I airlifted a 21 year old from an Island in the Indian Ocean with the same scenario, except that his lesion did not progress above the fracture and remained a C4/C5 lesion - he did not recover any function. I then formed part of an aeromedical crew that flew him from Johannesburg, S Africa, back to Boston, USA, via London, England. Such a very sad case
It's crazy and sad how many young lifes had been destroyed by just diving into a wave. I've never considered to be dangerous, but there are many tragic examples like him. I hope he can raise awareness at some degree and lead people to be more cautious diving head first into a wave.
If you can still smile then thats a huge impact unlike those who cant feel emotion because of cognitive impairment due to brain problem (Limbic System)
This was beautiful. Thank you Jesus!
Great story of recovery after such a devastating injury.

If he told his mom, “I don’t want to live like this!”, then she should have let him go. That’s why I have an Advanced Directive with a DNR clause.
