Same here. I'm 67 years old. We grew up with the same music. I finally got to see Kansas live at Mohegan Sun casino many years ago. They were outstanding! Steve Walsh was with them and his voice was outstanding! I had thought he would have lost a step or two with his age and what he had been through, but NOPE! He was so good!
@@jameshowland7393 - I first saw Kansas on the Leftoverture tour in 1975 at the Masonic Hall in Detroit, Mi. Great sounding hall - they were amazing...
Yes, from the 70's, when the greatest rock bands were putting out one great album and then another, and then another, great album. I know, I bought them all. I was in my twenties. I was 18 to 29 years old during 70's. What a wonderful time to be alive, with all the fantastic music.
This song is very well known from the Supernatural tv series starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Sam and Dean Winchester - "Saving people, hunting things, the family business"
I was in junior high school when this came out. I am 57 yrs od now and this is still one of my favorite songs. I listen to it every night at work on my pay list. Never gets old. Great reaction beautiful.
"I think I've heard of a band called Kansas". lol. Kids these days, I'm feeling so old. This was one of their biggest songs Millie. I wouldn't call this prog, I'd put this into the category of 70's rock. The best decade for rock bands there ever was.
This song is definitely among their less proggier tunes. Though, it does have some proggy elements, messing with the time signatures. That being said, Kansas was definitely a prog band, (not that you said they weren't) with much of their catalog being very progressive.

I saw Kansas 4 times over the years, the first time, they played at my high school about 3 years before this album was released! This was an amazing song, and incredibly, it was composed by Kerry Livgren (the blonde guitarist & piano player) overnight. The band was about to leave for the recording studio from their rehearsal hall, and Kerry told the band about this new song, They spent a couple of hours learning it, went to record it, and it was their first really big hit. While Kansas was an amazing Prog band, this song really wasn't Prog, at least not for them. The big guy, with the big hair & beard was named Robbie Steinhardt (RIP) who was a terrific singer, and an incredible violinist. His voice, combined with Steve Walsh (the organist & lead vocalist) really worked so well together. Kansas is still touring, though the only original members are Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitarist wearing white.) After this album, they began touring as the opening act for Queen, and they became a really huge band in the late 70s and early 80s.
Not quite. They were about to LEAVE the studio, getting ready to pack up, when Livgren walked in with the song. They laid it down and could not believe what they had. They were so tight because of their Record label, who had them on the road almost non-stop early on trying to build a base.
Saw them, must have been 76, when they were touring promoting Leftoverture. This song, Miracles Out of Nowhere, Magnum Opus, were on that. And The Wall, a few years before Pink Floyds concept album
Same album had "Dust on the Wind", complete contrast to this one. Yet epic in its own right. I was working at our campus radio station, my own show, and ran the record (before CDs) and reviewed the new music and programmed them for air play. This unknown album came in over summer break. I gave one listen, and immediately picked Carry On and dust on the wind for rotation. Months later, I had to make sure they were back in rotation when the album went big nation wide. I was so puffed up about myself..😮
@@michaelseay9783 I checked, you're right. Looking at the dates, both came out while I was at KUGR. Maybe that explains my old guy memory blur 🤔 Thanks for the correction!
Prog rock heaven. Live they were an incredible tight band. Saw them with an unknown Cheap Trock opening. Blew the roof off. RIP Robbie Steinhardt the redhead playing the tambourine. Wicked fiddler and vocalist.
Kansas played at my college homecoming weekend in 1976. It was the LOUDEST damned concert I ever heard. They played in our small gym, which seated 3500 for basketball in those days. We all walked out after several songs, because our ears were in serious pain! Now, I loved this band, and I love loud music still, at 67, but damn! I hate it when my ears bleed. We went back to my dorm, next door to the gym on our small campus, and opened the window. They sounded pretty good there! I hope the band can still hear. Their sound man obviously couldn't, or he would have turned it down. I probably heard 100 concerts from '73 to '77, but none came close to that loudness. It was overwhelming.
I really enjoyed seeing you appreciate everything about this. Especially the "omg don't let it be over!" - there is so much here but it's still not enough!
