  • Battle mode has been a staple of Mario Kart since the very beginning, and each game has had very different versions of it, from Super Mario Kart with Balloon Battle, to Double Dash with Shine Thief and Bob-Omb Blast and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with Renegade Roundup. Today, I'm talking about these different modes and games and will decided once and for all what Mario Kart game has the best battle mode.

DS was peak for balloon battle. Overall, deluxe is the best. Besides original 8 Wii U, wiis and 7s were pretty lame. Wiis was ruined by it's terrible forced teams.

Battle mode on N64 was my favorite. I like online but when there’s too many people everything is just too random. 4-6 players is just perfect with 4 being the best because you have to look for people hide from people and you don’t just randomly get hit by “grandma” or “dad” because they’re just spamming green shells everywhere

    Here's my ranking
    9. Super Mario Kart
    8. Mario Kart 8
    7. Super Circuit
    6. Mario Kart 64
    5. Mario Kart DS
    4. Mario Kart 7

    1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
With this ranking, I mostly went by the stages and how they're executed (plus any gimmick they have) and not so much on what the modes they had. Also I feel like your ranking of DS is nearly always biased since you love the game so much and mostly focus on what's good, when DS has many flaws you fail to recognise.

I think the replacement of elimination-based balloon battle in favour of time-based really soured some people on 8 Deluxe’s, 7’s, and especially Wii’s battle mode

    • @Latias38
      @Latias38 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Honestly Id give DS #1 over Deluxe just for the 1 main reason he stated; DS's battle mode was very strategic. Deluxe has pretty much everything you want in a battle mode, and just by what it does have; yea its justified a #1 spot, but the gameplay of DS is soo unique compared to every other battle mode in the series the fact like it felt more in control and your victories felt a bit more earned. In other words; gameplay execution > content
But yes DS's battle mode does have quite a bit of faults; only 2 modes, having to use the DS microphone to blow up balloons, and only 6 courses; although I did like every single course that it did offer

    • @jomaq9233
      @jomaq9233 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess MKDS to some extent, does have more flaws than a lot of people realize (most of the new tracks aren’t that great in comparison to other games in the series, and the SNES, GBA, and GCN retro tracks overall seem to feel… wrong with Mario Kart DS’s limitations)
Also nobody talks about the fact that MKDS could be limited by not having an analog stick? Is the d-pad control really that much of an improvement over the SNES and GBA games and not that big of a dealbreaker compared to the other games in the series? I’m genuinely wondering about this because nobody seems to talk about the lack of analog stick in Mario Kart DS, despite that being the main complaint about Super Mario 64 DS

If I'm being honest, almost every battle mode has something interesting about it that seperates it from the rest, and because of that, I want to rank my thoughts on the battle modes here.
    9. Mario Kart 8: Of course this battle mode is terrible, but there's aspects of it that I strangely wish were brought back to Deluxe's battle mode, like the fact that death is permanent and you roam around as a ghost. Plus, it's interesting that the team actually had to dig through finding the most courses to put into battle mode. But overall, it's just not very fun.
    8. Super Mario Kart: The fact the battle mode exists is probably the coolest thing about it, and I will say that the unlimited bounce for green shells and Super Leaf make it insanely chaotic in the right group. However, my main problem is the fact that IS 2 player only, and it makes the whole thing feel kinda empty. And the maps FEEL designed for 4 players in mind, especially with the 4 color grid that's still there.
    7. Mario Kart 7: Honestly, I think while this battle is objectively better than the previous ones, I find it the most bland and generic overall. It's got the same general issues with modern Mario Kart battle modes with the online focused structure making the game less chaotic and more streamlined. But what makes it 10 times worse than the others is the track designs. The new tracks are hit and miss while the retro tracks were geniunely underwhelming. For example, I think GBA Battle Course 4 would've been a BLAST with the water gimmick instead of Palm Shore being even blander than it already was. However, there CAN be fun to be had when those moments DO shine which is why it's still not at the bottom.
    6. Mario Kart Wii: It started the problems I have with modern Mario Kart battle modes, but I put it above 7 because the maps are MUCH better and more plentiful. Every map is fun in it's own right and feels great with Wii's engine. One problem with the mode however is that you're forced on teams, which can encourage camping more than every other game in the series and arguably give you wins you don't earn.
    5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: By far the best of the post Wii battle modes with tons of game options and loads of fun to be had with the maps. However, I still say that the game's Balloon Battle would've greatly benefitted with the original 8's ghost system so that there's more consequence to worry about. Frankly, it's modes like Shine Thief and Renegade Roundup are why it's so high.
    4. Mario Kart Super Circuit: Now we're getting into my favorites. Now Super Circuit's controls are usually annoying since you'd be racing with slippery movement. But in battle mode, it genuinely gives it a fun flow like you're geniunely drunk driving. And plus, Battle Course 2 and 4 are geniunely a lot of fun, which again, I think could've been great choices for 7. And alongside this, I gotta mention the Bob-Omb Kart here is able to respawn and use items and makes it even more insane than 64's. Seriously wish the Bob-Omb could've came back in later games.
    3. Mario Kart 64: These last 3 were geniune torture to rank, but here's what might just be the meanest battle mode in series. Now I know 64 isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the jank is geniunely what makes it all the more fun in my eyes. The red shells, the character's weight being able to cause damage, Bowser's being broken, antics with the Banana Bunch, the Bob-Omb Kart, etc. It just gives it a disrespectful vibe that's a LOT of fun if you're looking to be sadistic for a game night. Helped by some of the best courses in the series like the classic Block Fort.
    2. Mario Kart Double Dash: This game should speak for itself, with the two driver system alone putting it above the previous games. But the options are what place it so high, with being able to chose 4 player free for all or 2 on 2 teams, 3 amazing battle modes to chose from, and classic maps like Pipe Plaza.
    1. Mario Kart DS: This battle mode has everything I want in a karting arena. 8 players which choices in free for all and teams, an amazing assortment of maps including the two classics I brought up before, and Shine Runners being better in every way to Coin Runners.

