    I adore this work, and adore Bernard Haitink, and am so grateful that one of the greatest conductors ever, recorded so many of Vaughan Williams's works. I am also deeply saddened of the passing, today, of Bernard Haitink. Thank you, maestro for your sheer brilliance, and for helping give life to this incredible work, and for illuminating so much light through the darkness. Rest in eternal light.

    Bruh in the third movement he fully orchestrated the full organ if there wasn't one available. Master of orchestration right there, I'm done

    The opening soprano solo is kind of other-worldly; would make a great score for a science fiction movie. Beautiful performance. Thank you for posting.

      He actually used this music of the film "Scott of the Antartic" (but it's not a Scifi movie)

      I think the reason that came to mind is because it sounds like the monolith music in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

      The film SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC came first. He then created this symphony out of those elements and added some new ones.

    Here, the antarctic is portrayed as an alien but truly beautiful world… one containing both life and death, thanks to the truly experimental and riveting scoring of RVW.

      Which you would know if you had read the score and listened more carefully.

    It's insane that you matched the sheet music to the recording, so I can know what it looks like to perform this piece and flip through the pages at the same time. Well done.
    PS this song is the soundtrack to my virginity, when people ask me what it's like to be celibate I play them Antarctica.

    some movement and some passage (don't know which parts) in this symphony was used as background music by Stanley Kubrick and his production team on the set of 2001: ASO to help Keir Dullea act during the shooting of star gate scene when David Bowman arrives at the different alien worlds after traveling through the worm hole or something.

    • @tombonespilbo
      @tombonespilbo 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None of this Symphony was used in 2001 ASO - the composers for that film were Ligeti, Johann and Richard Strauss and Khachaturian.
      Vaughan Williams didn't even feature.
      Also this symphony was taken from the music that RVW wrote for Scott of the Antarctic.

      I stand corrected, I did not realise that it was used in earlier drafts of the film before Kubrick dropped it.

      You gotta be kidding me. The percussion alone is innovative; the use of marimba, bar chimes, cymbals and bells is super creative, not to mention the blasting concussion of the pipe organ 3/4 of the way through! This Brit composes more like a Russian. Great stuff.
