Im a 54 year old Australian, been playing and watching cricket as long as I can remember. Sri Lanka has a special place in Australian hearts, most Aussies would rank the Lankans as their 2nd favourite team. I remember watching Kalu and Jayasuriya opening in a one dayer at the MCG one night and they were the first pair I'd seen take Glenn McGrath completely apart, finished with 0/76 off 9 overs. Some of the best players of all time have come from Sri Lanka, I hope to see them back at the top again soon.

As a Sri Lankan Thank you so much for uploading this documentary. The biggest down fall I can explain like this. The consistent winning ability came after 1996 world cup win. In 1999 world cup disaster arjuna, aravinda, roshan etc. Droped from the team. But there are some experienced players who played more than 8yrs international cricketers like Sanath, Marvan, murali, Vass type of players. After the retirement of those players there are also players who played more then 8 yrs(Sanga, Mahela, Dilshan, thilan, Kulasekara etc). But after the retirement of Sanga mahela and Dilshan. Only experienced player remain is Angelo mathews. Chandimal, thirimanne also their but they only played 4 yrs at the retirement of Sanga, Mahela, Dila. I think we missed so many cricketers who born at 1980 to 1986 specially batsmans . So many of those cricketers went abroad to play cricket. We havent played at least for our strength in 2015-2021 season only won 1 odi series. Player dedication was left. After the youth policy of the selectors some of improvement has come wining the asia cup odi series win against Australia, south Africa. Yeah we had a bad patch in cwc 2023. I do think sri lanka can bounce back.
This is my opinion the down fall has come missing those players who born in 1980-1986. Ex- Thilina Kandamby, Jehan Mubarak, warnapura etc.

As an Indian born in the 2000s I had the fortune to watch a very strong Sri Lankan team play under Sangakarra or Angelo Matthews Captaincy, The 2014 T20 WC defeat kinda hurts but all of the kids of the 90s and early 2000s are grateful to watch such legendary players play for Sri Lanka, Really missing a once competitive Sri Lankan side.

DSilva, Ranatunga, Mahanama, Vaas, Attapattu, Muralitharan... Along with Kaluwitharana, And Jayasurya... OMG.. It was really a spectacular team.. And they setbthe fielding standards in Asian cricket. During my childhood, we used to collect picture cards of cricket stars which you get when you buy a chewing gum, and Jayasurya, and Dsilva were the most sought after cards along with R. Mahanama.... I am from Bangladesh and I grew up in a time when Sri Lanka was overshadowed by big nations like Australia, India, Pakistan, etc. I never really considered them as a great cricket team. I am glad I watched this video because now I know their true story and how good they once were.

It's very sad that once me and my dad loved to watch Sri Lanka's game. Sri lankan cricketers classic shorts like Sangakara, openers outstanding performance and magnificent bowling. It somehow changed everything just like this video said . Still my father also said to me After Bangladesh lost to Sri Lanka that(I was a little angry that time and started debating with my dad about our country's disappointing performance then he said ), "they will win this Asia cup again because their teamwork is good and young generation raised well they'll make a good comeback. But when I saw the news Sri Lanka lost very badly I was both happy and sad . Me and father never talked or debate about cricket since. He never watched any cricket match after that including this world cup (he watched only Afg vs Aus I was outside 😅) and I only watched the finals so we never watched together since . I also somehow lost taste about cricket because of Bangladesh's disappointing performance this WC . I hope Sri Lanka comeback again. It is verry disappointed that mighty sri lankan cricket is getting troll by some other countries. No one knows how to fix this or god is this a fixable one?. Shammi Silva and the company ruined SL cricket . He has privilleges of Jay Shah. ( please don't angry with me , my indian friends) , These two persons and their company use their political power for SL cricket. For example : Jay shah secure Shammi's place in last Nov-Jan , They banned SL cricket for secure his place. He is blessed by ICC . Other part is Domestic Structure - There are 26 teams play first class cricket in sri lanka , for secure his place in slc , he gave 1st class status for some clubs for votes (power of politics ).
After 4-5 years they would agin become a strong team as currently they are in the building process (again)

Sri Lanka doesn't lack the talent. The talent pool is huge but the players are chosen only from schools with big names and cricket clubs. The management will never go around and find good players around the country. These players are only from major cities like Colombo Kandy and Negombo, if they search for talent in rural areas and other cities they can easily make a perfect and a strong team like the old one

Oh, indeed, absolutely spot on. Back in me early days, there was this smoking hot, remarkably talented all-rounder who played for our club. We, the locals, couldn't even hold a candle to his overall performance. I was thinking how such a talented bloke ended up in a country club without donning the national cap for Sri Lanka. So, I asked him why. He just said 'competition'...
So, back then, we heard that the national team was stacked with talent, and the competition was crazy tough. Even with his skill set, there was nary a chance to secure a spot.The playing eleven, as well as the entire squad, were so ridiculously talented and competitive, they were practically irreplaceable.
I still remember this one Saturday night at the pub, just chilling with me, the captain, and a few others, sipping on a pint. We were shooting the breeze about how the Sri Lankan team, with legends like Jayasuriya, Vaas, and Murali, was an absolute powerhouse. Seriously, it was a tough ask for anyone to step up and challenge them.To prove me point, they went ahead and bagged a series victory on our home turf back in '09, or maybe it was 2010 - can't quite recall. Oh, mate, those Sri Lankan days were something else...

