That's just a mind blowing...reminds me of the man who went missing at Lake Michigan ...skis were found at lip of the lake but the man was eventually found somewhere else (I believe California)
To me. Sounds like he fell out of the boat. Prob hit his head, which would explain him not remembering anything and then his pure instincts kicked in. Which means all common sense and emotions went out the window. Thankfully OUR big friend 🦶 helped him and guided him to safety ;) 🦶
My call on the first case of Charles .... He had a series of " mini strokes" at the lake, became disorientated, wandered off in a state of total confusion. His level of fitness and military background would explain his ability rise above the physical effects and remain mobile. 20 days later in Arizona still badly disorientated and after a few drinks at a bar he has a more severe stroke. That stroke explains the head injury from the resulting fall and also the paralysis to his left side.
I had a series of mini strokes when I was in my early 20s and it never made me disoriented. And if it did it was very short lived and more likely it would've prevented him from getting up and worst case scenario he would've been found unresponsive at his camp. He wouldn't have wondered off while having a stroke. A stroke would make a person incapable of moving great distances and most likely would prevent him from going far. I think it was a dogman maybe.

It doesn't matter how fit or experienced someone is, there will always be a possibility of unforeseen circumstances, especially in the the wilderness, that no manner of planning, fitness, or level of expertise can account for. I completely understand why loved ones and search teams hold on so tightly to those ideas, though. It gives people hope to believe the odds are in the missing person's favor, but sometimes it seems like this mindset lends itself to developing a kind of tunnel vision that can hinder the search. I'm not here to lecture the men and women who put their own lives on the line to find complete strangers in the wilderness on how to do their jobs. I certainly couldn't do what they do, I'd just wind up with my own missing person's flyer and entry in a Top Mysteries vid. It's easy to go through these cases and say, _"Oh, well, they should have done this."_ or _"Why in the world did they do _*_that?"_* because hindsight is 20-20. Honestly, It's just the fact that these SAR teams do the best they can with what they've got, in some cases, seemingly leaving no stone unturned, and _still_ never uncover a single clue as to what happened, I mean... *_people shouldn't be able to just disappear from the face of the earth without a trace,_* ...but they do. To me, that's the mother of existential crises. I don't believe that closure truly exists, at least not as we collectively define it, but I hope the left behind someday, somehow, find their answers, because not knowing is _so_ much worse than even finding your loved one deceased. I can't bring their person back, but I can send prayers and love to the families and friends, and wish peace to the lost, wherever they are. It's not much, but it's all I've got. Edit: And please, for the sake of everyone who holds you dear, if you're going out, *TELL SOMEBODY.* (Preferably, more than one somebody, even if it's just to the corner store down the block. As intriguing as I find these cases, I don't want your name to be added to the missing persons/cold case/Top Mysteries roster.
Telling people where you're going and when you'll be back is one of the most important things you can do in your life in general but especially when going into the woods or somewhere else you could be stuck, hurt, without help. Like I drive in the country for a living so I have my location on and my sister knows about when I'll be back and that she should look for me. There was that story of the athlete who fell and shattered her pelvis, maybe some other bones.. the only reasons she survived were 1) she is superhuman and 2) she told someone about her trip and the person started to get worried She was just out there on the ground for 3 days. She was an ultralight elite athlete and it was a short run for her, so she didn't have anything with her at all
3 points I want to make: 1) Finding skeletal remains of anything in the wilderness is not common or easy. Ask yourself how many times while walking through a wooded area have you come across the remains of anything? So it does not surprise me that human remains can go undetected. 2) Dogs are not infallible. While their sense of smell is far more sensitive and developed than humans, when someone goes hiking into a wilderness they tend (especially in colder climate) to wear several lays of clothing which acts as insulation from the cold, but also "seals off" body from coming into contact with the surroundings and leaving traces of their scent. 3) Thermal imaging scopes are also not what many people believe them to be. For instances, in a heavily forested area with tall trees and extensive canopy of branches and leaves, this can be sufficient to block a person's body heat from being detected from above. Thermal imaging scopes are not X-ray machine. Plus, if the person is wearing head gear or hood, this will also limit the amount of heat given off because we lose most of our body heat from our head.
While the rest of what you say is true, the last part is a myth. The myth that you lose most of your body heat through your head is false. The head only represents about 10% of the body's total surface area. If the head were to lose even 75% of the body's heat, it would have to lose about 40 times as much heat per square inch as every other part of your body. In reality, we lose most of our body heat through exposed areas of skin that are not covered. The amount of heat we lose through our heads is proportional to the rest of our bodies.
People need to watch their children like hawks. I work at a school. We have about 30 preschoolers. 4 are what we call "runners". These children will randomly take of and just keep running until you catch them. They don't respond to being called or head to any specific spot. They will just keep going until they become to tired. They mostly outgrow this as they get older, but autistic or down syndrome children sometimes don't. They're behavior is completely illogical, and so all these disappearance shows that think these children disappearing or going such long ways is strange aren't taking this into account. These children are terrifying to take care of because if they get out of sight you might lose them for good.

