    Sweet! I've been playing around with roasting cherries this summer - and it's pretty much the same as what you did on the stove top. I've had a jar of them on the go in the fridge all summer. It's great over vanilla ice cream - but I love the sound and look of this cake. Will be trying soon!

    Almond extract is also very compatible with cherries and a good alternative for the kirsch.

      While almond extract is a good substitution for Kirsch, DO NOT add the suggested 2 tablespoons. Almond extract is super strong and if you use too much, it takes on an almost medicinal flavor -- if you substitute it directly for the kirsch and use 2 tablespoons, your cake will be ruined. I'd use a teaspoon at most.

      Thank you for saying this, I did not want to look all over the internet to find alternatives to Kirsch, because I do not want to drink alcohol or have any alcohol flavoring in baked goods like this.

    This is the best chocolate cake I’ve ever made although I don’t add the cherry mixture ever lol I’ve tried a lot of chocolate cake recipes and this one is the best it’s really chocolatey and really rich

    Looks awesome. Darn, I was hoping you were gonna taste it. I love when you correct (edit) yourself, LOL...Don't get me wrong...whipped cream is great, but I always see cakes like this with the ole predictable whipped cream topping. Is it a "crime" to use like a buttercream or similar type of icing/frosting in this application? Now a chocolate cake *with* cherries AND *with* a rich decadent frosting would *really* be over the top in my opinion!!

      Hey, the liquor she was referring to might be Kirschwasser! It's a german liquor. Maybe check the international aisle of your supermarket? Otherwise, the liquor aisle or just amazon.

      i asked for kirsch at the liquor store after seeing it in a couple recipes involving cherries, I had looked through the liqueur section and couldn't find anything. they directed me to kirschwasser, which is a cherry brandy, in the brandy section. i don't know if this is the same thing. tastes great mixed with cola though

      with raspberries you do what she did with the cherries, but don't use the kirsch (i mean, you can, but this flavors mixed might taste a bit weird). raspberries work really well with chocolate :)

    If I half the recipe and bake it in a smaller pan, how long should I bake the cake for?

      aibadotcom if the thickness of the batter is maintained, usually you bake it for the same amount of time. Increase if thicker and decrease if thinner.
