  • I come to the place where I believe the Woodstock '99 festival was held. It was on the site of the former Griffiss Air Force Base, east of Rome, New York. The site has changed and redeveloped over the years, as an airport now sits on it.
So as far as the accuracy of the location, I was not able to find maps of the festival but some websites provided coordinates of where it actually was. I went to the large parking lot off Hangar Road (as you're headed to the airport) and I found it to be somewhat precise. But festival-goers are welcome to clarify.

I'm surprised that the tipped over sound tower is still there.

The saddest moment for Rome, NY, was when they closed down Griffis AFB. I when I was a kid, going to the base when my dad's retired Army buddy was in town. Years later, I went to the base when I was on active duty. Woodstock was supposed to be a financial shot in the arm for Rome. The base closing was devastating to Rome's economy. I wanted to go, but because of my work schedule, I ended up watching some of it on pay per view. When they started to burn things, we went to the top of a hill and watched from miles away. Woodstock 99 ruined it for future Woodstocks. My brother worked on the old base and had a special pass so he could get to work. Poor planning, lack of security, greed... what could go wrong.

Wow, thanks for sharing from a local's side of the story. It would've been sad to see all the burning and stuff, especially from miles away

What do you want to know ?? I grew up in Utica about 15:miles east of Rome . I had a DOD security clearance at the base in the late 1970's working for a contractor from CA in support of the development of the Air Launched Cruise Missile being developed at Griffiss . I'm sure no one is telling you the truth . It doesn't surprise me . That white building behind you is Rome Air Development Center. A quasi government facility . I could tell you things that would curl
your hair that no one will ever discuss truthfully of what and why of what happened at the Woodstock festival . Maybe we could chat sometimes . And aliens aren't involved .🤪👽
