Really disappointing, the tricolor looked so good
For anyone who thinks Minnesota is exaggerating about its 10,000 lakes: there are actually 11,842 lakes that are at least 10 acres or larger.
We like humility us Minnesotans
If people don't believe 10,000 then wait until they hear about Manitoba...
And don't let anyone from Wisconsin tell you they have 15,000. They define "lake" as anything larger than a puddle.

Any wisconsinites that want to argue Wisconsin has more lakes, your state doesn't put a lower limit on lakes, and the number of lakes technically doubles every time it rains in Milwaukee.
As a Minnesotan I am disappointed that we did not get laser loon.

As a Minnesotan, I wanted the Starflake (aka F29) to be our new flag. I’m adopting as the New Minnesota Flag in protest anyway!

To add as a Minnesotan, I feel old wavy is just too corporate and will be the new state flag. Us Minnesotans are used to being disappointed in the 11th hour
ETA: I was thankfully wrong and it appears MN is going with the good Ole tri color

I think at first glance I liked old wavy but every time I look at it I'm like "Yeah... no" and I do fear it will become our new state flag...
As a fellow Minnesotan, I absolutely cannot believe the commission got rid of the Starflake in favor of Old Wavy during the latest round of voting. The Starflake won a public opinion poll with over 12,000 respondents and it was also the commission's top vote getter in the vote to decide the six semi-finalists. But then it tied for last in the vote to decide the three finalists, thus getting eliminated. What changed?

As an Austrian, I was surprised to see our flag under the "tri-color examples", seeing as it's red, white, and *the exact same* red again... :P
I believe maybe by tri-colour he meant tri-bar? Otherwise that's a serious blunder.
You have quite an odd definition of "serious". at worst, it's a minor typo.
When I first saw the tricolor flag I thought it was good, but I now really like it because I realized looks great vertically.
Hey I know it's too late but I just wanna tell everyone I designed F304 and I'm very proud to say it was one of the finalists before the final 6.
I looked it up, pretty cool design, very similar to Polaris Tricolor. I imagine people with OCD would be very upset about it though. Way better than Old Wavy. Great job, my friend! :D

Cannot be understated how much "looks like a flag" is essential for designing a state flag. The tricolor is the only viable option bc the others are arguably banners and would look more at home on a dorm room wall instead of in front of the state house.
Could not agree more! I think the rule "looks like a flag, not a corporate logo" is going to be increasingly important for flag redesigns.
As of today Polaris Tricolor has been selected by the committee. It is now considering variations to the design.
Sadly, they removed the tricolor and left it as a light blue field. I preferred the three colors.

The only problem with Polaris tricolour is that it’s too good. Like it’s surpasses “state flag” look and creeps into the “country flag” look.

I am in the (apparently very small) group that likes Old Wavy the best, but all three of these flags are massive improvements over the current one.

Born and raised Minnesotan Art Director. Popping in to say thanks for the video, and also, your opinion is correct. I particularly like your consideration for the vertical hang, which really makes Polaris Tricolor even *better*, and is an easily overlooked aspect.
Minnesotan here - You should make a reaction video to the variation of the Polaris Tricolor that was chosen. I think they butchered it.

I preferred Star Rise until you mentioned how it would look hanging vertically. After that, I'm with you 100% on Polaris Tricolor.

The only reason I don't like Starrise (an otherwise good flag) is that I'm positive that I've stayed at an inexpensive hotel with exactly that logo. Or maybe a retirement home. It looks 'residential', like the flag of Minnesota's property development consortium, or something. I guess some people would say that's what a state is...
I paused the video when asked and ended up agreeing exactly with Grey, EXCEPT THAT NO Old Wavy would be better than the current flag!

As a Minnesotan closely following this race, I've been a fan of Old Wavy since the beginning, and I still like it, but this video did raise the standing of Polaris Tricolor in my estimation (which is good, because it is now our flag). Also, it amuses me greatly to have one of my favorite TH-camrs commenting on my state's flag redesign ;)

I totally agree with that ranking. However I don't even hate Old Wavy that much. These are all improvements I think.
At first, I didn’t like any of them, but Grey, you got me interested on Polaris Tricolor. The thing that bugged me the most about the two other flags is that they looked like paintings, and going off your criteria for grading the state flags, “a flag is not a painting.”