The “tambourine” guy was also their violinist and other lead vocalist, Robbie Steinhardt (RIP passed away in 2021) talented man! Deep rabbit hole here of musical greatness Suggestions from Kansas (from a Big Kansas fan): Song for America Miracles out of nowhere (Robbie sings lead here) Cheyenne Anthem (another Robbie lead) Magnum Opus (Prog epic!!) Closet Chronicles On the Other Side Hold On Lonely Wind (very pretty deep cut) Glimpse of Home Crossfire Icarus Icarus II I could go on. Deep cuts are always best Note: do the original audio versions of above or official video Steve Walsh (the lead singer) was probably top 5 of rock singers in his prime. Later on he lost a lot of his voice unfortunately. There are live clips from the 90’s & 2000’s that painfully document this Kerry Livgren (the blond guitarist) was their principle songwriter. His lyrics are a spiritual journey. He eventually became a born again Christian in 1980. Reflected in the song “Crossfire “ Also note: lots of requests for Dust in the Wind. Pretty song but very stripped down & mellow. Features Robbie on violin Was a Huge hit for them They are still touring. Only Rich Williams (the bushy haired guitarist) and Phil Ehart (the drummer) remain but they have a talented lineup of musicians with them. Sounds like the old band and then some! Worth seeing if they come to an area near you Good one here, Millie!
Phil has stopped touring after a massive heart attack - although he has never said he won't rejoin them after his rehab is over. He still manages them, however.
Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Robbie, R.I.P. (The Tambourine Man) is also one of the lead vocalists, but an amazing violin player too. Listen to 'Dust in the Wind' or 'Lightning's Hand' or 'Point of Know Return' or 'Closet Chronicles' or 'The Wall' for more Kansas goodness. Chris
On their album they go into The.Wall next. You should listen to that next, it's a little different but is so good after hearing Carry on. Such a beautiful and talented band.
First view of your channel Millie, subbed! Great reaction vid! I urge you to listen to their entire catalog, they're so incredible & intense! I never knew him, but grew up in same small city where the singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh grew up in. I was a freshman when he was a senior in our HS. Got to watch him in all of his early local bands. He was exceedingly talented even in his early days, plus a real monster on his Hammond b3 organ. His local band prior to the formation of Kansas was 'White Clover', & they were balls to the walls killer as well! Thanks Millie.
This album which is called Left Overture has a treasure trove of songs on it as well as the next album called Point of No Return. Begin checking those ones out you will not be disappointed
Kansas is one of the bands of that era that I've seen more times than I can count. They were always that good if you want to check out something a little more mellow with deep meaning words, the next tune to check out would likely be dust in the wind. The guy who sings and plays the tambourine plays the violin in that one. I remember seeing them perform it live when it first came out, and the violin player came up through a fog covered stage playing the violin for the violin part.
Hey 👋 Millie, You’ll be diving down one awesome rabbit hole with these guys!😁I first started listening to these guys when I was in junior high school in the mid seventies and I can honestly say that their music 🎶 (and lyrics) completely changed my entire outlook on on life as well as music 🎼 They had a “huge” influence on me at that very turbulent time in everybody’s life and really shaped the way I approached music as well as life! If I had to pick one song of theirs that sums it all up, It would have to be “Magnum Opus”without a doubt! I think it’s their crowning achievement at the height of their powers in my humble opinion. It encompasses everything that they were capable of in one song! A true masterpiece by one of my most beloved bands 🫶✌️🤟❤
Hey 👋 Millie 😃 Thank you for the ❤️ I think you’re one of the “coolest cutest” young ladies on TH-cam!! And thank you as well for taking the time to read my rather “long winded” comment and appreciating what I had to say!🤗That really means alot to an “old head” like me😁😆Here’s another one that I think you’ll like! It’s from the same album as Wayward Son. It’s called “What’s On My Mind”🤔🤯🤣 It’s a great song 🎶 Enjoy👐✌️🫶🤟
That's the music I grew up with. Kansas, Rush, Boston, Queen, Status Quo, Dire Straits, Toto, Kiss, Ac/Dc, Styx, ELO...(where can I stop?) Nice that you discover all that great music from the past (and, if you see my youtube name, Babymetal of course lol). Greets from Germany. Enjoy!
This is one of my Favorite songs!! No matter where you are at when you hear it, want to sing along! I listen to all music , mostly country. But you can not beat Classic Rock, this my feel good vibe
Kansas was formed in 1973... Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitars) being the only founding members left, the band is known for being a prog rock giant... the band's biggest records featured this former singer Steve Walsh ... Kansas changed members over time, and once featured Steve Morse (guitar) who is best known for his work w/ Deep Purple from 1994 to 2021. Kansas' latest album is 'The absence of presence' (2020) w/ Ronnie Platt (lead vocals), Billy Greer (bass + vocals), Tom Brislin (keyboard + vocals)... Other Kansas songs - 'Dust in the wind' ... 'Song for America'... 'Power' ... 'With this heart'... 🔥🤘
First off please don't take this personally Millie, I love your reactions. I'm glad young people are getting to hear and appreciate this great music from the seventies. I grew up in the 70's, 8-18 years old, when all this great music was hitting the air waves. Kansas, Styx, Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, ect. they were all just listed as ROCK. There were no progressive radio stations, there were no progressive sections in the record stores, all this great music was just ROCK. Each and every band back then just had thier own distinct sound, when a song came on you knew who it was by thier sound. People today are always trying to catagorize everything and break it down. Just enjoy the ROCK of the 70's like you do. Thanks and keep it up.
