Walter, I was so happy to see this video pop up. I've been thinking about you this past week and was wondering how your big trip went. Here are some things that stuck out to me. Of course your filming is superb all the time, but I thought I'd let you know what else captured my interest. Day 1 I loved the talk as you were cooking dinner. I could absolutely feel how tired you were. I feel the same way every night I get into camp. Day 2 This is silly, but at 10:10 when you mentioned the larch. You have to see the Monty Python episode about The Larch. Hilarious. The Bradley Wales Vista looks beautiful. I liked the voice-over narration here. Your map graphic was cool. How did you do that? Nice fire! The owls and coyote audio was great. Had to be a little scary at night. Day 3 That's crazy you didn't see a person up to that point. Did you ever end up seeing anyone after that? Looks like there was plenty of water sources. Great shot at 20:50, walking the edge of the canyon, then the reveal of the canyon. Oh my, that shot of the canyon at 21:45 is gorgeous. Walking out on Barbour Rock at 22:10 had me nervous for you. It truly is spectacular! Yo!!! You gave me a shout out in the credits! Thanks, man, so cool. I thoroughly enjoyed your trip. Great work! Now you've made me want to get out there.
Wow, such a wonderful and detailed comment, thank you so much for that, this type of feedback is invaluable. The level of exhaustion I felt at the end of day one was unbelievable, i think i came across more composed than i actually was, it was pretty bad! The narration part, was certainly something that I borrowed from you, I bought a mic but I wasn't completely happy with how the sound quality came out, its something that I will probably tinker with a bit more in the future. One of the things I struggled with was how to actually film over a longer distance. I am used to taking 100 - 150 clips over a hike of several miles and that kind of pace was obviously not possible. In addition, the added weight of carrying a pack which was fatiguing in itself, also made it harder to hold a steady camera and limited my creativity a bit as I didn't want to waste any uneccessary energy on setting up shots that I would probably end up editing out any way. I ended up taking 280 clips I believe, which came out to about 100 a day. I used the narration to fill in some spots on day two because I barely talked all day and had started thinking in my head at that point that this would be a silent hiking film. The maps were from google earth, I took a couple screen recordings on my computer . For some reason my old computer would not allow me to use this function, I have been trying to create and use those types of animations for well over a year! The reason I reffered to my second night as Porcupine Camp was because two porkies came right up into my tent area around 930 pm and pretty much rooted around all night. I am a super light sleeper and when I first heard the first one coming in, all types of scenarios were playing in my head. Of course I was thinking bear, which it wasn't thankfully, but until i got the courage to peak out of the tent, they were some very tense moments! Ended up seeing a couple day hikers around the state park, and a fellow backpacker right when I was near the end of the trail and yes there was water sources everywhere, probably less as the summer heats up, obviously. I was happy to give you a mention in the credits, your story of picking up backpacking later in life is very inspiring! We should try to collaborate on a project together sometime, maybe an over nighter trip, or a long day hike our filming styles are very similar i think.
@@WALTERZOLNA Very well put together video! I like narration as well, but I would prefer it to be louder than the music. The music is good, but I think it could be more in the background, let the natural sounds of the forest and your narration take center stage! I hope to hike this trail next year, been putting it off for far too long. I tend to stick to loops and shy away for having to be shuttled. I did hike Old Loggers Path last year and I think this is pretty close. I hope to hike this and maybe the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. Keep hiking and keep the videos coming, you did a great job! I'm off to check out your channel and see what else you have done!
Dude, you rocked that trail! Great job! I wouldn’t worry about doing big mile days on backpacking trips. You definitely have the right mindset of “it’s the journey, not the destination”.