    My ranking:
    9) Mario Kart 8- I have played this one and yes it’s bad
    8) Mario Kart: Super Circuit- There really isn’t much to this battle mode. It’s better than Mario Kart 8’s battle mode at least.
    7) Super Mario Kart- Basically the same as Super Circuit’s battle mode, but I ranked it higher because the song is honestly very enjoyable.
    6) Mario Kart Wii- I actually really like most of the stages but this mode suffers from forcing you to play on teams. I also like the battle modes that are elimination based more.
    5) Mario Kart 7- Basically the same as Mario Kart Wii but you can choose whether or not to play on teams so I guess I like it better overall. However, the stages are definitely worse overall than the Wii ones, especially the retro selection. I also don’t get why it’s automatically set to 4 stages per round.
    4) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe- I have not actually played this one. However, I do appreciate all the effort they put into this especially in contrast to Mario Kart 8.
    3) Mario Kart: Double Dash!!- The battle modes are very enjoyable and the stages are almost all great as well.
    2) Mario Kart DS- I really love this battle mode as well. I even enjoy shine runners about as much as this game’s balloon battle. The stage selection is excellent as well and it’s amazing they brought back the 2 best battle stages of all time.
    1) Mario Kart 64- It may be a lot simpler than something like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s battle mode, but it does pretty much everything right. There are 3 really solid stages to play from and also Big Donut. Seriously though, Block Fort in Mario Kart 64 is the best battle mode experience in Mario Kart history. While understandably overshadowed by Block Fort, Skyscraper and Double Deck are solid as well and deserve a lot more attention. The best thing about this battle mode is not only is it elimination based but once you are eliminated you turn into a bomb kart and can still attack other players. This is the coolest idea implemented in any of Mario Kart’s battle modes.

From the games I've played with friends in Battle Mode Mario Karts excluded are
    Mario Kart Super Circuit
    Mario Kart DS
    Mario Kart Wii
    Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart 8 U (I'm putting U in case of confusion for the original Mario Kart 8)
I do not own Mario Kart DS
I own Super Circuit with Wii U Virtual Console so I cannot play with friends
I own Super & 64 on Wii U Virtual Console and have played Super on the Switch as well
I have never played DS or 8 U
I have never played battle mode with friends on Wii
I have never played with friends on 7
    #1
    A tie
64 Wii U Virtual Console & Double Dash
I don't know if it's because I annihilate my friends and family in 64 but I find both extremely fun especially with bob-omb blast in DD but I do love 64's as it's the most insane and unfair battle mode while being fun at the same time the only problem is it's somewhat one sided on who's enjoying as someone is probably getting destroyed and if it's equal it's difficult and unfun
Bob-omb blast in DD is so fun especially in Block Fort as bombs are more strategic then you would think it's like chess one second your winning then you figure out you were cornered the entire time then you have a countermeasure prolonging the conflict that's how I would describe
Bob-omb blast in DD as always a literal blast
    #2 8 DX
tons of modes fun physics more friends online what's not to love?
well there's the maps which I will say are pretty good but not as good as some retro ones like Block Fort I would shoot SNES battle mode returning track in a heartbeat for some other track besides it from the other games
it's a little overwhelming the simplicity of the old ones are nice and simple 8 DX is just overwhelming
once you start winning it's kind of hard to lose just because your team mates will probably have your back
when playing with just friends it's a blast but it's not as engaging as 64 & DD as I don't get that rush that I get from the older games as much as
8 DX and maybe it's just because it takes more skill in the older games
    #3 Super
oof only played it once with a friend and we did not enjoy it
    it was frustratingly hard
unsatisfying as getting skilled at super or super circuit is a challenge in itself due to the drastic change it has from the others as the oldies are just a different drift and physics difference and less features meanwhile the first and third change for the worse as coins are needed to win which is true for 7 8 and 8 DX but still those have the fun in it meanwhile the first and third are too different especially with it's drift functionality
for those I've never played I've heard of never experienced
8 is the worst literally no battle maps just tracks from the actual races which is awful
7 it's okay it's a lot better then Wii but still has some inconvenient thins
Wii this is where the battle mode began controversy as this game forced team battle and timed battle which was awful
DS Not only considered the beginner to the success of modern Mario Kart but is also said to have an amazing battle mode comparable to 64 & DD's which is very high praise there's also the "interesting" blow into mic and get balloon back system which is okay just a gimmick
Super Circuit This is the hardest game to play with friends today as there is no re-released version with multiplayer meaning you need other GBA's and link cables in order to play with friends and I've heard it's not worth it as it may have had the largest track selection in the series as it had 40 tracks 20 from Super while DD had 16 which is the only reason I say DD is weighed down as it has low tracks which is just a byproduct of it's era in the series being the worst selling game in the series and being the 4th game in the series
The battle mode itself is like Super's which if it's true is in my bottom 3 ranked as I despise Super's battle mode right above or below Super's as 8 will always be the worst just for having zero effort
Also re-release DD it is debatably the best Mario Kart in the series