Oh. My ranking was the reverse. Old Wavy looks distinctive and evocative, Star Rise has a similar idea but simplified, where as Polaris Tricolor looks like the flag of some small country I've never heard about.
The moment I saw the Polaris tricolor I was like THAT ONE! It really is shocking that the K or inverted triangle hasn't been done before. As Grey said, it feels so natural in the context of flags.
Polaris Tricolor is my favorite for sure. It needs to be the official flag RIGHT NOW!!!
Old Wavy looks like a 1990s-era software splash screen. The only thing missing is a background gradient.
I think Old Wavy is a pretty cool flag design. It's not every day you see something like that with no straight lines, but it doesn't particularly look messy at all. I like how the two blues, one white, and kind of muted yellow work well together. It gives off a welcoming vibe that's not too sharp or industrial. Plus, it kind of reminds me of the Cathay Pacific logo, which is one of my favorites. Old Wavy, like the Cathay Pacific logo, is simple but unique and has a certain charm to it.
I prefer the third option for the Polaris design. The strong green color in the original option feels too harsh between the light blue and white colors. The third option's color scheme makes more sense to me. The sky is blue, the snow is white, and the landscape is a lush green. Although, if the third option kept the same colors as the first option, it would still work for me.
My favourite was actually star rise …until you showed it sideways. Yeah okay, polaris tricolor it is.
Also, that new state seal is AWESOME.
I didn't dislike Old Wavy but my God the inverted triangle as a simplification of Minessota itself is OUTSTANDING. Go Polaris tricolor!
I absolutely love the Polaris Tricolor as a native Minnesotan. That "K" shape on the flag is something you see everywhere.

The Polaris Tricolor isn't just mimicking the state shape, it's a quarter of the Mi'kmaq star (8 pointed tribal star design) that all three non-finalist flags have.
I like the idea of the Old Wavy, but it's hard to make and paint. So it gets a no. Good point about hanging Star Ride vertically. So I agree, Polaris Tricolor is good and can work even on an international level. And, kids can draw it in crayon.
As a new Minnesota resident, im pulling for Polaris Tricolor. It was my favorite from the start (other than laser loon and Republic of Minnesota with a mosquito)

Also, I personally prefer "Old Wavy" over "Star Rise". "Star Rise" is the epitome of boring, just a word inside it away from being the logo of an agricultural company.

Honestly my first impression was it looks really cool, but it definitely doesn't look like a flag, like it could easily not stand the test of time, like corporate logos and such.
I don't think swooshes belong on flags. Old Wavy is a swoosh logo. It's more appropriate for a 2000s company.
Am I the only one who thought that little tangent of state seals sounded like a great video. Like Grey ranking them like he did the state flags would be a great watch

My own ranking: Old Wavy, then the tricolor, then the Star Rise. It's important, in my view, that the symbols in flags stand for something actually distinct about the place they honor. Every place has green land and blue skies. Every northern place cloaks its hills in snow. But to put the Aurora and the river in the shape of the state bird? That creates a meaningful distinction!
It's sad that it doesn't have a representation of the Thousand Lakes, but neither do the other two. It'd have to be vert ten roundels azure, or something like that, to properly evoke "lakes" and not just "lake"!
Guys the flag they chose is the Polaris tri color flag but the stripes are light blue and the inverted triangle is dark blue 😢 Minnesota failed us

What i liked the most about polaris tricolor compared to the rest in this vid is that its the easiest to draw if you’re a kid. Draw the K in which is easy to eyeball. Get some help with the star admittedly, but after that flags almost done!

Another Minnesotan here also rooting for Polaris Tricolor! The next meeting of the redesign commission is like 12 hours from now, we'll see what happens next! (Polaris Tricolor DID have the most votes outright when they narrowed it down from 6 to 3!)

Minnesotan here, 100% the tricolor fits our vibe. The desaturated green reminds me of the trees up north at a buddy's cabin.
Seeing the animated depiction of Minnesota behind the flag makes the flag look even better!
