    My family moved to the US in 1988. Prior to that, we were living in the mountains of Southeast Asia and had little-to-no influence by the West. One day I came home from First Grade and I told my father that a man would be coming over soon to drop off presents for me. At the time, my father was suspicious of my mother cheating on him. So he stayed up all day and night waiting, and I think I helped fuel my parents divorce.

    As a German I actually had to look this up: CGP refers to "Kris Kringle" as being based on the German tradition. The tradition in question seems to be the "Christkind", which is entirely unrelated to Santa but a more popular alternative character in some parts of Germany (though Coca Cola helped Santa win). Apparently it's a botched pronunciation of the regional dialect diminutive "Christkindl" -- which is confusing as heck as the German word doesn't actually refer to anything anyone would recognize as Santa (who in Germany is simply called "Weihnachtsmann", literally "Christmas man"). To make matters worse, we also have a St. Nicholas ("St Nikolaus") who is related to Sinterklaas but not part of Christmas itself but instead visits in early December.

    • @UncleDumu
      @UncleDumu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Alan Plum This goes back to Martin Luther & the Reformation. Luther didn’t like saints as they weren’t biblical, but he still wanted kids to enjoy Christmas, while restoring Jesus as the main Christmas figure. So he retold the legend that it was actually the Christ child who hands out presents at Christmas. Hence, Christkindl. Of course, this only caught on in Protestant areas of Germany, not the Catholic ones, where Luther was PNG.

    I discovered early in my life that Santa is actually my father, since each Christmas he conveniently went for a nap right before Santa appeared, and he was not in the room where he took the nap. Also, they had the same voice. There is several years since last time this phenomena happened. It is probably because the rising population of the Earth, so he doesn't have time for the five-minute personal visit to his family. But this is the proof that Santa lives in northern Norway.

    I laughed when Sinterklaas said: YOU SHALL NOT PASS.
    I celebrate Sinterklaas and Christmas. And I was always told that Sinterklaas had a younger brother named the Kerstman (Santa Claus in Dutch) who lived at the North Pole. (While Sinterklaas lives in Spain.)
    So Sinterklaas did Europe and Santa Claus did the American continents.
    And I went like: That sounds legit.
    EDIT: Ok so I am hearing a lot of questions about why Spain? 😂 well cause that's where Sinterklaas lives. Why? I dunno but he has a cool castle there. And if you were naughty they would put you into a sack, kidnap you and take you to Spain.

    In Greece we have Agios Vasilis (I guess the best translation is Saint Basil). He was thin and red haired and a Bishop from Cappadocia. He was charitable and built a city, Vasiliada, where orphans, the poor and the old had places to stay. That's why he brings the presents. Also, here, he visits children on New Year's Eve instead of Christmas Eve (because we celebrate him on January 1st)

    You left out an important thing about Sinterklaas/St. Nick. Here in the Netherlands we celebrate Sinterklaas on the 5th of December and Christmas on the 25th (and 26th) of December. So although Santa is a mix of 'our' Sinterklaas and Father Christmas, it are 2 completely different holidays here in the Netherlands. Which not many people know about

  • @silvianblom7336

    As a Dutch person growing up in the 90s this video is really interesting. When I was younger I was told that
    "Sinterklaas" was real and Santa Klaus was fake. Although many family's told children the reverse. So I often accidentally caught
    myself mixing these two up. Especially since we have embraced these 2 icons as separate but still sell merchandise for both.
    Interestingly this obvious similarity is often portrayed as them having a friendly but competitive rivalry to see who can make the most children happy / deliver the most gifts and the reason they're so much alike is because they simply take ideas from each other.
    "Sinterklaas" has kind of grown out of popularity lately because of some controversy so you don't see him as often anymore but it was everywhere when I was growing up.

  • @martijnvanweele6204
    @martijnvanweele6204 8 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    The Dutch Sinterklaas is supposed to come from Spain, which I imagine is a nicer place to live than somewhere above the arctic circle. I've been told that this idea arose in his early days, during which "Spain", to Dutch people, was synonymous with "far away". It might as well have been the north pole, though Spain is a little bit more present in the collective memory of the Dutch (f*** you, Philip, we do what we want), and perhaps because of what happened to Willem Barentsz, we don't really think of the north pole as a place where joy comes from that easily. Also, the actual "historical" (quote on quote because I'm not certain wether or not he actually existed) Saint Nicholas was from the Turkish town of Myra, which is more towards Spain than it is towards the north pole. Also, if you come from Myra by steamboat (like Sinterklaas traditionally does), to someone in the Netherlands, it looks very much like you're coming from Spain...

