    Very accurate observation and spot on opinion. I started shooting weddings with Nikon system about 7 years ago. Since last year, it's just the old EM1 and Panasonic GX85. My clients have never complained about noise or depth of field. They are more concerned about the precious moments and this is what I delivered. Initially I was concerned about what other people think when I go shooting with tiny cameras and lenses. To those who are sceptical especially fellow photographers and those with expensive phones who always gets in my way, I just show my portfolio and ask them if it's good enough for my clients. Anyway, m43 system is great.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is true, showing portfolio is the most crucial part, when you show that your work is good, people won't question what camera or lens you are using!

  • @TheSquishySnail

    By the way, I followed your advice during the photo sessions about capturing the moment and not worrying too much about the iso noise. So for my uncle’s 70th birthday, while I didn’t get perfect photos but with a little cropping and other post-processing work, I got some great moments that made my aunt and uncle happy. 😁

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks, and I am glad I helped out a little. The uncles and aunties won't worry about technical perfection. What they want to see, as you have put it correctly, are moments and memories! I am happy to hear that you managed that well. Keep shooting.

    Great video Robin. I went through your older blog post on wedding photography and that inspired confidence in my system. I just did my first wedding shoot three weeks ago with an EM-10 II as the main camera and the 25mm f1.8 for the majority of the photos and I am impressed by the speed and overall performance of the camera and lens.

    Hey Robin, just shot a wedding a week ago with the EM1 Mark II. Such a reliable workhorse for weddings. The Autofocus was dead on reliable, especially the face detect which was helped me out a lot capturing critical moments of the bride and groom during the wedding.
    And lower light situations was not really a problem since I was using flash (aren't all wedding photographers supposed to?), ISO was never really above 800, flash sync for mechanical shutter tops out at 1/250, more than enough for to catch wedding moments. I dont see why anyone cant do weddings with MFT really.

      @Mohamad,
      It's a matter of taste. Our wedding photographers never use flash. They say flash has two disadvantages: it attracts attention to the photographer, while they want to be invisible to capture the moments as they were, and it makes the lighting less natural. They shot the whole wedding with Sony A7iii with great results. During our first dance they had to crank the ISO up to 12800 and the noise became visible, but I prefer that to the flat or unevenly lit images taken with flash.

    Exact on point about getting the moment. I never had a problem being recognized as the photographer using my Olympus gear. I was a guest at a wedding and all I had was my E-M10 with my flash unit, 14-150mm lens and a 3rd party grip and people thought I was the photographer. The photographer that was there didn't use flash, so out of respect for her I didn't either. At the wedding I was shooting at 1600 1/40-1/60 and sometimes bumped it up to 3200. The reception I actually had to shoot 6400 to keep it above 1/60. Using that lens and ISO, was it always sharp, low noise and background blur? No, but nailed the moment and they loved them.

    More people need to see this, my camera of choice is the a7riii, but when I need to pack light, my em1ii is a no brainer, I've gotten incredible results and have absolutely no problem with DR, and though it's more difficult to get super shallow depth of field, it's not impossible, the lenses I have for the system can easily get me my desired amount.

    Yes, I shoot Fuji and Panasonic/Olympus. I just recently got the OMD-EM1 The Panasonic has an issue with Godox flashes. It works most of the time, but has inconsistent results and I often have to power down the camera and turn back on. Godox has a note about Panasonic cameras may not be fully compatible. So far the Oly seems to work fine just like my Fuji. I now will be using the Oly and I love the features like live composite. Looking forward to high res mode and hoefully ND filter. I actually got some images from my M43rds at my last wedding that were some of my favorite. Use fast lenses and you'll be fine. I am eager to see what the Oly OMD EM 1 mk3 will come out with. I would love to see it have most of the features as the 1MX. Don't need the sports features just the ND and hand held high res mode, etc. Seriously will consider getting the mark3. I can say that shooing with my Fuji is great but it does wear you down with the heavier lenses. And the camera is heavier too. When I was a lot younger shooting the heavy Canon DSLRs was fine. But, in my 50s now, I really like the idea of M43rds. The quality to great and I never get comments like oh the noise or look it's not full frame. In fact, when I switched from using my Canon 5D mk2, I immediately saw an improvement in how my images looked with my M43rds.