This is REAL prog ! There are so many ideas in one song... Today many bands would make whole album of them. Best example "Magnum Opus". Sounds like Queen, ELP, Yes and god knows who mixed together 😂 Violin, Vibes, kettle drums... Whatever you want !
If you want to hear their prog side try Song For America or Icarus / Borne On Wings of Steel. Also, the tambourine / singer guy also kicks ass on violin and it is a major part of their sound
There are so many songs that they produced that will make you feel the same as you do here. Try "Dust in the Wind", "Point of Know Return", and one of my favorites "Portrait" (He Knew). They were very prolific for a relatively short period of time, but their music was so intense and wonderfully orchestrated. Do some research on them. You won't be disappointed.
Glad to see you discover Kansas!! I'm a bit biased..I'm from and still live in Topeka Kansas/their hometown..To me one of the best bands ever..Live is better!! The Livgren's don't live far from my house and have been fortunate enough to get to meet Kerry and Vicci Livgren..So very nice..Please listen to Two for the Show live album
So cool! Hope Kerry is doin well. He's so insanely talented, writing most if not all of their songs, plus his musicianship. Plus all he went through & thank God miraculously recovered from. I never knew him, but grew up in St. Joe where Walsh grew up. I was a freshman when he was a senior in HS. Got to watch him in all his early bands growing up. Should'a heard White Clover, before Kansas formed, they were kick-ass too. Salute William!
This song was a huge hit when I was a kid. As soon as I heard it on the radio, I went out and bought the vinyl LP. I went to see Kansas in New Haven, CT at a medium sized arena. It was my first concert and the arena was almost sold out but we did get tickets but the seats were actually behind the stage so my brothers and I ended up watching the back of their heads the whole time. Live and learn on seat selection! Point of Know Return gets my vote for the next Kansas song if you decide to try them again.
Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks, CA (God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 300 miles each way with roughly $1 a gallon for gas on bikes. Hell yeah.😎😎 I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" are two other awesome songs from that era 45 years ago. They're still played on classic rock radio. "Surely Heaven waits for you"😇😇😇😇😇😇😇😇
Damn! This song is so good it should last like 40 minutes at least!😂 I love this band, Millie. They are so talented it don't even sound like americans, their prog rock music sounds so british! Great choice and great reaction Millie!
Hi there. Saw this and I had to subscribe to your channel. Kansas, I think really put themselves on the map by doing a song called Dust In The Wind but this particular song is my favourite by them. They actually used this song as the title song for the TV series supernatural. Absolutely fantastic band and thank you so much for doing them on your channel. Please take care and blessings to you from the UK.
Salutations Millie Hippie or Psychedelic Era was late 60's / early 70's. After that, came what is now referred to as 'Classic Rock' and Disco Era. Kansas is totally Classic Rock genre. Anyone that calls them 'Hippie Band' does not know what Kansas was all about. This song is considered to be their best of their Top 20 Best Songs by most Music critics and fans. A 'more chill song' would be a song like 'Dust in the Wind'. You can also listen to 'Point of Know Return', 'Miracles Out of Nowhere', 'Song for America', "All I Wanted', and People of the South Wind'. This is an amazing band.
Check out Miracles Out of Nowhere, Millie. So many great prog rock bands, Kansas, Styx, Rush, Yes, Genesis, the list goes on and on! Welcome to the best music era. 70's rock!

The best explanation I've read is that every section of this song is a "hook". Most songs are a lot of filler around a great hook. Not on this song, they're all hooks.
I had a cassette with Leftoverture on one side and Point Of No Return on the other. I would listen to it all day at work. There isn't a weak song on Leftoverture. It's a masterpiece of epic proportion.

Magnum Opus (Prog epic!!)
Closet Chronicles
On the Other Side
Hold On
Lonely Wind (very pretty deep cut)
Glimpse of Home
Crossfire
Icarus
Icarus II
I could go on. Deep cuts are always best
Note: do the original audio versions of above or official video
Steve Walsh (the lead singer) was probably top 5 of rock singers in his prime. Later on he lost a lot of his voice unfortunately.
There are live clips from the 90’s & 2000’s that painfully document this
Kerry Livgren (the blond guitarist) was their principle songwriter. His lyrics are a spiritual journey. He eventually became a born again Christian in 1980. Reflected in the song “Crossfire “
Also note: lots of requests for Dust in the Wind. Pretty song but very stripped down & mellow. Features Robbie on violin
Was a Huge hit for them
They are still touring. Only Rich Williams (the bushy haired guitarist) and Phil Ehart (the drummer) remain but they have a talented lineup of musicians with them. Sounds like the old band and then some! Worth seeing if they come to an area near you
Good one here, Millie!