I doubt you’ll ever see this but if you do, you should check out the channel called “Beyond Creepy” if you don’t already. Specifically his latest video “The Dark One: Strange and Sinister Encounters” and specifically at the time stamp of 7:45. This story might perhaps shed some light on what happens when the missing persons cases get “bizarre.” Really makes you wonder what is going on. Hope you see it.
You can be highly experienced in anything wilderness but once both feet are past the tree line your life is no longer guaranteed safe, you take a chance every time you enter the woods/forest as this land is something elses home. Im sure 9 x's outta 10 you'd be fine, as long as you are back in your vehicle and heading home a good hour before sunset. Quick true story of mine: A couple years ago a good friend of mine and myself took a trip to the upper Pennsylvania of Michigan. We both live in lower Michigan. We just wanted to experience the northern part of our state. And let me tell you im so glad we went. I think its beautiful and so full of breathtaking scenery. The UP is known for their pasties, which basically they're beef or chicken or veggie pot pies without the pie plate yummmy. As we were sitting outside eating this man came up to us, he had a biker guy style and was quite handsome. He askes if we minded he sit near us as it was the middle of covid. We say sure. We started talking. We told him how my friend and i went into this wooded area looking for a waterfall and leaving we got lost. It wasn't very big, if we would of picked one direction we would hit the road. Thing is my friend was being her moody self and she was making me mad although i didn't say anything to her cus i know how she is. But because her mood she decides to walk in a different direction than me so i was alone and she was alone. We made it out but due to the heat we were beyond thirsty and barely could walk. I decided to go to this random house and pretty much begged for something to drink. A very kind lady let me inside and took me over to the kitchen. I then ened up bringing out something for my friend. It was crazy. Fast forward to the end. This guy told us that hes from the UP and that there was a guy also from there that went Into the woods and never came out and he was never found. He was extremely experienced too. He then said in a firm voice, he said to us to never go into the woods after the sun has gone down and no matter what to never ever go Into the woods or any woods without 3 ways to light a fire. He then said because after dark there are some weird things going on in "dem" woods. I asked like what.....he said there are creatures. And left it at that. Oh and i forgot to mention that the UP is also known for their bigfoot sightings. They even have a tall board painted as a bigfoot at this pasties store. And other places as well. The UP may be all trees but its beautiful there especially a place called Pictured Rock. Look it up its unbelievable. So yeah thats my story. Sorry about the length.

