    I've watched the digger start a few times now, it makes me laugh every time :-), old machines built to last are always more fun than modern stuff, my 2CV is 42 years old and a complete joy to drive and to work on, really enjoying what you do Kris, we'll be booking a tour soon if we may.

    I remember watching your earlier videos as you pounded tires with a sledgehammer, thinking you were building a fort in the woods and now look at you! Well done, buddy! I just admire your resilience and and craftsmanship so much. Makes me wish I could run across "the pond" and help you.

    I make sure it’s warm out when you uncoil that pipe. Otherwise it will be a nightmare to handle.

      surprisingly the whole thing used about 5-7L of diesel looks way worse than it is, and it only smokes like that for about 20 seconds. then it clears up a bit.

    For cold starts on an old digger like that my dad used to light a couple of sheets of newspaper and allow the air intake to suck in the flame, started those babies right up it did!

  • @gonzo_the_great1675
    @gonzo_the_great1675 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Someone suggested using burning paper on the inlet manifold.
    I used to do a similar trick to start the Perkins engine in my old LandRover. Take off the pipe to the air intake and use a small burning rag dipped in diesel. Let it crank and breath in the flames for 5 sec. Then withdraw the flames, so it could get some air, and touch the throttle. Worked even in the coldest winters.
    Though you should have seen the looks I got in Tesco's car park!
    Don't use that easystart spray. It decokes the bores and you lose compression.

  • @buffplums

    Your old digger starting up is like the old class 37 diesel locomotive startups in cold weather

  • @MattsAwesomeStuff
    @MattsAwesomeStuff 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At idle, the alternator on your car is basically doing nothing. It'll be at 14v, but piss-all for current is flowing. If you want to add energy you have to give it some revs. And, not much point unless the batteries on Mr. Digger are dead. Just hook it up to one of them, leave a stick on the gas pedal to hold it to a medium rev, and then try starting the diesel. If it has energy to start, it's good, if not, 10 minutes on idle isn't going to do anything. If it's cold, diesels are just going to chug like that until the block is warm enough to not thermally snuffing out the ignition no matter what you do. I agree with the other guy about adding a tiny 24v (or 30v) solar panel to the roof and directly tying it to the battery. Energy will just trickle in and keep it topped up, nothing else fancy needed.

    I've started old diesels with a burning rolled up newspaper held down the air intake while shorting across the solenoid terminals with a screwdriver before now. Not for the fainthearted, but it worked when there was no alternative.

    • @Jinguapingi
      @Jinguapingi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What does shorting the solenoid terminals do ? I thought that diesels didn't have spark plugs ? Thanks

    • @mattwoodproperty
      @mattwoodproperty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frankvidi it doesn’t do anything.... the starter motor must’ve been knackered, and the newspaper does nothing useful either..... what a useless comment

    • @TwiztedKnibbz2010
      @TwiztedKnibbz2010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the news paper adds heat but shorting terminals is a useless thing to do lol

    • @bren106
      @bren106 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Shorting across the terminal is the only way to spin the starter when you are on your own and your f***ing arms are a couple of feet too short to reach the key start. It's not my comment that was useless, just your ability to understand why it was necessary that is useless.
      Incidentally bridging a solenoid would do nothing to solve a knackered starter motor.

    Watched all of the videos about the house and hydro elektric. To get rid of the sand, just take the Water out of the stream, build a little pool and take the Water from the top, so sand and debris could sattle down. And man, impressiv Work!

    • @KrisHarbour
      @KrisHarbour  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the problem with that is i would loose some head and loos some power. so what i need is a tank that is pressure rated. that way the sand can separate without loosing pressure.

    Cant believe you own a bloody digger !
    Just a suggestion, maybe get a 24v solar panel on the roof of the digger so you can just forget about the batteries knowing they will be fully charged.
    Also you could put a silicone heat pad on the oil sump and leave it on for a hour or so before starting it to help it warm up a bit faster, getting a bit OTT though.

    • @KrisHarbour

    I've seen EVERY video you have ever posted mate, but I think that's only the second time the green beast has been fired up. (Making the lake was the other one?) Maybe trade it in for a old tractor with forks perhaps? It would have made shifting that pipe easier & it will certainly make ploughing the vegetable patch a ten minute job in future. :-)

      this thing is older them me by quite a long way .and it was -1 degrees. im surprised it started as well as it did. sometimes people make a fire under old machines like this just to get some heat in to them so they will start.

    Wow, I think that might be the slowest I've ever heard an engine cycle.

    Give your glow plugs more time to heat, 15-20 sec, start easier and less smoke.

      mate, this thing has no ignition, i have to just rub two cables together that short the starter. no glow plug warming poshness.

      old gear like that doesn't have glow plugs or any pre heat systems

      How would they work in sub zero weather? Or they only meant for a warmer climate? Diesels here all have some sort of pre-ignition, either glow plugs, or wicks, otherwise when its -40c they are useless. Also block heaters.

      If you grab the head of an air compressor it gets pretty warm same for the head of the diesel it gets warm just turning it over but its slow also why it kind of started but was just chugging over till it developed enough heat to run properly

      If you go find a really old tractor or any diesel i think sort of pre 50s even there, there wont be any glow systems maybe even later i really dont think it was until they used diesels in cars/4wd that they had glow plugs

    Most of that Smoke was merely Steam rising off a Cold Engine.