Im not going to lie, I was pushed to my limit that first day, I don't think I have ever been that exhausted . Day two and three got much better, I also moved some gear around in my pack which helped too, I think. It was certainly an experience, and I gave you a credit in the end credits, because watching some of your vids has been a big inspiration to me, so thank you for that. Already checking out options for a fall trip, so maybe you were right when you said backpacking can be addicting!
you always say you're running out of adjectives to describe a place, well i'm running out of adjectives to describe how wonderful your videos are, truly the best...breathtaling, informative and inspiring to say the least!
Thank you for those kind words, they are so much appreciated. It truly is a blessing for me to be able to experience these places, and a great pleasure to share them with you and anyone else who wishes to watch . Im just continuing to try and get alittle better with each one.
This was my first solo backpacking trip. Beautiful area and a perfect first trip! Thanks for all you do. Im a Pennsylvania resident and hiker as well. Makes me pretty happy to see someone with a similar appreciation for these beautiful trails.
I have been visiting the Pine Creek Gorge since I've been a child. Its' beauty is endless. I have many memories, good and bad, and my love of this place will never cease. Thank you for taking me back. Great video as usual. Carry-on! ROCK ON!!!
Outstanding video Walter. You never fail to show the absolute BEST of Pennsylvania. I certainly admire your stamina and determination to showcase the beauty of our state and this effort was a tour de force. Many many thanks. Looking forward to the next adventure.
Thank you so much for that, it's a beautiful state, very underrated in my opinion. This was certainly a new challenge and a new experience for me, but a very rewarding one as well, thank you for supporting the channel!
First time I came across this and I absolutely love it. My dad and uncle first introduced my family and I to this area and surrounding counties back in 1966. By the way excellent choices for music.
This video brought back many memories. I've hikes this trail in the fall with my Dad. The Grand Canyon is incredible. Your filming and choice of music is awesome. You have a gift, Gator. Thank you for sharing.
I was surprised when talking to people that virtually no one i spoke with had ever heard of the PA Grand Canyon. Such beautiful country out in the PA Wilds there. I can only imagine what it must be like in the peak of fall, and I am happy this was able to stir up some fond memories for you, Kate. As always thank you for your support of the channel!
awesome backpacking trip and really great camera work. You definitely walked much further with all the filming but well worth it. Beautiful and very wee edited. Your awesome my friend!
Thanks Tony for watching and leaving a comment. Hiking with a full pack and filming the way I do was definitely a challenge for me, those guys and gals who do this for hundreds of miles are in some kind of incredible shape. I also want to say that I had been planning to do this trip for a long time but kept pushing it off for different reasons. Seeing the unfortunate situation you have gone through recently was on my mind during this trip. I realized how quickly things can change in life and I decided that I needed to stop making excuses and just go out and do it. I gave you a credit in the end credits, so I guess in a way I want to say thankyou for giving me a nudge to push myself to get out there and try to live life to the fullest.
@@WALTERZOLNA I am super glad that you made made the plan work. Looks like you lost some weight too you're looking good. Thank you so much for having my name in your credits and knowing that I inspired you to get this hike done really makes me feel good. You're filming that style is what makes a hike worth watching but yes very time consuming and if you were hiking hundreds of miles you would get your trail legs and it would all work out. Until I'm able to make some miles I will just keep coming along and hiking through your filming production. Can't wait to see your next adventure. Staying tuned!!!!
Backpacking really is a whole other level of challenges. Filming is much more difficult, simple things like holding a steady camera are more challenging when carrying the extra weight of a pack, but all the extra work makes the results that much more satisfying. Thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel!
Thank you so much, this was by far my most ambitious project to date and I gave it my best. I think it turned out pretty well, I would have liked some better skies, I was really looking forward to some really dramatic sunrises and sets and taking lots of timelapses but it wasn't to be.
Yea, I really liked that intro song, that was actually my favorite part. Believe it or not, I actually did the intro before I went on the hike. I did all my titles and graphics and coordinated them to the soundtrack. Then when I got back I just filled in the video clips.