    • @Quintinohthree
      @Quintinohthree 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think though St. Nicholas lived in modern Turkey, at lest some of his remains were taken to Spain, so with the advent of the Ottoman Empire, He became St. Nicholas of Spain (or whatever the actual place is called).

      Not really. He is from Myra, then East Roman Empire (Nicholas was ethnically Greek after all), now Turkey. After his death his remains were brought to the Italian city of Bari, by then part of the Kingdom of Napels, itself part of the Crown of Aragon. Aragon in turn was one of the many kingdoms ruled by the Habsburg family, better known as the kings of Spain. So we didn't fought against Spain as a nation, but to get rid of the Habsburg king who simply happened to rule from Spain. Later the family would split into two branches and that's how the name later became associated with the archduke of Austria.

    Iceland actually has 13 Santa Clauses or Yule-Lads as they are apparently called in English.
    They used to be bad people, stealing and pranking townsfolk but have since then started giving back to the population by leaving kids small toys or treats every day, starting 13 days before christmas, each day a different Yule-Lad.
    They each have a special name and a certain behaviour tied to that name, some rather funny and strange like perhaps Window-Peeper (Gluggagægir)
    They also of course give the bad kids, but instead of coal like is maybe the usual go to "bad present" they get potatoes, originally rotten but i am guessing those may be harder to come by in this day and age.

    Having worked for USPS, if you address a letter to the North Pole, it will be sent to North Pole, AK where they will send the letter back with a postmark. Since it's all volunteer work, they ask that you send a prepaid envelope with it and before you send it out, write on the back or another paper a reply to the child like it's from Santa because you truly know what Santa knows 😉 I recommend it to everyone who has kids.

    It's always funny to me, when in movies or something else, they talk like Santa visits every single house in the world. Here in south-east part of Ukraine we never celebrated christmas on the 24th of December. The whole magical-gifting-old-man happens on the New Year's nights, between 31st on December and 1st of January. His name is Ded Moroz (Old Man Frost or Grandpa Frost). Instead of raindeer there are 3 horses who can call blizzards and snowstorms, he leaves presents under the (for the lack of the better word) Christmas Tree. He usually wears red or blue outfit, has a staff and looks a bit more serious, than Santa usually depicted. And he has a wicked hot granddaughter called snegurochka a.k.a. the Snow Maiden. And yes, he's the one (in the folk lore) who freezed Napoleon's army. In such situations he's called General Frost)))

    • @demilung
      @demilung 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Well, another reason is that in main christian confession in our country the Christmass is on January 7th, not in december, and it's after the New Year.

    You completely forgot to mention the story behind all of these stories. Saint Nicholas was a 4th century Greek Orthodox bishop in what is today Turkey.
    According to legend, he took pity on a man with three daughters, whose family could not afford a proper dowry for them. In the middle of the night for the next few years, he would leave a bag of coins in their house, and it eventually added up to the amount they needed. There are a few other stories of him helping children and working miracles.
    As this story spread throughout the Christian world, newly converted Northern Europeans blended Saint Nicholas with the elves and gods in their folklore.

    Well in Sweden we don't open our presents at the christmas morning. Santa comes home to us at the evening of christmas eve, then the presents are opened.
    Why?
    well, because long ago, when the sun had set, and the darkness entered, it was seen as the start of the next day. So when santa came, it was dark and then it was the next day (christmas day).
    An other thing I want to point out is that in the beginning of our christmas celebration, it was a (some kind of) christmas-goat (or goats) that somehow came with the presents and then, they were replaced by santa. So that may be the answer to why we still open the presents on christmas eve.

    I honestly think that it would make more sense if the Doctor was Santa. 1) It's canon in the show. A quote: Rose: "Look at you, prancing around like you're Father Christmas!" Doctor: "Who says I'm not? Red bicycle when you were twelve." 2) The TARDIS would definitely help out with getting everywhere in one night. 3) The sleigh could have been the pre-chameleon-circuit-broken TARDIS (the doctor could've been santa for every christmas ever in a relatively short period of time before the CC broke)