Nothing heartbreaking
As a Sri Lankan, this sport holds significant importance to me. Economically, Sri Lanka cannot compete with other full member nations of the cricketing world. The economies of countries such as India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa are substantially larger than ours, which hinders our ability to reach their economic levels. This disparity is largely due to the incompetence of past and present politicians in Sri Lanka.
For me, cricket has been the sole avenue through which Sri Lankans could challenge these nations. Each victory over countries like India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa was crucial for us. It was our way of demonstrating to the world that despite being a poor country, we could still compete at the highest level and beat you badly.
These victories were a source of immense pride for the average Sri Lankan, including myself. Unfortunately, the current performance of our cricket team has diminished this pride and dampened our hopes.

Your reasons 1 and 3 are interlinked. The reason why the poor quality of first class cricket is also related to politics and corruption. The people who hold power of selections from schools/uni etc are always favouring their other powerful friends and family's kids who play cricket (which is practically everyone in SL).
The real talent of SL fails to get through these barriers and will not be able to fund their way into first class cricket.
Until someone starts sponsoring these kids, we are gonna stay at the bottom for a long time to come.

At present, they are even defeating the Zimbabwean team with great difficulty. However, for the first time in history, the Zimbabwean team had to lose a t20 match, which clearly shows the weakness of the Sri Lankan cricket administration. Cricket should have been in a different place when the greats passed away. Even if the current administration takes some decisions, the players coming from school cricket are not fit to play with the world level players. The same has happened to the national team. Therefore, the changes in world cricket should be brought to school cricket in Sri Lanka. World level position school cricket. The number of cricket clubs should be reduced. After the club tournament, the 9 provinces should form 9 teams and the players selected from them should be divided into teams again and the games should be selected and they should be given 4 years of experience for matches like LPL and brought to the national team. It should be done. If so, we can see real Sri Lankan cricket again, but it is doubtful whether it will happen

I remember that tour when india clean swept sri lanka in all formats (test series 3-0, odi series 5-0 and t20i 1-0) at their OWN HOME. That showed me how serious the downfall of sri lanka, these team is in transition from last 7-8 years, which is just sad tbh.

There are so many reasons for downfall of Sri Lankan Cricket.
No chances for Tamil or Muslim Players. SLC only given chances to Christian and Catholic players. Bhanuka Rajapaksa converted his religion to Born-again Christian from Buddhism to get a chance in National team. Also, they select players who educated from famous schools in Sri Lanka. There are 25 districts in Sri Lanka, but SLC only cared about Players who are belongs to Colombo, Kandy and Galle districts (these districts are 3 districts in Sri Lanka). Domestic Cricket is in a lowest level. Only play in way too slow pitches which only supports for Spinners and never supports for Batsmen. Due to that, Batsmen struggle to take Runs and they don't have confidence to play shots. That's why Sri Lankan Batsmen still couldn't be able to take 350+ mark. I'm a Sri Lankan. It's heart wrenching to see the name has fallen and it will never rise back. Sri Lankan cricketing days are long gone my friends. It's governed by one of the most Corrupted institutions, politicians and payers themselves. Players are uneducated, poorly disciplined, mentally unstable where they are cultivated with toxicity everyday by their institutes.

If you saw Rohit’s reaction after loosing the toss, he was glad to bat first since that is what he had done had he won the toss as well. And that is exactly what Indians and India as a nation does. Go with a clear agenda, and if it backfires, start from scratch! It’s not a comment on which is better or worst, it’s a comment on the mindset of a country.
I am not sure what issues De Kock had, but pitches being tailored to suite the home condition is a major part of every single tournament in crickets history. Why are there green pitches in Aus/NZ/Sa? Why are there absolutely no pitches across SENA nations that favor spinners?
Also, my Sri Lankan friend, you should not forget that a few years back your own ground staff and cricket board members were banned for doctoring pitches.
My statement about the condition of the Sri Lankan cricket was because it literally showcases the current situation there. I am a person who believes that sports is one of the best way to judge how the country is functioning and what the mindset of that country is. Sri Lanka was a super power in cricket from 94-2013. It correlated to the growth and development that the government was inducing. Yes you had civil war and political issues, but the country as a whole was still progressing. In the last 4-5 years, you would know better than anyone, that the government has really disappointed it’s citizens and had been on the verge of bankruptcy. The same can be seen with the cricket board.
I know it must be hard for every Sri Lankan brothers going thru these tough times, but a little bit of introspection can go a long way.

Let's be real. There's no chance for Sri Lanka reaching their former glory. Too many issues to tackle. SL cricket is a mess right now and the major reason for that is Sri Lankan politics as you correctly identified. Politics ruin everything. Lanka has one of the most corrupted political systems in the world where all the corrupted politicians are spread across major parties and they are good friends with each other. So always the corrupted will get into power and they support and help each other. How can you expect a better outcome under such circumstances? Every other team will overtake them. We are yet to see the rock bottom for Sri Lankan cricket.
