Whether it be riding a dragon into the sunset with your friends, or guiding two young boys to the path of diligence for the sake of their kingdom, or even sitting in a cottage in the middle of a tundra, this is absolutely beautiful.

I’m in both boats, and from what I’ve seen of the dream smp community (particularly the part that loves the fanfic everyone’s talking about), I’m actually not too surprised about the music taste. It makes me really happy to see two of my favorite things collide like this, especially because so far everyone seems to be fairly polite/welcoming!

This song means a lot to me. I was raised as a JW and it is very evangelical in that group, a literal cult. It ruined my metal health as a child because of how much death was glorified. I am older and much better now. It's great to see that there are actually songs about leaving toxic religious communities

The Oh Hellos are finally gaining the respect they deserve because of the DSMP fandom yielding great animatics and great fanfics based on their music. Edit: To people discovering this song through the fanfiction, please check out the Oh Hellos' other music!! It's very good and I guarantee if you like this song regardless of the fanfiction, you'll like their other music. I'm a huge fan of the fanfiction, don't get me wrong, and I am not without fault when it comes to discovering a song or band/group via a media source and wanting to comment about it, but I now know how people feel when they have been fans of the song and suddenly people from a popular source (be it a movie, fanfic, whatever) flood the comments. Please respect the original artist. The fanfic author should get respect for writing a beautiful piece, but express your love for it elsewhere. You don't need to flood the comments of a song that, in it's original right, has nothing to do with the fanfiction. Just like the pinned comment says: the Oh Hellos did not write Passerine for a fanfiction.

I enjoyed reading everyone’s story/opinion of what songs meant, but it’s kinda hard to do that now since it’s mainly about the SMP. No hate to the SMP, I like the writing and characters a lot, but reading the comments of some songs are kinda sad since they are filled with DSMP
I’m glad your fandom likes the song. And I don’t want to be a gate keeping tool, but it really feels like some of you aren’t listening to the song. This narrative of recognizing religious violence and your part in it than ultimately losing that faith while fearing what a faithless world means is something that deeply speaks to me and many people. Than to see it only talked about in the context of “ooh fantasy vibes” or fan fiction just feels icky
i understand why that would upset you, and that's completely valid but, music is something that means a lot of different things to different people i'm not denying the original purpose of the song, because i can tell that means a lot to you and i'm guessing it meant a lot to the band themselves considering their origins and what a lot of their songs tend to be about, but two things 1. you have to understand that not everyone's gonna, y'know, understand that from listening to the song, i didn't even get that message until you pointed it out 2. just because they think this and that about the song while you think about it in a very personal light doesn't *invalidate* the original intent of the song and the way you feel about it music means different things to different people, and that's valid
As someone who did find this song a bit before the fix got popular, I understand how you feel. I do wish people would pay more respect to the original intention behind the song’s meaning. But as the person above me mentioned, art is inherently subjective, and can be consumed and interpreted in any and all ways.
I would also like to give an opinion about this. I agree with y'all, and to enhance @fours1524 comment above, people with different mental states and outlook often pay more attention to a song's aspect that they resonate most with. The fandom came through the fan fiction and discovered the song through it, meaning they already have a base idea of what this song means to them. And for those that didn't, they listen more closely to their feelings and mentality that resonates weirdly with the song. Through that, they get different opinions and views that may or may not be contrary to the song. Not to be shallow but the song does have that upbeat that's Decievingly a feel-good. And to you who experienced events that left a deep imprint, you can read the hidden message of the song meant for you and those like you, because you understand more deeply and resonate with it more than most people. But for those who found this song while completely ignorant of their meaning may feel shallow, but the fact that they enjoy the song itself and support it is still valid. Some songs didn't even come as religious to me until the lyrics explicitly mentioned key words. Like the song Creature (it's been a while so I forgot who made the song and I also found it through the Philza Minecraft fandom) , which was also a sort of religious song that I never expected to be religious until I heard keywords from the lyrics. It was an unexpected happiness to because I loved that song and can still share it with my family without being nitpicked for listening to songs with bad influence. (Which, for them, is basically just any song that is not religious or local) For me, Passerine came as a happy reminder that despite people's differences and outlook in life, we can still share happy things and become United for simply having a common liking of one thing. And while we may have different opinions, we can still act cohesively for one goal without invalidating each other's opinions. It was through passerine that I saw all sorts of people that I feel I can relate with. And while it somewhat hit a little close to home when you said that, I can't find it in myself to resonate with you as deeply as I would have a decade ago. (So despite how religious my family is, they can be chill and understanding due to multiple religions and cultures compressed in our community. Right now, no one can force others to change religions there, and converting is completely one's choice. But that's without the factor of parents in play. Then again, they can't be blamed. However, some senior citizens who are widely respected in our country may have traditional thinking due to our history of clashing religions and cultures, so some families who blindly respect our elderly may come across to harsh on children especially when they won't adapt to the times (I felt this on childhood back when most people weren't so inclusive of other c communities.) It just makes me glad and grateful that my family can be understanding and is willing to open themselves to the opinions of others as time goes by.) It's 4 am and I started typing this rant at 3 am something. I might forget this later but if you feel offended, just take it as some one's half asleep and don't know what to do with their life. I don't like going through the trouble of offending and fighting people cuz of opinions but hey, that's exactly why I'd rather go to the internet.
This comment is old but I just wanna say thank you for being kinda the only comment ( towards the top for me at least) to go into the actual meaning of the song. I'm kinda dense when it comes to lyric deciphering so I often look to the comments but they're not very useful here. Also, I agree with you completely. I understand that lots of people find lots of media "second hand", that is, they don't find it from the people who made it, but that fanfic, or song cover, or remix, etc wouldn't even EXIST if the original didn't inspire it, and I feel like people don't recognize and respect that enough. Its very disheartening to see fans be so completely blinded by their love for one thing that they are unable to open themselves up to both loving their fandom, AND discovering the meaning, depth, and care put into the original work. This song is honestly so pretty and it is just very enjoyable overall. This is in my destress playlist and I can't be happier to hear it. Really sounds like a fun adventure song, maybe a little emotional one too, but an overall amazing journey. I can't even begin to say the amount of times I have listened to this song. This song means so much to me as an LGBTQIA+ person who is Christian and came from a traumatic past. Finding out that I was wrong about so many things and that I had hurt so many people broke me, and even to this day, I struggle to fix and heal both the damage I caused to myself and others. I really don't know what will happen when the end comes, and this song strikes a chord deep within me about those fears and worries.
I cannot express how much I love the feeling this song gives me. I love how easily The Oh Hello's seem to capture this kind of medieval vibe, that kind of feeling that makes it so incredibly easy to see yourself running through a grassy field with friends as you waste away your afternoon chasing after the nosy foxes bothering your father's chickens. It's so easy to feel yet so difficult to explain, what a beautiful feeling indeed.