You're so right, it takes a day or two to leave civilization behind and really 'enter' the natural environment. It was nice to see the PA Grand Canyon from the rim. I did it the easy way: we rafted down the creek. That was shortly after Hurricane Agnes in '72, and there was tremendous flood damage down there.
Thank you so much for the kind comment, Pennsylvania is a very underrated state for its scenic beauty, in my opinion, and it was my pleasure in putting this together.
Thank you my friend, yes night two was very active, i am a light sleeper and i didn't get much sleep that night! Appreciate your watching and leaving a comment, I did my best to give an accurate representation of the trail, it really is beautiful country out there.
What a hike! We’ve spent quite a bit of time at the PA Grand Canyon, but riding bikes on the rail trail. Pretty cool to see some views from the rim, definitely somewhere I would like to hike someday. I haven’t backpacked in years, but you’ve inspired me to start thinking about doing it again. As always, excellent video!
I've camped several times at Colton Point, prior to this excursion, always had a good time. Would love to do a canoe trip down Pine creek I think that would be awesome. I gotta admit backpacking was tough. It's alot of work, definitely a big step up from a basic day hike. I did a 5 mile hike on Saturday with my day pack and it felt like I was carrying nothing!
That it is my friend. This journey was a blessing to me, it was quite the experience, to really be out there and be able to get away from the chaos of the modern world, and absorb the natural world around me. Appreciate you buddy, happy hiking.
I enjoyed the video production, surreal in nature. Used your video as one of my research ones for my hike next month. Knowing your limits will prevent your ego from injuring you, that’s not a flaw or something to apologize for.
The fall season is nearly upon us and yes you are right this is probably one of the best places to see the fall colors. I am looking forward to some fall hiking!
I hope you get the opportunity to do so as well, Wandering Woodsman. As I have said before, watching your channel has been one of the primary motivating factors in getting me to try my hand at filming and documenting the amazing world we live in, and I sincerely thank you for that .
Wow! Such an incredible video! The video quality is amazing, you do such an awesome job editing you videos. I really enjoyed watching this. Just subscribed. Can’t wait to see more. Im doing research to do this same hike in May 2023
Man I appreciate that, thank you so much! I hope you are able to make it out to the west rim trail, it's an awesome experience, and May should be a great time to do it. Happy hiking my friend!
Joseph thank you so much for that! I really try my best to make my videos of the highest quality that I can, and I truly appreciate your letting me know that my efforts are noticed ! Happy hiking my friend!
The background music adds such a warmth and fullness to the richness of the video. What a great selection! Well done! Again. Thank you for all the $, time, and effort spent, that you do for us. I could be wrong, but it looks like one of the advantages of backpacking here as compared to backpacking the Rockies is no bear bag needed. Is that correct?
Thanks Harry, this was quite an experience here on this trip. So here is the thing about the bear bags. When I reached camp on day one I was completely exhausted, I had intended to hang one but I was literally too tired, so I took my chances. They are not required but strongly recommended. Some places require bear canisters like the Adirondacks I think, and others don't. I have heard Appalachian trail hikers say they have done the whole trail without ever bothering to hang one. On night two I got lazy and didn't bother again, but I was super nervous when those porcupines came into my camp because I had no idea what they were at first. So I guess it's a question of how much risk you are willing to take.
Great video! 11miles is nothing to sneeze at for day 1! Especially with a backpack! I could sense the exhaustion though but kudos to you for knowing your limits! That’s a valuable piece of info you need when doing these kinds of things! So cheers man; new sub here! I’m originally from PA (have a couple day hike videos up from there) and I did the West Rim trail as my first backpacking trip ever back in 2020 and I wish I filmed it so thank you for sharing and helping me reminisce 👍
Thanks Michael for checking out the video and the subscribe. I think the west rim trail was a perfect intro hike into backpacking, it's a major step up from what I had previously done but not overwhelming. I had such an adrenaline rush and excitement to begin the journey, that after that wore off and the reality of trekking with the pack set in, I really crashed by the end of the first day. Day 2 and 3 were alot easier.