Excellent video! So well made. I like how you put the words on screen as you tell the story. It makes it much easier to go back and find a specific thing you said. The vast amount of wilderness in the US is insane. I live in Arkansas which is an average size state and it would take 5 hours to drive east to west across my state and about the same north to south and outside of towns and most are small is forests, farms and wilderness. Tennessee is to the east of Arkansas and I recently drove across the state to go to the Smokies which is on the far east side and it takes like 8 hours from Memphis and jammed packed with wilderness.
Charles case sounds like he was in a fugue state. This happens more than you think it does and the head injury gives it even more credence. Same thing happen3d a few years ago to a skier in New York state. He fell and hit his head in the parking lot at a New york skiing area and disappeared. A week later he was found in Sacramento California with no memory of what happened. They know he received a ride from a long haul trucker. Ther3s another case of a young woman who suffers from frequent bouts of fugue states and goes Missing for months on end and lives a completly separate life, changing her name and everything.

hi Adam. love the channel. one of the best in this topic on TH-cam. been wanting to put this out there for awhile as I have a theory on this topic which I've never really heard anyone say and it's quite simple. So humans are obviously very prone to being manipulated and influenced by the world and our senses. our brains need so much energy to work right. any lack of energy or over stimulates can have major effects on us and our behaviour. so think about it when your out in the wilderness the oxygen levels can be very high around trees or low up in the mountains. either way this will undeniably effect a person mentally. miner or severe. you don't need drugs or alcohol. simple illusions can make us see things. smells can trigger thought process. sounds easy confuss us. and when your ill or unwell. tired or fatigued you are literally not the same person. this can explain many strange disappearances where the person does weird stuff. walking up hill. dropping stuff. walking through cold water. walking off cliffs. seeing other people but can't call for help. memory loss. all from walking through the woods! not even david paulides really mentions this. anyway love to hear thoughts.
The thing that strikes me about a lot of these cases is that there seems to be an assumption that if no _logical_ reason for a disappearance can be found, then it must be 'spooky' or supernatural, when in fact, the next most likely explanation is that something _illogical but mundane_ happened. Very experienced people still make mistakes, indeed if everybody keeps telling them how experienced they are, then that may lead to overconfidence which suckers them into a situation that's beyond their capabilities. People who are 'sensible', 'rational' or 'of sound mind' can still do random, out-of-character, stupid things. Maybe they have a giddy moment, or do something careless, have a random accident or act logically on bad information. We're complicated, and a good deal less predictable than we care to admit. I'm a decent enough driver, but I've still had near misses, and I remain just as vulnerable to other drivers' random mistakes as everyone else. I'm a reasonable DIYer, but every now and then I still hit my thumb with a hammer or cut my finger with a craft knife. Competence reduces the _probability_ of failure, but it doesn't eliminate the _possiblity_ of it. Straight-forward bad luck still happens too: I've just been ill with FOUR different things, three of them unconnected to each other, back-to-back. Likely? Nope. Possible? Obviously. My fault somehow? Nope again. Sometimes shit just happens. Also, the perils of being alone and far from help shouldn't be underestimated. Spraining your ankle in the middle of town with a cellphone in your pocket is one thing. Sustaining exactly the same injury halfway up a mountain 20 miles from the nearest roadwith no cellphone coverage is quite another. Even if you survive the injury, the chances of having a follow-on accident, due to the loss of the physical capability that you relied upon to get into the situation in the first place, immediately skyrocket. You don't need to invoke the supernatural to explain how somebody can get into an escalating situation that results in them dying somewhere where they're never found.
Maybe Thomas just wanted to go off grid for a while. I've heard of people with military backgrounds going into the wilderness because of PTSD, & getting away from people because the demons in their heads were too loud. I'm not saying that he was like that just a possibility. I too would've liked to just go off in the woods & build a cabin & live away from all of the crime & craziness, but I'm too old now. It's incredible how a child can survive for 3 days in such harsh conditions when many adults have perished in better conditions is it survival instinct or something or was somebody else involved possibly a kidnapper who later realised they couldn't harm a child and ended up looking after them who knows really.

All of the accusations that he took off and didn't notify anyone of his plans and how irresponsible that was is infuriating since they're only guessing he took off to hike somewhere when they have not a clue as whether or not that's what happened
I just kept thinking it sounded like 'victom blaming' just because the investigators couldn't figure it out. They failed, so they blamed the missing guy.