Phil has stopped touring after a massive heart attack - although he has never said he won't rejoin them after his rehab is over. He still manages them, however.
Every second of this song is perfect.
Chris
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR CONTENT REACTIONS YOU BRIGHTEN MY DAY EVERYTIME I SEE YOU AND IM SURE THAT GIES FOR ALL YOUR SUBSCRIBERS TO❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you 💜
back in the day Kansas was my absolute favorite band. If you dig this you will definitely dig Boston (more than a feeling, or don't look back)
Drummers dream song! Love playing this!!!!!
Millie knows music!
This is the theme song of the TV series "Supernatural"
All I'mma say is best use of this song is in the "The story so far" recap intro in SUPERNATURAL Hells yeah.🤘💗
This album which is called Left Overture has a treasure trove of songs on it as well as the next album called Point of No Return. Begin checking those ones out you will not be disappointed
It was actually "Leftoverture" (all one word) and Point of Know Return.
I am not sure what "heapiee" is, but most certainly this is ROCK AND ROLL
In 1976 I got to see a concert Kansas and Boston together plus other bands.
Great reaction Millie! This is my favorite song from Kansas! Check out Dust In The Wind next.
The singer with the giant red hair and beard plays a sublime violin on "Dust in the Wind".
I can never choose a fav, they're all so killer, but I sure agree with the rest of your post.
It's the 70's baby....raw talent 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
That's the music I grew up with. Kansas, Rush, Boston, Queen, Status Quo, Dire Straits, Toto, Kiss, Ac/Dc, Styx, ELO...(where can I stop?) Nice that you discover all that great music from the past (and, if you see my youtube name, Babymetal of course lol). Greets from Germany. Enjoy!
This is one of my Favorite songs!! No matter where you are at when you hear it, want to sing along! I listen to all music , mostly country. But you can not beat Classic Rock, this my feel good vibe
Yes hippie, I remember this song like it's still new.
"Portrait/He Knew" is a underrated banger
Boston will blow tour mind!!!
Yes! Anything off the first 2 albums 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great reaction to a Great classic, well done Millie
I thought she was an actual performer doing a review. WHAT A DRAG.
Yes! All that and you have yet to hear the violin on some other tunes...So glad you did this!
Saw them Live in 1976 and 1977 right after this came out. It was the best concerts of my life.
This is REAL prog !
There are so many ideas in one song... Today many bands would make whole album of them. Best example "Magnum Opus". Sounds like Queen, ELP, Yes and god knows who mixed together 😂
Violin, Vibes, kettle drums... Whatever you want !
I'd almost say this is Southern Rock meets Prog rock.
Easily found blasting out of car windows on a Friday night cruise.
Robbie, the tamborine guy plays the violin on many songs. This is a deep rabbit hole. You will love it.
If you want to hear their prog side try Song For America or Icarus / Borne On Wings of Steel. Also, the tambourine / singer guy also kicks ass on violin and it is a major part of their sound
Kansas is a rabbit hole you need to go down!!! Trust me , you will not regret it.
One of the the greatest songs hands down
There are so many songs that they produced that will make you feel the same as you do here.
Hell yeah.😎😎
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's former outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
Ciao Beautiful Millie,
this song reminds me of the TV series "Supernatural"
AND YOU ARE LIVING PROOF OF THIS BLESS YOUR BEUTIFUL SOUL THE I SEE THE JOY AND LOVE YOU FOR EVERY AND ALL THE TIME BANDE YOU REACT TO
Salutations Millie
Hippie or Psychedelic Era was late 60's / early 70's.
70's rock!
Hi from Sheffield Yorkshire England IV ALWAYS SAID THAT YOU ARE BORN WITH THE LOVE OF METAL AND ROCK ITS ENGLAND IN YOUR SOUL
great reaction,,,,gave me so much pleasure to listen to you as a fellow bass guitarist, i can see how much you appreciate the song. its very complend a big challenge to do a coverversion. great song
Thank you so much 💜
Seen these guy's in 1980 at the Summer Nights festival in Darmstadt Germany, 7 bands and Kansas was one of them, along with B.O.C., foreigner, 38 Special, Motorhead, More and one of my favorite bands Iron Maiden.
Dust in the Wind, Point of know Return. Several others. Classic and never goes out of style.
I was in my mid 20’s in the USAF when this album came out. I practically wore it out listening to it.
🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 A classic! Great song! It was played at the end of the final episode for 15 seasons of the also great show Supernatural.