This is incredible! So many vistas to reward you for those uphill climbs. To be fully immersed in nature's journey, not having to turn around to get back to your starting point. And it looked like you had the whole place to yourself (minus the critters). How did you keep track of your mileage on the trip? Did you use an app? You said you learned a lot on this trip. What did you learn? What are you glad you did? What would have you done differently? I know the first day you were struggling with exhaustion, did it get better over the next 2 days? Or did you hike differently, knowing your limitations? What wisdom would you pass on to other first time multi-day hikers/campers? What would you recommend as a must have or a leave it out of your pack? Now that you've crossed this off your bucket list, does it light a fire to do more of these high mileage hikes? I like the new voiceover on the video. You videos are so well done, I appreciate seeing the cut clips showing that it's not always easy to get all these beautiful shots that you show the viewers.
Belle Woods, great to hear from you, wow that is alot, let me try to answer a few of them. One thing I should have addressed better in the video, is that I used a trail guide written by Chuck Dillon which gave step by step instructions on the trail. Not only did it provide a map and navigation tips, it was full of interesting natural, historical, and geological information about sites along the trail. I would recommend this guide book available at Pine Creek Outfitters to anyone doing the trail. Will I do more longer trips in the future? Yes, but probably only in the fall or early spring. I wouldn't try this type of trip in the summer, too many bugs, overgrown trails - that's something I didn't really show and will only get worse in the coming months - some sections were really thick and I did pick up at least one tick from this hike. I think for me, a trip where I can keep the mileage at about 10 per day is ideal, especially with the time and effort it takes to film. As far as advice for rookies - I would say do alot of research before setting out. Keep your pack as light as possible, start off with some longer day hikes and maybe some reasonable overnight trips and gradually work your way up. There is really no substitute for experience and that takes time. If there was one thing I brought that I didn't use it was extra food, and extra clothes and also both a flashlight and headlamp. You really got to pair things down as much as possible. Thanks so much for watching and such thoutful questions Belle Woods!🙂
Came across this video and your channel. Really nice shots and the information was terrific. My wife and I are looking at hiking it this year. When did you hike and how long in advance did you have to setup a shuttle ride? Thank you again for sharing your adventure.
Thanks Jim for watching and leaving a comment. I did this hike the week before memorial day mid week. I set up the shuttle about 1 week in advance I believe. The driver told me there two busy seasons are spring white water for rafting which fluctuates year to year based on water levels, and the fall foliage season. I was the only person on the shuttle when I went out. They were very accommodating, it was a very easy and convenient experience.
The mid state trail is another level of cruelity, probably one of the most brutal trails there is. Not for me, I like a trail with a lot of bang for the buck. Thanks for the comments @eastcoastexplorer6886 !
10.5 miles first time backpacking is pretty good, my first time with a pack with similar weight was in the smokies and I did just around the same distance to mollies ridge, second day I thought my knee was gonna snap off. Hope you took a liking to the backpacking experience.
I like it but it's rough. A lot of work... It all depends on what you are looking for out of an experience. Me personally, I like to car camp at very select sites at the right times, and day hike as much as possible using these spots as a base. For me this is the best bang for your buck.
@@WALTERZOLNA do you have a recommendation for sites along pine creek to use as base camp for day hikes? Id like to hike the 30 miles at some point, but my fiance wouldnt survive! I was looking on maps at Colton Point as you said in video but maps wont produce any sites I could find.
@@jaredanderson7494Colton Point is a state park it has tent camping on first come first serve basis. You can do the short hike to Barbour Rock , the turkey trail which leads down to Pine Creek and past the falls or do a section of the west rim trail. Lots of trails close by many many , it all depends on what you are looking for. But Colton point is a beautiful base of operations to explore the larger region...
I have done plenty of day hikes here in Pennsylvania. I have given thought to possibly doing a section, maybe a week or a couple weeks to see how far i can get, yes very much so...