@sachsoup this song isn't written based on a fanfic, the band has made a million references to the Bible and Faith and struggles with religion in their music up to this point. The Fanfic you're referring to was written based on this song it seems like, but saying that this song is based on a fanfiction is SERIOUSLY undervaluing the message. The song is about someone's struggles with faith after discovering those that use faith for their own gain, trying to overcome their shock and anger at the other members of the church because they believe they are truly good despite witnessing horrific acts and inherently evil deeds being carried out by them. "My birds of a kind more and more are looking like, centurions than any little messiah" is a perfect line to illustrate that. It's actually kind of fucked up to reduce it to "OmG FaNfIcTiOn ReAdErs mAdE a SoNg AbOuT iT!!!!1!1" because it really isn't about that at all.

I'm actually really glad that people are coming here from DSMP just because The Oh Hellos are getting more recognition!! I'm glad more people have found their music, through whatever means. As a fan of both The Oh Hellos and the DSMP, it's cool to see people from one fandom kind of adopt songs that fit into it and use them to make amazing art or stories, or even just put their imagination to work.

I’m in both boats, and from what I’ve seen of the dream smp community (particularly the part that loves the fanfic everyone’s talking about), I’m actually not too surprised about the music taste. It makes me really happy to see two of my favorite things collide like this, especially because so far everyone seems to be fairly polite/welcoming!

I am older and much better now. It's great to see that there are actually songs about leaving toxic religious communities

Edit: To people discovering this song through the fanfiction, please check out the Oh Hellos' other music!! It's very good and I guarantee if you like this song regardless of the fanfiction, you'll like their other music.
I'm a huge fan of the fanfiction, don't get me wrong, and I am not without fault when it comes to discovering a song or band/group via a media source and wanting to comment about it, but I now know how people feel when they have been fans of the song and suddenly people from a popular source (be it a movie, fanfic, whatever) flood the comments. Please respect the original artist. The fanfic author should get respect for writing a beautiful piece, but express your love for it elsewhere. You don't need to flood the comments of a song that, in it's original right, has nothing to do with the fanfiction. Just like the pinned comment says: the Oh Hellos did not write Passerine for a fanfiction.

