I've listened to this piece for 20 years and it's so nice to see it actually performed. My kids thought I was crazy but when Drum and Bass came along they finally understood.

I listened to this many times over many years. I love the sound. It is like flowing water. I can’t imagine how difficult this is to perform.

I know a pro musician that has played Reich in performance. Repeating a phase for many bars then taking say 23 bars rest! Frightening concentration is needed to play his stuff well. These undergrads manage it really well!
My thoughts exactly. Any old douche can get up and do the squealy thing on the electric guitar and wing it from there, but this.... This takes fucking focus.
And any young douche can tell you about what any old douche can do....

Yes it is hard to play this music, but to play electric guitar (or any instrument) well takes a lot of skill
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't take skill to create
It's extremely difficult, if one marimba change the rythym slighlty in one bar...
They all end up in care homes too frightened to order cocoa.
When you hear other instruments like a bass and drums into this NOT FOUND IN STAGE then you realize that such piece is simply magical.

Reich is a genius possibly bordering on Bach in polyrhythmic innovation. I have enjoyed music, but not immediately entranced and sedated to it. I've only discovered him last year and since then I've been mesmerized. His music seems more relevant today in our cluttered, noisy existence. Minimalist works in general too including Richter and Glass provide an alternate space of clarity in music and an idea of different spatial realities as opposed to the constant angst and emotion characteristic in romantic works that is too human-centered in my opinion and to which I now prefer.
That’s also the reason why I love his work.

What I love most is coming into a room and hearing the same piece seemingly played from a totally different angle until it slowly gets "back in synch".

同じフレーズが一定時間続くかと思えば、小さな変化が時々起こり、変化が次の変化を呼び覚ます様子は、自然界の様相さながらのように思えます。It seems like the same phrase continues for a certain amount of time, but small changes occur from time to time, and each change evokes the next change, just like in the natural world.
Who cares about the technique or the tempo, the sound is amazing. These guys have worked dead hard and done themselves proud. This performance is something to aspire to!

I LOVE THE SOUND OF THESE MARIMBAS. SOMETHING PRIMITIVE YET PURE AND VIRGIN. LIKE PHILIP GLASS IT ALWAYS HAS NEW ENERGY THROUGH THE NOTES SEEM TO REPEAT.
I come back and listen to this often. It's I think my favorite performance of Six Marimbas I've come across. You all have a strong understanding of the dynamics and how to work together within dynamic ranges. The (very occasional) mistakes make it more real to me. Such a fabulous job! Makes me think of my time in music school, and I wish that our faculty had been as interested in letting us do pieces like this!
I composed a masterwork entitled "Music for 7,654, 321 Marimbas and 1 accordion".
While this may be the greatest composition in history, we are still clearing a Brazilian rainforest to construct the marimbas before it can be heard.
I love how every rhythm starts and then proceeds to continuously go though modified sequence after another until the entire rhythmic pattern has changed into a completely new melody and phrase.
Just love this presentation. Listened many times.

Exactly the same! I put on some Philip Glass while I was working on something, then TH-cam carried on with this. I would NEVER have chosen it myself. Now I've favourited it and will wear it out, I don't doubt. Wonderfully exciting new sounds.
This is AMAZING! I used to play this instrument! Actually forgot how versatile the sound is and how naturally rhythmic it is. I am truly glad someone is still playing this!

Every time I watch this, I think the dude second from the right looks like Arnold Horshack from Welcome Back Kotter.
This is great focusing music, and does a great job of blocking out distractions and getting me in the zone for writing college papers and such. A lot of Reich's music is, in fact... Music for 18 Musicians is another favorite of mine, along with Sextet. Reich's music just kind of fades into the background, and I mostly forget it's even playing.
The fact that you forgot it was even playing is a good thing. For example, Minecraft - Volume Alpha, by C418. That's what makes Minecraft's soundtrack so memorable, as you forget that it was actually playing.

I heard Andre talk about Reich on Rick Ruben's podcast! I see references to Reich popping up all the time with musicians I admire. It's amazing how much influence this guy has had.

I would just like to say that you are epic.
I first discovered the Six Marimbas. Someone pointed out Six Pianos to me: "It's like the mist is removed". Also beautiful, actually incomparable. I still prefer the Marimba version because of the overtones.

Absolutely fantastic. This must be sooooo difficult to perform. Steve Reich at his very best.
I've played the guitar version of this for 6 guitars, and Nagoya Marimbas for 2 guitars. No matter what you play it on, it is extremely difficult. It requires absolute focus, and very relaxed technique (esp. to not get a repetitive stress injury!)

One of Reich's percussionist friends thought it would be cool if it was re-scored for marimbas instead of pianos. Both versions of the piece are published.
Well Reich definitely owes him one, cuz the marimba version is WAY cooler IMO.

To me, the player at the far right is playing to forcefully - in other versions, the part around 6:30 is a smooth and melodic way of modulating, and introducing the second part. And from 6:51 onwards, the second player from the right is giving too much emphasis, to my ears. I'm so particular about it because this very minutes mean so much harmony, even comfort to me. I've known the piece since I've been twenty or so. I really love Reich's music, almost every one of his many compositions.
