for a lean system on bank 1. Changed the PCV valve and it ran wayy Better but there was now a high idle in my car. Wasn't that high at all. Just a hundred rpms higher but it still gave an error code. I changed the purge valve canister and got it to run smoothly again!
Look up 2006 silverado 4.8 pcv. PART OF the valve cover. Work around, still around $10. Put one in line, instead of changing valve cover, ask me how I know...
Had one break on me in a 2009 lancer, replaced that sucker and went from burning a liter of oil a week to nothing and have put on another year and a half of driving since and not had any issues since
My car does not have a PCV valve. It has an oil separator and a flame trap. Same idea, though. Older Chrysler cars also used an oil separator that needed replacing every so often.
Just replaced my spark plugs, coil packs, pcv valve, pcv sensor and map sensor on my 2014 Hyundai veloster with 98k miles. This car is surprisingly easy to work on even though there's practically no room under the hood. Bought the car new and now runs like a champ. She was hunting for gears on hills got terrible mpg and started to not want to start. The map sensor was all gunked up and the check engine light never came on. Dealership couldn't find anything wrong.
The pcv valve might be cheap, but depending on the car, the labour to do it, could be higher. I have found it’s become more complicated to change with newer cars.
General motors had the bright idea when they had that 3.1 multi-port fuel injection motor, they put that PCV valve way underneath the intake with a non flexible hose on it so it can cost you a bunch of money to replace that one

Most overlooked maintenance item on the engine! Sometimes hard to find and some not replaceable! A lot of euro cars use a fixed orifice that needs to be serviced!

A shop didn't reinstall mine correctly after doing valve cover gaskets on my Ranger. I didn't notice until I saw frothy stuff on my filler cap. Head gaskets were good, while testing I found the PCV valve out of the valve cover. Reinstalled it, problem solved.

Careful when removing the PCV valve as the grommet is likely brittle and can break and fall into the crank case. Happened to me.

Toyota decided to put the PCV valve for my 2011 Venza under the intake manifold. So a simple replacement becomes a pain in the butt.
That just Toyota doing what they do best and over designing their cars

On my stupid Ford Contour, the $7 PCV valve was extremely hard to get at to replace. Genius design!

Failed smog test, only replaced PCV... PASS SMOG... got offered a job as a tech!!

For Hondas it’s not always the PCV valve they are other factors to burn oil
Had this issue with my 2008 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 2.0T. kept giving me error codes for a lean system on bank 1. Changed the PCV valve and it ran wayy Better but there was now a high idle in my car. Wasn't that high at all. Just a hundred rpms higher but it still gave an error code. I changed the purge valve canister and got it to run smoothly again!
Look up 2006 silverado 4.8 pcv.

Work around, still around $10.

My mechanic cured a rough idle by replacing a collapsed PCV.
Had one break on me in a 2009 lancer, replaced that sucker and went from burning a liter of oil a week to nothing and have put on another year and a half of driving since and not had any issues since
My car does not have a PCV valve. It has an oil separator and a flame trap. Same idea, though. Older Chrysler cars also used an oil separator that needed replacing every so often.
Just replaced my spark plugs, coil packs, pcv valve, pcv sensor and map sensor on my 2014 Hyundai veloster with 98k miles. This car is surprisingly easy to work on even though there's practically no room under the hood. Bought the car new and now runs like a champ. She was hunting for gears on hills got terrible mpg and started to not want to start. The map sensor was all gunked up and the check engine light never came on. Dealership couldn't find anything wrong.
This was the cause of massive exhaust smoking on my 94 Camry about ten years ago. $3 fix.

The pcv valve might be cheap, but depending on the car, the labour to do it, could be higher. I have found it’s become more complicated to change with newer cars.
General motors had the bright idea when they had that 3.1 multi-port fuel injection motor, they put that PCV valve way underneath the intake with a non flexible hose on it so it can cost you a bunch of money to replace that one

Most overlooked maintenance item on the engine! Sometimes hard to find and some not replaceable! A lot of euro cars use a fixed orifice that needs to be serviced!
Those things been around since early 70's. I always carried several for trips. Expensive lesson learned when young. They are cheaply made

My pcv valve was like 100.00 on a 2008 mustang , but it repaired the oil leak on the ground

A shop didn't reinstall mine correctly after doing valve cover gaskets on my Ranger. I didn't notice until I saw frothy stuff on my filler cap. Head gaskets were good, while testing I found the PCV valve out of the valve cover. Reinstalled it, problem solved.

Change the grommet too. Sometimes they leak after a while.
You can usually just spray those things out with brake clean also
Cleaning doesn't prevent future failure. Under $10, just drop a new one in... Cheap insurance.
