Yes, I might have stated it if in a more light hearted way but it does seem to me he is encouraging people to be anal. Your 'Karen' reference is most certainly applicable and relevant. And carrying a bunch of 'reference' pictures... oh for god sakes. This is a bit over the top and I'd bet most busy hairdressers could very well be annoyed by this. If they ask maybe, but near 100% of them just want their scissors sharpened fast & well. Then GTF out of their hair... no pun intended.

Anything you would suggest to get started? I’m in Colorado, definitely not coming to compete with your business! 😄. I was thinking about picking up pro scissors and practicing, but you probably have much better advice!
I've watched this and read the comments . I guess I have taken shears and scissors for granted. Apparently they are very complex tools. Maybe you are better off buying new instead of chancing a bad sharpening job????

But is seems that many of the sharpener websites or videos I come across, have the attitude that "Everyone but me is a hack and a screw up. I alone know how to sharpen your shears correctly!" Is there really that much bad work out there, or is this all a sales gimmick? It's not like sharpening shears is a rocket science or anything.
Yes. Lots of sharpeners will say "everyone else is a hack, I'm the only one that does it right". I take a different approach. If something came with a specific edge geometry, it should stay that way. If you can see the sharpening, I dont feel it was done properly. As for training, lots of people and companies offer training. However, the training can be limited, and more geared towards having you purchase equipment from them. "In order to do it right, you have to buy my tools". I do train people, and offer it for a reasonable price without the sales pitches or BS. However, there are, if you look, others who are equally of even more qualified than I am who are brilliant trainers who don't provide the "education for a sale" approach.
Austin, It is not rocket science, As with many things anyone can learn this skill. And there is a host of info on the topic online these days. My only advise is study each and every shear you get to sharpen with a strong magnifier, see what is and where is the problems and fix it. But don't treat every shear with a 35 degree bevel as often HACKS will do. remember these are that stylist MAIN tool. you will be fine. BTW hope your project is going well!

I can take two exact shears, neither have been sharpened before sharpening with the exact same methods. Often there will enough 'personality" that one will have to be tweaked a bit to achieve maximum performance. I've Often said ,bad haircuts grow back, bad sharpening don't

If your sharpener alters, breaks, destroys, or provides the incorrect edge type (bevel vs convex) they should replace your shear. As in buy you a brand new shear to replace the shear they destroyed.
If they decide to hammer or bend the handles to adjust the tips and the blade breaks, or they are honing the face of your shear and they burn the steel, or if they ruin or damage the ride lines from improper adjustment. Etc.
I've been sharpening going on 30 years. Fortunately I had training in a factory where they started out with raw materials. And learned the art of free hand sharpening. I own 2 flat hone machines one fixtured the other not. As well as a vertical sharpening machine. I have taken pictures, typically it's a shear that was basically destroyed by another sharpener. I'll sharpen and finish one blade and leave the other un touched until I get my picture.
It help me a LOT. the tip about cutting fine cotton is GOLDEN. DIY sharpening,NOT shears: I used a sharpie to mark the cutting edge and used a diamond used for my saw blades. Good light and a steady hand.A vice.
I find it interesting that people talk about a semi convex edge. There is really no such thing as a semi convex edge. Somebody come up with that name and now everybody uses it. There are only three types of grinds: convex, bevel, and concave. The concave grind (or hollow grind) is produced by a round wheel, like a Twice as Sharp. Everything else is either a bevel or a convex. The bevel grind is flat. Now, there are an endless number of radiuses on a convex grind, because it varies according to how the sharpener works his or her wrist as they are convexing the shear. But no matter the radius, it’s still a convex grind. When the factory sharpens a coated shear, they grind in a small bevel. That’s it. It’s a bevel edge. Does this make sense, or am I off base? Garry’s Sharpening.

They might not have been designed that way but i've repaired numerous pairs of shears that started out as convex edges but a sharpener who either lacks skills or doesn't care, has put them on a machine designed to sharpen a beveled edges and "GROUND" into the convex edge at the cutting point.
In other words, “don’t trust anyone who doesn’t do things exactly as I do”. Pretty arrogant. If you don’t trust someone or can’t find anyone who does trust them; don’t use them.
Again your advise is very valuable ! Most stylist don't even know how to adjust tension. Be informed !!
