Baritones.....study this man. Study the way he opens his mouth. Study the way he goes deep but not back. He never croons. The brilliance is balanced with almost a bass timbre...although he wasn't a bass. He was a great dramatic baritone. Learn from this great master of vocalism. It is like having 20 lessons just watching him sing.

No. Guelfi didn't have to lip synch; his voice was naturallyhuge . Yes, this a terrific rendition of a difficult aria. He does not disappoint. Another singer worth hearing in this aria is Gaetano Viviani, the superb Barnaba in the La Scala recording of Gioconda in 1930 with the wonderful conductor Lorenzo Molajoli - well worth purchasing (Naxos Historical Recordings). on
E meraviglioso ! What a terrific dramatic baritone voice he has.Almost in the league with the great Bastianini. I am amazed at how forgotten he is where I live (in the US).I suppose he did most of his singing in Italia. Che peccato ! I would have loved to see him on stage.I understand he was an excellent actor. Bravissimo e tante grazie Maestro Guelfi.
It doesn't seem so. He did however appear in the inaugurational season of the Chicago Opera, singing Enrico in "Lucia di Lammermoor" alongside Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano - not a bad production to be a part of!
@@kbhprinsesse Thanks for the information on Guelfi appearing with di Stefano at the opening of the Chicago Opera. I wonder if di Stefano was still in good voice or in his steep decline by that time. I'll try to see if there are any recordings. I love Guelfi's voice. He and Bastianini are my favorite baritones. Thanks again
@@CraigFrancisSoto there's no recording from that performance, but there's a recording with Callas, di Stefano and Panerai from La Scala January 1954 (in extremely bad sound) and one from Berlin September 1955 with the same cast, so you can judge from them :)
This man knew how to access his tremendous resonance. The Italian word "raccolto" means gathered together. He was a genius at gathering his sound into a deep, rich and ringing roar, and then pouring it out in the most impressive way. A great voice is the result of RESONANCE. Not force. When a singer has great resonance...sonority...and color, he is often accused of forcing. No. What we have today are only forced voices...small, ineffective and simply wrong to sing dramatic repertoire.

Actually I noticed just now that Guelfi had a very similar timbre and technique to Jerome Hines!