Hey, one quick comment. In the us, the term survivalist, as in Garrett's survivalist training, means those people who are either political or religious Doomsday Preppers. While that would certainly require survival training, we generally would not use it to describe especially a young person's knowledge of how to stay safe and alive in the woods. We would call that survival training as opposed to survivalist. Other countries who don't use the term survivalist might wonder if there's a difference, and there really is.
Charles might have had a stroke? They didn't have all the diagnostic techniques and imaging at that time. Or, he simply entered a fugue state, which is still not well understood

I used to go backpacking alone up around Mammoth Lakes, CA all the time. I'd be alone most of the time for weeks on end out in the backcountry. I was always safe, carried bear spray and had a few weapons to defend myself. I always stayed aware of my surroundings so that nothing would catch me off guard. Poor Matthew (as well as the rest of these folks). I got lucky, but there are always unforseen circumstances that can cause people to go missing.
the one with the three year old boy who was found, I wonder. Could the nearby residents that "found him" have something to do with it? If he wasn't able to survive out there in the cold alone, then someone must've had been taking care of him. Can't say for sure what happened of course. It just seems sus to me that he was "found" just outside the search zone, by people who lived nearby, and that he was alive and pretty much okay.

Waiting for all your releases, would you cover. "Mary" missing weirdly in Hesley Alaska , 2021 0r 22.... I went to where this happened. Extremely remote. She had a baby in a car seat. She just stopped the car out in the middle of no where, walked off n was never found . The baby sat in car seat for 2 days......... Thanks. Alaska-
The majority of those missing people are teens who runaway over and over and young adults who don't keep in contact with their parents the way the parents are used to. Also 85,000 active cases at the end of the year doesn't mean that 85,000 people are missing. The reporting police departments may not have bothered to update. They're human, they make mistakes, they get busy. There are definitely not 85,000 people disappearing in one year in the USA.

The Garett Beardsley case is so intriguing and sad. It seems impossible that he could have gone missing since the camp was so close. But i watched a video of a man who went camping there and it is very dense and confusing. Even he missed a turn here sign and got lost for an hour.
Any chance it was a polar bear in Thomas's case? He was into the artic circle correct? I'd rather run into a grizzly then a polar... They literally hunt humans
People go missing uk mostly. In. Cities. Like London and Leeds. But they still. Vanish there are many dangers. For young. People. Not by wild animals. More human animals are to blame

If the head were to lose even 75% of the body's heat, it would have to lose about 40 times as much heat per square inch as every other part of your body. In reality, we lose most of our body heat through exposed areas of skin that are not covered. The amount of heat we lose through our heads is proportional to the rest of our bodies.
Plus, it's recommended not to use perfumes or aftershaves, etc, because wild animals can smell them!!

People need to watch their children like hawks. I work at a school. We have about 30 preschoolers. 4 are what we call "runners". These children will randomly take of and just keep running until you catch them. They don't respond to being called or head to any specific spot. They will just keep going until they become to tired. They mostly outgrow this as they get older, but autistic or down syndrome children sometimes don't. They're behavior is completely illogical, and so all these disappearance shows that think these children disappearing or going such long ways is strange aren't taking this into account. These children are terrifying to take care of because if they get out of sight you might lose them for good.

Specifically his latest video “The Dark One: Strange and Sinister Encounters” and specifically at the time stamp of 7:45. This story might perhaps shed some light on what happens when the missing persons cases get “bizarre.” Really makes you wonder what is going on. Hope you see it.

