    0:35 You should use the same measuring rod (the blue rod) for all the cuts to keep things consistent. By using the last cut to measure the next cut any errors in measuring will just get worse.

      @@mirelladaza5974 Hello Mirella, I'm very sorry but I don't normally make these chains for sale. It was an educational demonstration. You might be able to find it for sale online from another artist, it's becoming a popular glass project.

    I loved the video. The chain has a ethereal quality to it. It reminded me of Jacob Marley's chain in A Christmas Carol. Good work!

    Hi I'm so glad I got to see how you made the glass chain, as I'm getting a necklace soon with I think 3 or 5 flowers with 5 slightly flattened petals that are glass ,with a glass chain,color is a white with a black center to the flowers,and the chain in same color, can't wait to get it ,as its really beautiful, your work looks so very beautiful, loved the video thank you so much🌺🌺🌺🌺🍂🍂🍂🍂🍁🍁🍁🍁

      Thanks glad you enjoyed it. The glass chains are very attractive, when I wear mine out people are always checking it out. They arn't as strong as metal chain however, you need to use caution not to drop it. But it can always be repaired.

      Matt Jasa yes that's true, I make my own beaded jewellery, and beaded collages I find it very relaxing, even elastic bracelets I change the look from normal, by adding dangles and a chain with a dangle in the middle, and right and left side of the chain, and it looks awesome!!!!, do you make glass flowers, would love to see that, thankyou for getting bk to me ,its nice to hear from people.👍👍👍👍☺😃 PS I forgot to like and subscribe, so now all done, want to see more of your work!!!

    this is mesmerising! I wonder if you could do a breakdown of the equipment needed to start working with this kind of glass. I have no idea how any of this works but I'd love to learn. Will watch more of your videos to start.

    Thank you so much for your video! Can't wait to try it out! What diameter of rod do you recommend.? What would be the most thin you would use so it wouldn't break easily? Thanks.

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You could try the 4mm color rods, I'm using 7mm in the video, which is the normal size the mfg. sends it as. Smaller rods might be a bit more difficult to start. For breaking just don't drop it. The links collide into each other, its a bit different then dropping a marble or pendant.

    nice work. why is ur flame green ?

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use trapped souls to fuel my torch. Jk, I'm using a purple dydinium filter on the camera to reduce yellow flare. To reduce the purple I add in extra green when I edit the video, which makes green things red and blue flames green. It's a bit of a conundrum.

    Makes me want to go buy a torch to start practicing.
    I know it's probably hard to measure but how much weight do you think chain links can hold?

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would imagine not as much as a metal chain, but still a decent amount. Glass is more susceptible to sudden shocks and impacts. It would make a good science video to test it.

      Thanks TKyron! I used to use royalty free music. It does add something to the video and helps hold peoples attention, but I dunno I just got tired of using other peoples work.
      After I did the Glass Guitar Pick episode I've been practicing my guitar everyday. I've been including some little licks at the end of my recent videos. Eventually I want to do my own music. Thanks again for watching and coming along on this little adventure.

    Hi Matt, one more question: do you batch anneal the completed chain putting it into a cold kiln and then slowly ramp up to a boro schedule? What ramp up rate do you do from a cold kiln? Many many thanks!

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jill, it is easier to lay them out in a cold kiln specially if the chain is cold. But I don't worry about stressing them, I ramp it up at full speed and run a normal boro schedule. The links are relatively thin and of equal thickness so it warms up very quick and evenly.

    i want to learn how to do this. how long did it take you to get to this point? how much do the torches cost?

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm happy you want to take the fiery path! Everyone travels a different pace on this journey. I believe I was making glass chain after about a year. It really depends on how dedicated you are to practicing.
      Small practice torches begin at $200, but a larger 2-stage torch like mine are about $1000+.
      There's additional equipment costs (regulators, ventilation, safety glasses, glass) which you need to consider. In all you might expect to start out at around $1500 for a small setup.
      After you have your studio setup the only thing you need to buy is propane, oxygen, and more glass.
      Let me know if you have any additional questions.

  • @jillwinston9959
    @jillwinston9959 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Matt, Thank you so much for all your glass info. I love it. I have another question about the glass chain. After you make the whole chain, which sits on the bench as you make the next link until you get to the length you want, do you put it in the kiln with the kiln hot at 1075? or do you put it in the kiln and warm it up to annealing temperature and then run it through the annealing schedule?? I really appreciate your time in answering this!!!!!

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey again, Info is what I do I love to teach :). Well I normally will wait until the whole chain is finished before I anneal or kiln it. So all the links are bench cooled carefully as i'm putting it together, you don't want to touch any hot links against the cold ones. You could anneal the sections at anytime if you wanna be safe but I wouldn't 'pre-warm' anything in the kiln as its a very hands-on process so its safer to warm one link at a time. I hope that answers your question, if not let me know. Happy Melting!

    What it was suppose to say is--- that is exactly what I want to learn!! AND are you using COE 104 glass or boro ??

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Awesome! I love hearing when other people are interested, the glass world has a lot to offer. I do use Boro. Boro has some subtle differences to COE 104, I find it tends to break differently. Your left with larger less sharp chunks, I rarely accidentally cut myself. Arguably it is easier to work since the COE is much lower (33 compared to 104).

  • @stope420

    How many rods would you say you would go through per chain? If 30 links were used at around 4” of rod, that’s 120” and average rod length is 18-20”... so prob 6-7 rods per chain roughly?

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it was 3" of rod so about 5 rod's, you might want to buy extra just in-case.
      The 7mm diameter rods makes for good practice but fair warning the finished chain will be heavy. A smaller 4mm diameter chain might be a better way to go. Best of luck on your glass journey!

    How long is your first link?

    • @MattJasa
      @MattJasa  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the rod was around 3 inches before I bent it. You can try different sizes, if it's too small you'll have trouble sticking the 7mm rod through the hole of the link.
