I really like how he reinforced the peacock herl body. I knew a guy that seemed like this was the only pattern he ever used...and he caught a ton of fish!
Awesome tye, my most productive nymph and one of my first ties 30 years ago when I started tying. I like the full collar on Matt's rather than the beard I learned. He also did the wing pad like I was taught. I've tried mallard dyed wood duck but no dice, fish didn't like. It's a great fly that can be tied in many different profiles to imitate alot of bugs. Thanks fellas!
I use silver oval tinsel; wire would most likely get lost in the hearl body. Another thing that makes the fly even more effective is to wind a longer (past the bend of the hook) coller and omit the mallard wing case

Although, if I remember correctly, only one of those videos specifically mentions it as "Matt's secret technique". So, you'll have to pay close attention. I've seen every one of his videos and I know for a fact that the secret has been revealed more than once. I won't tell you which videos but I highly suggest you watch them all to find out.