You can be highly experienced in anything wilderness but once both feet are past the tree line your life is no longer guaranteed safe, you take a chance every time you enter the woods/forest as this land is something elses home. Im sure 9 x's outta 10 you'd be fine, as long as you are back in your vehicle and heading home a good hour before sunset.
Quick true story of mine: A couple years ago a good friend of mine and myself took a trip to the upper Pennsylvania of Michigan. We both live in lower Michigan. We just wanted to experience the northern part of our state. And let me tell you im so glad we went. I think its beautiful and so full of breathtaking scenery. The UP is known for their pasties, which basically they're beef or chicken or veggie pot pies without the pie plate yummmy. As we were sitting outside eating this man came up to us, he had a biker guy style and was quite handsome. He askes if we minded he sit near us as it was the middle of covid. We say sure. We started talking. We told him how my friend and i went into this wooded area looking for a waterfall and leaving we got lost. It wasn't very big, if we would of picked one direction we would hit the road. Thing is my friend was being her moody self and she was making me mad although i didn't say anything to her cus i know how she is. But because her mood she decides to walk in a different direction than me so i was alone and she was alone. We made it out but due to the heat we were beyond thirsty and barely could walk. I decided to go to this random house and pretty much begged for something to drink. A very kind lady let me inside and took me over to the kitchen. I then ened up bringing out something for my friend. It was crazy. Fast forward to the end. This guy told us that hes from the UP and that there was a guy also from there that went Into the woods and never came out and he was never found. He was extremely experienced too. He then said in a firm voice, he said to us to never go into the woods after the sun has gone down and no matter what to never ever go Into the woods or any woods without 3 ways to light a fire. He then said because after dark there are some weird things going on in "dem" woods. I asked like what.....he said there are creatures. And left it at that. Oh and i forgot to mention that the UP is also known for their bigfoot sightings. They even have a tall board painted as a bigfoot at this pasties store. And other places as well. The UP may be all trees but its beautiful there especially a place called Pictured Rock. Look it up its unbelievable.
So yeah thats my story. Sorry about the length.

Excellent video! So well made. I like how you put the words on screen as you tell the story. It makes it much easier to go back and find a specific thing you said. The vast amount of wilderness in the US is insane. I live in Arkansas which is an average size state and it would take 5 hours to drive east to west across my state and about the same north to south and outside of towns and most are small is forests, farms and wilderness. Tennessee is to the east of Arkansas and I recently drove across the state to go to the Smokies which is on the far east side and it takes like 8 hours from Memphis and jammed packed with wilderness.
Lol. You should try living in BC. It takes us 14 hours to get from the coast of BC to the BC/Alberta border.

Charles case sounds like he was in a fugue state. This happens more than you think it does and the head injury gives it even more credence. Same thing happen3d a few years ago to a skier in New York state. He fell and hit his head in the parking lot at a New york skiing area and disappeared. A week later he was found in Sacramento California with no memory of what happened. They know he received a ride from a long haul trucker. Ther3s another case of a young woman who suffers from frequent bouts of fugue states and goes Missing for months on end and lives a completly separate life, changing her name and everything.

been wanting to put this out there for awhile as I have a theory on this topic which I've never really heard anyone say and it's quite simple.
So humans are obviously very prone to being manipulated and influenced by the world and our senses. our brains need so much energy to work right. any lack of energy or over stimulates can have major effects on us and our behaviour.
so think about it when your out in the wilderness the oxygen levels can be very high around trees or low up in the mountains. either way this will undeniably effect a person mentally. miner or severe. you don't need drugs or alcohol. simple illusions can make us see things. smells can trigger thought process. sounds easy confuss us.
and when your ill or unwell. tired or fatigued you are literally not the same person.
this can explain many strange disappearances where the person does weird stuff. walking up hill. dropping stuff. walking through cold water. walking off cliffs. seeing other people but can't call for help. memory loss.
all from walking through the woods!
not even david paulides really mentions this.

