fMRI - How it Works and What it's Good For

For a long period of time we didn't know anything about that brain. That's because it's extremely hard to measure changes in electric signals that indicate brain activity.
Scientists had to wait until 1992 for the invention of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) in order to observe brain activity.
This video was made for the www.fastforwardscience.de competition, but is and will remain freely available for all interested in learning a bit more about how brain scientists use for their work.

Das Gehirn war für eine sehr lange Zeit ein Mysterium. Das liegt daran, dass die elektrischen Ströme, die Aufschlüsse über die Funktionsweise des Gehirns liefern können, extreme schwach und schwer zu messen sind.
Wissenschaftler mussten sich bis 1992 gedulden. Die funktionale Magnetresonanztomographie (fMRT) ermöglicht den Blick in das aktive Gehirn.
Dieses Video erklärt, wie fMRT funktioniert und zu welchem Wissen über das Gehirn es uns verholfen hat. fMRT bleibt ist auch heute noch ein Platzhirsch unter den Methoden der Neurowissenschaftler und wird auch in Zukunft vieles über das Gehirn in Erfahrung bringen.

I recently completed my PhD in psychology/fMRI and I'm now going to start a postdoc using fMRI data. Despite being kind of an expert in the area, I'm still amazed by how it works, and still watching this video from time to time. The best short explanation of this technology out there IMO.
