I hadn't thought about it previously, but even if one seldom nicks themselves whittling, the gloves can serve the secondary function of helping prevent blisters, either from the spine or handle of the knife, or from hotspots on the workpiece itself.
Thank you for this video! I enjoy carving morel mushrooms just like this, but want to try birds. Imagine a bookshelf with many of these birds, different types of wood! I want to find those gloves as well!
You had company of bird's spring choir as you worked outdoors. Sounded as there may have been a crow possibly alerting to the cat. Crows and jays get raucous when cats and snakes are about. A very pleasant and informative video. Thanks for sharing

Just a side note, I use the protective tape over the glove on the thumb, index and middle fingers of the hand that I hold the carving in. This gives an added benefit of better grip on the project In addition to extra protection for those fingers.
9:14 I have those exact gloves and I was a little skeptical at first so I tested them - even with the glove lying on a solid surface and slashing across it with some weight behind it they still don't cut, but like you say they will probably offer little to no protection against a stab. Overall I was pretty impressed with the cut resistance, it's definitely one of the best choices to protect your hands

Hi it was Proops knife...they sold off sets very cheaply many years ago, but I notice them coming up on the web, I think they are made in Sheffield by a company beginning with a b, so perhaps a Google.
Another alternative to an axe that I like to use, is a Khukuri knife. Works a bit like an axe, but a lot more control on smaller pieces of wood 🤙 Another tip for better grip on smaller pieces of wood, is to use a piece of bike inner tube as a grippy pad. I use them a lot for knapping too, stops me from dropping all my arrowheads 🤣
nothing more soothing than the sound of a sharp knife cutting thought green wood. the chirping of birds in the background also helps.

I love carving. The first item I did was of a civil war soldier with detachable musket and everything. It came out pretty good.

I found some curly willow that was very soft.

For the safety of your legs, you could wear a leather apron or a pair of leather chaps, The type of farrier would wear to shoe horses with