I enjoyed reading everyone’s story/opinion of what songs meant, but it’s kinda hard to do that now since it’s mainly about the SMP. I’m glad your fandom likes the song. And I don’t want to be a gate keeping tool, but it really feels like some of you aren’t listening to the song. This narrative of recognizing religious violence and your part in it than ultimately losing that faith while fearing what a faithless world means is something that deeply speaks to me and many people. Than to see it only talked about in the context of “ooh fantasy vibes” or fan fiction just feels icky

but, music is something that means a lot of different things to different people
i'm not denying the original purpose of the song, because i can tell that means a lot to you and i'm guessing it meant a lot to the band themselves considering their origins and what a lot of their songs tend to be about, but two things
1. you have to understand that not everyone's gonna, y'know, understand that from listening to the song, i didn't even get that message until you pointed it out
2. just because they think this and that about the song while you think about it in a very personal light doesn't *invalidate* the original intent of the song and the way you feel about it

As someone who did find this song a bit before the fix got popular, I understand how you feel. I do wish people would pay more respect to the original intention behind the song’s meaning. But as the person above me mentioned, art is inherently subjective, and can be consumed and interpreted in any and all ways.
I would also like to give an opinion about this. I agree with y'all, and to enhance @fours1524 comment above,
people with different mental states and outlook often pay more attention to a song's aspect that they resonate most with. The fandom came through the fan fiction and discovered the song through it, meaning they already have a base idea of what this song means to them.
And for those that didn't, they listen more closely to their feelings and mentality that resonates weirdly with the song. Through that, they get different opinions and views that may or may not be contrary to the song. Not to be shallow but the song does have that upbeat that's Decievingly a feel-good.
And to you who experienced events that left a deep imprint, you can read the hidden message of the song meant for you and those like you, because you understand more deeply and resonate with it more than most people. But for those who found this song while completely ignorant of their meaning may feel shallow, but the fact that they enjoy the song itself and support it is still valid.
Some songs didn't even come as religious to me until the lyrics explicitly mentioned key words. Like the song Creature (it's been a while so I forgot who made the song and I also found it through the Philza Minecraft fandom) , which was also a sort of religious song that I never expected to be religious until I heard keywords from the lyrics. It was an unexpected happiness to because I loved that song and can still share it with my family without being nitpicked for listening to songs with bad influence. (Which, for them, is basically just any song that is not religious or local)
For me, Passerine came as a happy reminder that despite people's differences and outlook in life, we can still share happy things and become United for simply having a common liking of one thing. And while we may have different opinions, we can still act cohesively for one goal without invalidating each other's opinions. It was through passerine that I saw all sorts of people that I feel I can relate with. And while it somewhat hit a little close to home when you said that, I can't find it in myself to resonate with you as deeply as I would have a decade ago.
(So despite how religious my family is, they can be chill and understanding due to multiple religions and cultures compressed in our community. Right now, no one can force others to change religions there, and converting is completely one's choice. But that's without the factor of parents in play. Then again, they can't be blamed. However, some senior citizens who are widely respected in our country may have traditional thinking due to our history of clashing religions and cultures, so some families who blindly respect our elderly may come across to harsh on children especially when they won't adapt to the times (I felt this on childhood back when most people weren't so inclusive of other c communities.) It just makes me glad and grateful that my family can be understanding and is willing to open themselves to the opinions of others as time goes by.)

Also, I agree with you completely. I understand that lots of people find lots of media "second hand", that is, they don't find it from the people who made it, but that fanfic, or song cover, or remix, etc wouldn't even EXIST if the original didn't inspire it, and I feel like people don't recognize and respect that enough. Its very disheartening to see fans be so completely blinded by their love for one thing that they are unable to open themselves up to both loving their fandom, AND discovering the meaning, depth, and care put into the original work. Finding out that I was wrong about so many things and that I had hurt so many people broke me, and even to this day, I struggle to fix and heal both the damage I caused to myself and others. I love how easily The Oh Hello's seem to capture this kind of medieval vibe, that kind of feeling that makes it so incredibly easy to see yourself running through a grassy field with friends as you waste away your afternoon chasing after the nosy foxes bothering your father's chickens. In all seriousness, Passerine is a beautiful song about coming to terms with the fact that your kinfolk are flawed, sometimes deeply, and the decision to make yourself a better person despite it, through practice and introspection.
It's a song about coming to terms with religious violence and how you find a way to seperate yourself from those committing it to maintain your faith in its truest form

@sachsoup this song isn't written based on a fanfic, the band has made a million references to the Bible and Faith and struggles with religion in their music up to this point. The Fanfic you're referring to was written based on this song it seems like, but saying that this song is based on a fanfiction is SERIOUSLY undervaluing the message.
The song is about someone's struggles with faith after discovering those that use faith for their own gain, trying to overcome their shock and anger at the other members of the church because they believe they are truly good despite witnessing horrific acts and inherently evil deeds being carried out by them. "My birds of a kind more and more are looking like, centurions than any little messiah" is a perfect line to illustrate that. It's actually kind of fucked up to reduce it to "OmG FaNfIcTiOn ReAdErs mAdE a SoNg AbOuT iT!!!!1!1" because it really isn't about that at all.

I'm actually really glad that people are coming here from DSMP just because The Oh Hellos are getting more recognition!! I'm glad more people have found their music, through whatever means. I’m here as y’all were, curious about the song after reading that fic, but now I do have to say I listened to almost all of the oh hellos songs for an entire day because I remembered my parents used to listen to them, and it was familiar to me and I love the music now :)