    I shoot birds with mainly the E-M5 II and the AF has caused me to miss quite a few shots actually... This is probably less of a problem for wedding shoots but still noteworthy. The E-M1 II that I borrowed for a few weeks has had less focusing issues. It's especially noticeable in poorly-lit surroundings where the E-M5 II will just fail to lock focus on pretty much anything whereas it just works with the E-M1.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Both E-M1 and E-M1 Mark II have phase detect AF, depending on which AF modes you use, the phase detect AF working in conjunction with contrast detect will give you much better AF performance in comparison to contrast detect AF only in E-M5 Mark II. Relying on contrast, if the scene has insufficient contrast, the AF reliability drops. For weddings, we do have to deal with super low light situation where people do move constantly. Say, wedding by the beach at night. E-M1 Mark II (with use of F1.2 PRO) can allow AF performance down to -6EV light level.

    Hei Robing. great video. I am from Portugal and I love my Olympus OMD. Whith the new firmare 3.0 this machine now can be better with a new log for video and better focus. Usualy I use in my job (university of aveiro) the other system (canon 6d II, 60d, etc) but when I use my Olympus I prefer for a lot of reason: great built, stabilization, small lens, very ergonomic and much more. For video I use a lote and like very much the color and the stabilization (must have for handheld). I will buy soon a cage, monitor and wireless microphone. Do you have any advice? thks you :)

      Thanks for the kind words, glad that you are making use the Olympus OM-D, and doing more with it. However, I am not a videographer, I don't do a lot of video, so sorry this is something that I cannot help you with! I am sure you can get your answers with better qualified Olympus users who are more experienced with video shooting.

    Hello Robin, thank you for this great video! I am going to be photographing in my friends wedding this summer. My first wedding photography, I'm not a professional. I just ordered the 25mm 1.2 Pro lense. It would be nice to know which lense did you use in all of these photos in this video 😊

    I love M43. What I like a lot is the super optical quantity of the lenses. For instance the 45mm f/1.2 is one of the sharpest lenses you can get. When I blow up the photos I often see better photos than 24mp cameras. However I think Olympus has been sleeping for a while. The autofocus is not as good as other brands with Sony leading. The EVF resolution is far below standard. We have not seen upgrades in the existing OMD cameras for a while. That is disappointing. Hope that we will see some new upgrades in 2019.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you sure the AF is not as good as others? Have you tried the E-M1X or E-M1 Mark II after the new firmware 3.0 upgrade? I'd say it is one of the best in the market currently, sitting at professional grade. While the EVF resolution is low, Olympus maintains low latency (no lag), high refresh rate aimed for sports shooters.

    I just stumbled on this video and I'm really thinking about this camera. What camera were you using to film the portions you were speaking into the camera?

    Im not wedding photographer now but last ten years im, during those time im using Nokin and Tamron lenses.
    Recently I purchase a Sony A6400 for my TH-cam , I'm happy with the video results but I'm not happy with the Stabilizer. Even I use the lens with OSS. Those 6400 I use Sigma 16mm 1.4 lens whitch I love so much.
    I thought to change to olympus system because I heard Olympus stabilizer is great, I thingking to get E-M1 M2.
    Its there any possibility that I still can use my
    Sigma 16mm f1.4 Sony E Mount on E-M1 m2?

    Robin, could you do a comparison between the 45mm f1.2 and the f1.8? Would the f1.8 be good enough for professional portraiture?

    Hi Robin. have you tried 45 1.2? don't you prefer 1.2 instead of 1.8? I have both (I'm not a professional) and it shows! Greetings

    I have been using the OW for a while now. Find it fairly useful even
    though I already have other processing software e.g. Affinity Photo,
    etc. as well. I still use the OW occasionally as it is the very first
    processing software I started learning post processing. In fact, you
    have highlighted using a few option which I had not explored with.
    Thanks. BTW, I am an Olympus user/lover since late 70s. I have OMD
    EM1 and lately bought a Pen-F. My main interest now is taking bird.
    Just wanting to know is Micro 4/3 suitable for this type of photography?
    My birding friend is using an APS-C sensor camera with excellent
    result. I am just finding my shots as good as his in the detailing.
    Obviously, he is using 150-600Sigma lens and mine is just a 100-300
    Lumix lens, which he can have much better reach to the subject than I
    can have. Is the the reason that my shot lacking details in this sense?
    Thanks again.

    Hi Robin,
    I was so inspired by your videos that I got the OM-D M5 II😊
    How would you compare it to the M1 II?
    I know the M1 is the PRO lineup but I never see you using any of the "PRO" features in your videos. So basically my question is, would you not get the same image quality with the M5 II?

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      E-M5 Mark II is a great camera. However, E-M1 Mark II is newer, and more capable. Improved sensor, more capable Truepic 8 processing, Cinema 4K shooting, superior AF for both video and stills, better IS, and more. Of course it is not fair to compare, since E-M1 Mark II is newer. If I have an E-M5 Mark II i'd gladly use it and get fantastic results too. So keep shooting, and enjoy photography!