The thing that strikes me about a lot of these cases is that there seems to be an assumption that if no _logical_ reason for a disappearance can be found, then it must be 'spooky' or supernatural, when in fact, the next most likely explanation is that something _illogical but mundane_ happened. Very experienced people still make mistakes, indeed if everybody keeps telling them how experienced they are, then that may lead to overconfidence which suckers them into a situation that's beyond their capabilities. People who are 'sensible', 'rational' or 'of sound mind' can still do random, out-of-character, stupid things. Maybe they have a giddy moment, or do something careless, have a random accident or act logically on bad information. We're complicated, and a good deal less predictable than we care to admit.
I'm a decent enough driver, but I've still had near misses, and I remain just as vulnerable to other drivers' random mistakes as everyone else. I'm a reasonable DIYer, but every now and then I still hit my thumb with a hammer or cut my finger with a craft knife. Competence reduces the _probability_ of failure, but it doesn't eliminate the _possiblity_ of it. Straight-forward bad luck still happens too: I've just been ill with FOUR different things, three of them unconnected to each other, back-to-back. Likely? Nope. Possible? Obviously. My fault somehow? Nope again. Sometimes shit just happens.
Also, the perils of being alone and far from help shouldn't be underestimated. Spraining your ankle in the middle of town with a cellphone in your pocket is one thing. Sustaining exactly the same injury halfway up a mountain 20 miles from the nearest roadwith no cellphone coverage is quite another. Even if you survive the injury, the chances of having a follow-on accident, due to the loss of the physical capability that you relied upon to get into the situation in the first place, immediately skyrocket. You don't need to invoke the supernatural to explain how somebody can get into an escalating situation that results in them dying somewhere where they're never found.
What if bigfoot sees you spran your ankle...?! Then you are done for!

I've heard of people with military backgrounds going into the wilderness because of PTSD, & getting away from people because the demons in their heads were too loud. I'm not saying that he was like that just a possibility. I too would've liked to just go off in the woods & build a cabin & live away from all of the crime & craziness, but I'm too old now. Perhaps the boat came loose and began to drift away? Hat and coat left as he tried to retrieve it?

It's incredible how a child can survive for 3 days in such harsh conditions when many adults have perished in better conditions is it survival instinct or something or was somebody else involved possibly a kidnapper who later realised they couldn't harm a child and ended up looking after them who knows really.
I think those two area residents who found him on their own had something to do with it

All of the accusations that he took off and didn't notify anyone of his plans and how irresponsible that was is infuriating since they're only guessing he took off to hike somewhere when they have not a clue as whether or not that's what happened
I just kept thinking it sounded like 'victom blaming' just because the investigators couldn't figure it out. They failed, so they blamed the missing guy.

Hey, one quick comment. In the us, the term survivalist, as in Garrett's survivalist training, means those people who are either political or religious Doomsday Preppers. While that would certainly require survival training, we generally would not use it to describe especially a young person's knowledge of how to stay safe and alive in the woods. We would call that survival training as opposed to survivalist. Other countries who don't use the term survivalist might wonder if there's a difference, and there really is.

I used to go backpacking alone up around Mammoth Lakes, CA all the time. I'd be alone most of the time for weeks on end out in the backcountry. I was always safe, carried bear spray and had a few weapons to defend myself. I always stayed aware of my surroundings so that nothing would catch me off guard. Poor Matthew (as well as the rest of these folks). I got lucky, but there are always unforseen circumstances that can cause people to go missing.

If he wasn't able to survive out there in the cold alone, then someone must've had been taking care of him.
Can't say for sure what happened of course. It just seems sus to me that he was "found" just outside the search zone, by people who lived nearby, and that he was alive and pretty much okay.
Surviving stories are the best. Seems like they often have no idea what happened.

I went to where this happened. Extremely remote. She had a baby in a car seat. She just stopped the car out in the middle of no where, walked off n was never found . The baby sat in car seat for 2 days.........

The majority of those missing people are teens who runaway over and over and young adults who don't keep in contact with their parents the way the parents are used to.
Also 85,000 active cases at the end of the year doesn't mean that 85,000 people are missing. The reporting police departments may not have bothered to update.
They're human, they make mistakes, they get busy.
There are definitely not 85,000 people disappearing in one year in the USA.

The Garett Beardsley case is so intriguing and sad. It seems impossible that he could have gone missing since the camp was so close. But i watched a video of a man who went camping there and it is very dense and confusing. Even he missed a turn here sign and got lost for an hour.