Thirty five pounds? That’s way too heavy for a 2-3 day trip. Even with all the electronic gear, 25 lbs should be plenty. That’s not including water of course. Anyway, nicely produced!
Nice, I live about 6 miles from there, the locals are called ridge runners and anyone who moves their are called flatlnaders, the locals are extremely biter it's because we take their jobs and women. Keep hiking and don't support ridge business.
Well thats some interesting insights... As a person from the "city" who hopes to some day retire to a place like that, I found this interesting, thanks.

I gotta admit backpacking was tough. It's alot of work, definitely a big step up from a basic day hike. I did a 5 mile hike on Saturday with my day pack and it felt like I was carrying nothing!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing your trip. :)
I appreciate that thank you so much. Alot of work Into making this video but what an amazing experience it was, thanks for watching and the comments!
Gorgeous and inspiring video!
Thank you so much for that generous comment, its truly appreciated!
Ten miles is a great hike per day. Enjoyed this video and it inspired my wife and I to hike it this coming summer. Thanks again.
That's wonderful to hear that, makes me very happy to know the video served as an inspiration. I hope you guys have a great hike!
Good stuff man. Good stuff.
That it is my friend. This journey was a blessing to me, it was quite the experience, to really be out there and be able to get away from the chaos of the modern world, and absorb the natural world around me. Appreciate you buddy, happy hiking.
Great video I’m planning this trip for this spring now I really enjoyed this video
I think you will really like it, it's really a good one!
Well done! Heading there next weekend.
Sweet, have a good one brother, I love it up there!
I enjoyed the video production, surreal in nature. Used your video as one of my research ones for my hike next month. Knowing your limits will prevent your ego from injuring you, that’s not a flaw or something to apologize for.
Good luck in your hike, it's a great trail, thanks for checking out the video and leaving a comment...
Beautiful! Would love to see the place in the fall. It's the most beautiful season in PA.
The fall season is nearly upon us and yes you are right this is probably one of the best places to see the fall colors. I am looking forward to some fall hiking!
Hope to do this someday.
@@WALTERZOLNA thank you!
I have Seen many outdoor videos but yours stand out for sure 🔥
Amazing video my friend. New subscriber here. Thanks.
Thanks so much Robert, I appreciate your subscribing, it means alot to me, thankyou.
Great video ! Recently found your channel. Very good quality video. Will be following along.
Well thank you so much Joe, welcome to the channel! I hope to hear from you again soon, take care my friend.
Lindo lugar.
Thank you fidel nadal!
That's on my bucket list, but Laurel is afraid of bears. I didn't see one bear in thirty miles. Thanks for taking us along.
They are out there but they won't hurt you... Now Bigfoot you gotta watch out for....😁
Great video!
Nice film work and soundtrack. Is this hike a loop?
No, it's an end to end hike, hugging the western rim of the PA grand canyon, hence the name, West Rim Trail!
Still haven’t done this trail. On my bucket list too. You want a challenge. Hike the Mid State Trail.
Have you ever considered hiking some of the Appalachian Trail? Definitely more crowded but a great experience none the less.
I have done plenty of day hikes here in Pennsylvania. I have given thought to possibly doing a section, maybe a week or a couple weeks to see how far i can get, yes very much so...

Peace be with you my friend.
Ive been told there is a shorter version of the trail where its around 22 miles, is it true?
You could cut the hike in half to about 15 miles if you walked from one of the end points to the mid point at Bradley Wales which many people do.
Would you be interested in doing the trail in spring of 2023 with me? I did it in 2021 and 2022!
Thirty five pounds? That’s way too heavy for a 2-3 day trip. Even with all the electronic gear, 25 lbs should be plenty. That’s not including water of course. Anyway, nicely produced!
Agreed. My next trip coming up shortly, I hope to get down to about 25lbs.
