Hi, can someone explain why 33:50 is a draw? are all other king moves leading to a draw as well? for example if he went to the left side of the board with his king
I think it’s because if Daniel moves his king to the left, then black’s pawn on h4 can promote, and then black would have easy checkmate. So basically by the point you timestamped Daniel’s options are draw or lose.

I was watching Danya's stream when this match came up spontaneously and it might be the best thing I've ever seen on twitch. Even after watching it for the second time, I'm still blown away at how good Danya is against a super GM like Nepo. It's insane! Nepo is ranked FOURTH in world! One day, I'm hoping, Danya will be invited to an online super tournament the way Sam Shankland was. I don't know exactly how they decide which sub 2700s get included, but they should definitely hook Danya up with an invite sometime!
Its pathetic to watch him at the one hour mark point out the winning knight jump. Saying he put his all into. He never calculated anything. He even missed the the rook coming up and pinning the pawn. He thought super GM Nepo would just what ? Give away a free knight and lose the game.
Can someone please explain why he didn't take the knight with the queen at 52:18 ? I can see there is a discovery on the queen bit I don't see how it could harm him. To me it is a free knight.
He's ranked about 100 in the world, and 14th in the US, so he does play a lot of events, and I think plays with the us chess team? But he's not quite good enough in long time controll events to win much vs the top 10 players in the world very often. So although he could place well at any event, he is currently making a lot more money casting those events, and streaming with all the fame he gets from being a caster, and from coaching big streamers. I mean would you rather have a 1/50 chance of winning big at an expensive chess event, or just cast it and have a 100% chance of making a lot of money. I'm sure it hurts on some level to not be playing as much, but it makes sense from a career standpoint, and we might see him plaiyng in more stuff at some point, probably after covid. Chess.com is also investing quite a lot in making chess more fun to watch to lure in all the new pogchamps people, so I'm sure he's paid well by multiple different sources to not actually attend the best events in the world as often as he could.
Somebody already gave a pretty good answer but I want to add another consideration that can obscure the true skill level difference. Consider the perspective and experience of these top 5/10 players. Every game they play, their opponent is focused and giving let's say 90-95% effort level. These super GMs are likely playing anywhere from 25-95% effort level. It's just a casual game for them.
I believe he's referring to Hikaru actually. I remember there was a clip of him complaining about how Hikaru gets impatient when someone needs a break and how Hikaru himself leaves matches without warning or smth like that, I don't remember exactly
If Qxc3 then black plays kxe5 which opens the attack on the queen from the rook on c8. If white move the queen to b2 then black plays kxf3 which wins whites queen because first white had to deal with the check from the knight and then the blacks bishop on g7 will capture whites queen on b2. A different line is after queen takes the knight on c3 and then black again plays nxe5 then white plays qe2 instead, now black plays nxd3, gxf3 and then blacks bishop can take whites rook on a1
Exactly what Nathan said. Conversely, if bishop takes bishop first, renewing the threat Nxc7, then white has significant counterplay with the queen, knight, and rook aiming at his uncastled king.
Do you need all three types of games (classic, rapid, blitz) at 2700 to be a Super Grandmaster? Or just one of them? You're pretty close on all of them.
Hmm... In that last game, why sac the knight and not the bishop? Doesn't Daniel always say that the queen and knight are the most effective mating duo? Was it because black still had his dark square bishop?
